TV Show Art / Thumbnails Missing On IOS 8

Gear: iPad Mini, 1st Gen, iPad Air 3rd Gen, iPhone 5S all upgraded to IOS 8.

ITunes 11.4 on iMac.

I have ripped TV shows with metadata and art that show fine in iTunes and worked fine on IOS 7 and iTunes 11.3 and before.

Now after syncing I have TV shows with just a grey square where the art would show on ALL my iDevices. I've done the following to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Removed the TV Shows from iTunes. Rebooted the iMac and re-imported the TV shows back to iTunes. Art and metadata show fine in iTunes, but upon sync to any of my iDevices the shows copy over fine but without the art. Each of my iDevices has its own iTunes library.

2. I've rebooted my iDevices and I've erased all content from my iPhone and did a fresh setup with a fresh iTunes library, yet the art/thumbnails don't copy over to the device.

3. I ripped a brand new TV Show that had never been in my library and that too, did not copy over the show art, but it does show in iTunes.

I'm not sure if this is an IOS 8 problem specifically but I'm leaning towards that. It may also be a an iTunes 11.4 issue. Nevertheless the shows do play but it's just annoying that the show art isn't showing on any devices.

If you've got a remedy I haven't done in steps 1-3 above please let me know.

Thanks.

Just an update to my updates...

Deleting and syncing from iTunes didn't seem to do any good at all. Just ended up spending a lot of time re-downloading the movies with the missing cover art.

I ended up manually deleting all of the movies from my iPad Air (through Storage Manager). They kept showing up from iCloud (still gray boxes) so I disconnected from iCloud and verified that they were all "gone". Then I plugged in to iTunes via USB and synced the movies again from it. I have all of my movie cover art back. Seems like it was some kind of a conflict between iCloud and iTunes, and iCloud didn't have the right/usable cover art.(?) I re-connected to iCloud, and everything still seems to be okay now.

I have a couple of DVD rips I will need to load off of my other computer. They actually did have cover art- my issue was with movies from iTunes.

Man your issue is a bit different from all the posts I've read in this thread and several others and I've probably read at least 100. Whew.

I have a few movies from iTunes and the cover art is not a problem. Shows up on all my devices. So your ripped shows have art, lol.

None of my ripped shows have art unless I modify the art to be 600x600, drop into iTunes and sync my devices. I then have show art but not episode art. So your issue was with iCloud and your content for some reason as you point out. Glad you got it fixed up.

But most of the posts I've been reading are related to ripped content, some album art, movie art or as in my case tv show art. A few fixes I've read was to adjust each cover art to 600x600 or some other landscape size which I can't recall. I don't want to do this, just for sake of hassle and time.

I've read were a few users just tagged all their tv shows as home videos and they have their art back. I may just do this in the interim until a better solution is found. Which will be IOS 8.x fixing the issue, or iFlicks is updated to correct the issue and is the software I use for conversion, metadata and art.

Until then I'll just accept the grey box.

I have all of my ripped movies in the Home Video section as to not confuse them with my purchased iTunes movies (obviously in the Movies section). Out of curiosity I one of my ripped "home movies" to have the "movie" file type and re-synced it to my phone and now the artwork shows up fine.

I'd try it with my ripped TV shows, but then they'd become separate files as opposed to bundled together correctly if I change the file type.

I can confirm that iTunes for Windows doesn't resolve the problem either.

I have completely reset an iOS device (iPhone 5S) and this problem is still apparent with the TV shows only. I have tried using different sizes and shapes and although I have had no success I don't fancy continuing this when it appears and works fine from m Apple TV using Shared Library. It is clearly a bug.I also use the pictures of the episodes for my kids (they know which Thomas the Tank Engine film they want to watch from the picture).

One thing I have noticed in the Sync process though between iTunes and the iOS devices. When transferring the movies (i know this is not tv shows, but bear with me), once the film was transferred the artwork for the film would then appear. Since iOS 8.0 (and now 8.1) this no longer happens. All the movies are transferred first then an additional step can be seen in the iTunes notification bar across the top saying it is transferring artwork. After this step all the cover art for the movies suddenly appears.

I suspect that while this problem manifests itself on iOS devices i think it is clear it is the Sync process in iTunes that is causing the problem.

As Bill Aviles said on September 27, 2014 don’t kill the messenger. I have a relative who works for Apple in Cupertino. He told me that rectangle artwork for TV shows is no longer supported in IOS 8. It needs to be square. I believe it’s got to be 600 x 600. If you have an Apple TV you’ll notice rectangles artwork gets automatically Cropped. In a future update Apple TV will no longer support rectangle artwork for TV shows. You can use rectangle artwork for movies. The screen shot is from my iPad which now has square art work from Ben Dodson website. I’ve had several friends who have had the same issue and have used Ben’s artwork and no longer see the gray box with the TV show name inside. You’ll notice there’s one show “The Millers” that has rectangle artwork. It shows up as the typical gray box everybody seeing. Yes it’s a pain in the *** to replace all that artwork. It sure would be nice if you could go into iTunes and right-click and get artwork. I hope this helps.

There are 2 issues with TV artwork on IOS 8 (including 8.1):

1. The artwork on the series - this is sorted if one uses 600 x 600 artwork like that that Ben D links us to (which looks great BTW!);

2. The artwork against each episode - that is NOT sorted with any artwork I can find; in previous IOS releases (i.e. 7 and below), it appears that those images were produced by the IOS (or iTunes?) scanning the first few frames and picking one.

Can anyone anywhere confirm that they can see artwork in IOS 8 against each individual episode?
