Syncing Apps to iPhone 6 / 6 Plus Stuck

I just got an iPhone 6 Plus this morning on launch day. I backed up my iPhone 5S and then hooked my 6 Plus in and restored from backup. After it was done restoring from backup and starting syncing all my apps, pictures, etc., to my 6 Plus, it gets stuck on the part where its syncing apps. It hangs after the first app or 2 leaving you hopelessly stuck at "Copying 1/102 Apps". I have tried simply canceling the sync by clicking the X under devices in iTunes. Unfortunately, this will pop up a window under iTunes that says something to the effect of "Completing Sync" and there it hangs endlessly, forcing you to force quit out of iTunes and try again. But even after trying again, it will still get stuck after 2 or 3 apps.

Is anyone else having this issue? Found a fix to this? Please let me know.

This is incredibly frustrating (and I hope Apple says something official soon – they were aware of the issue on the first day of sales), BUT you shouldn’t be losing data. I’ve helped a number of people with this issue get restored and none of them have lost data. Keep in mind that many apps require you to log back in before you can see your data again.

I’d give the wifi option a shot. That seems to have worked most often for us. And once you finally get the apps over once, everything updates normally by USB after. If you really are missing data, which apps are affected?

I'm having the same issue as described here...but as one other perosn mentioned, a little different. I'm restoring an iPhone 5.

I am restoring an iPhone 5 on iOS 8.0.2 on Mavericks 10.9.5, using iTunes 10.4. It hangs on different apps durign the copying apps stage of the restore.

edit: it appears I'm having slightly better luck this third restore now that as soon as I restart the phone, I turn off the wifi.

Fingers crossed, that it works better this time.

It appears that the app syncing during restore gets hung up...but I do notice that my device is also buggin me for various things about iCloud verification, two step etc. (which I got around to at different times durign different restores). Who knows what is causing the issue, but it appears to me it's software related, and that I can only list the things that I did differently.

I agree with spicy_toof on page 3.

I had upgraded an iPhone 5S to iOS 8., then updated apps on iTunes on my Mac.

Connected the iPhone to the Mac via USB cable, it began syncing, then hung "Syncing Apps to ... copying 1 of 73:..."

I did the following:-

1. Physically disconnected the USB cable.

2. Force quit iTunes. Restarted the Mac.

3. Put iPhone into airplane mode. (I don't trust WiFI sync anyway)

4. Connected the iPhone to Mac via USB

5. iTunes: File->Devices->Transfer purchases from iPhone

6. iTunes: File->Devices->Sync iPhone

7. In iTunes: if iTunes seems to have hung copying an app, go to the iPhone and check the icon from the app. Each time I saw the app was actually progressing.

Finally all 73 apps transferred and the sync completed. After that I did a backup of the phone for good measure.

I've been hit with the same issue that people are seeing here. I tried resetting the phone 4 or 5 times (I lost count 😐) each time trying something different. (Set up a "new phone" then restore? Restore immediately? Wipe all backups and create a fresh one, then restore from that? Make sure wifi is off?)

The thing that *finally* worked for me -- after one hang, I remembered someone in this thread (and an Apple chat support person) had mentioned doing File -> Devices -> "Transfer Purchases from [my phone]".

That fixed it! I'm watching iTunes restore my 126 apps without pauses now.

To recap:

1) Plugged in phone immediately with factory-fresh settings.

2) Restore from backup (in iTunes)

3) iTunes does the initial restore phase, then the phone reboots.

4) This is usually the part where syncing apps hangs. I STOPPED the phone from syncing and did the "Transfer Purchases ...". Then the phone started syncing apps just fine. (Weird, because this is my iPhone6! Any purchases on there *came from the backup*.)

I hope apple fixes this bug ASAP! It's a really bad impression with a new phone!

Hi there,

I had the same problem with my iPhone 6.

This is the process that worked for me:

1. disabled "Find ma iPhone"

2. disabled iCloud Backup

3. made a backup of my iPhone 5 via iTunes

4. restored my iPhone 6 via the "Restore iPhone" button in iTunes (the whole 2 gig of iOS was downloaded from the Apple servers)

5. choose "restore from Backup" in iTunes

6. after the restore was finished and the sync has started, I've finished the setup steps on the iPhone (with Wi-Fi enabled on the Phone and unchecked "Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi" in iTunes)

It seems, that updating the iPhone from iOS 8.0 to iOS 8.0.2 over the air is different from restoring it completely via iTunes.

Regards,

Frank

Until the issue is resolved, I would suggest you set 'Automatically Back Up' to 'This computer' and physicallly plug in your iPhone 6. Make sure 'Automatically Back Up' to 'iCloud' is turned off. I was plugged into my iMac with backup to 'iCloud' turned on and it kept hanging. I'd also suggest you also tick 'Sync only checked songs and videos'. I suspect on large capcity iPhones, it tries to copy your music library to your iPhone...and for some that will take a long time - cause?

After experiencing all of the above issues (and some!!!) I have resolved my problems by copying all of my itunes folder (200+GB less the videos, another 150GB - due to capacity issues) to another drive on my system, and not a server or NAS drive as it used to be. Started Itunes with the shift key held down and pointed Itunes at the new library location. This has resolved the Iphone 6 installation and sync issues, something that was OK before the Iphone 6, IOS 8, Itunes 11.4 combination.

Now I just need someone to tell me how I get all my media back where it was working perfectly across all my devices and network and refund the 2 days worth of lost income due to the investment in my time working out a resolution to Apples poor project management, testing and documentation,

was having same issues -

stopped using usb cable completely and switched to wifi sync - worked like a charm. i AM ON osx 10.9.5 and original backup was via cable, the restore worked via wifi but not with usb cable connected (hung on apps)

hopefully this helps! incredibly annoying for sure. We get macs and apple products in hopes that things will "just work"
