Can't connect to my WiFI with new iPhone 6 - keeps saying the WiFi password is wrong.

My new iPhone 6 simply will not connect to my WiFi router - it's a Netgear WNDR4500 with the latest firmware. It's always worked great with Apple devices. FWIW I don't think it supports 802.11ac like the new iPhone 6 does (I've been using 802.11n for the past year or two) but that shouldn't be a problem, it also supports a/b/n etc. The iPhone 6 sees the network(s) it just won't connect b/c it says the password is wrong. I've typed it dozens of times it is NOT wrong.

First of all no, the caps lock is not on. I'm not that dumb. My iPad Mini connects to my wifi router just fine, as did the iPhone 5S I just traded in for the iPhone 6 (with the correct wifi network password). I haven't changed any wifi router settings from the time I left home to wait in line 4 hours to get this new iPhone 6... and now I get home and it won't connect to my WiFi. It sees the SSID (i have two, 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz), but it always says the wireless password is wrong. Cannot connect, wrong password. The password is 100% correct. It's the same PW my iPad is using to connect, and that works just fine.

I'm so disappointed. I waited in line - in the rain - so long for this, and now it won't connect to my WiFi! I did try resetting all network settings.... no benefit. Interesting I did manage to get it to connect to my slow, crappy xfinity wifi, which is just horrible. So, the thing DOES connect to Wifi, it's not totally broken.

Anyone else have this problem? FWIW my old iPhone 5S and my current iPad Mini Retina were both updated to iOS 8, so I don't see how that could be the problem, both connected to my wifi under iOS 7 and iOS 8 just fine, no problems.

Thanks for any help. I'm hoping I don't have to return this iPhone 6.

Possible Quick Solution: Update to iOS v8.02 using a G-band WiFi router or over the cellular network.

I had the same issue with non Apple brand routers, ASUS (AC) and Netgear (N) dual band routers. I was shipped the iPhone 6+ from AT&T (pre-order) which was not activated out of the box therefore, I needed to connect to my WiFi to setup but also got the error wrong password for both routers. Fortunately I tried the slower G-band/protocol offered by my routers and the password worked. I was then able to log into my Apple account and setup. I was then notified of an update to iOS version 8.02.

After updating to iOS v8.02I was able to connect to the higher speed band/protocol N routers and successfully connected to the Netgear router. Clearly, there was an issue with the firmware the initial iOS 8.

I hope this helps.... Good Luck.

Try resetting your wifi router. Completely unplug it, power off on it.

Power off all devices with wifi on them in your house.

Turn on wifi.

Turn on the device that hasn't been connecting to wifi first, then proceed through the others.

Some wifi routers only have so many IP addresses and when you trade in an old device, it keeps holding an IP address for the old device.

Yeah, did all that. Here's the thing - my sister and I are in the same room at her house. Her router is a few rooms away. She's holding an iPad, I've got my iPhone 6. She hasn't upgraded to iOS 8 yet.

She can see the network I'm having problems with and connects without any problems whatsoever. When I pull up my possible wifi connections, I don't even see it. It simply isn't there until I'm ten feet from the router. Even then the connection wavered, and yes, it won't accept my password. Everyone else in my sister's house doesn't have any problems seeing the router except me.

That's not a router issue. That is either a hardware or software issue.

I shouldn't have had to do it, but buying a new router solved the problem for me. I wanted one with 802.11ac anyway, so I figured I'd try a new router and if it didn't work I'd return it. But it worked on the first try. Password accepted. When I brought my new iphone 6 back to the apple store and it worked fine on their wifi and accepted the password on their system, They told me it must be my router. I don't buy that - the other responses in this thread prove it and all my other devices, including an ipad mini retina, were on my old wifi router just fine. But still, new router = problem solved.

Couple of things:

1. Can you check how many IP addresses your router is programmed to give out? (I almost went nuts trying to get my smart TV on my home network until I increased the number of available IP addresses - my own security precaution backfiring on me)

2. Turn your security settings temporarily to none and see if the router connects

3. If it does then try with a new password and then change back to the old one (so you don't have to change it on your other devices)

This has worked for some people and as such thought to suggest it

Good luck!

I have this problem too. Today my iphone 6 can't connect to the wifi in my office. It just told me "unable to connect to...". I've tried every way to fix it but it still doesn't work. I've experienced some other problems too. Sometimes when I type a new message, the phone just doesn't work properly, the letter doesn't appear. Other times when I open my facebook, the screen suddenly goes black. Got no idea what to do.

Like many here, I had the same problem with the password for the (AT&T) router not working. Here's what worked for me, as nothing else I found online did.

I went into the router via 192.168.1.254 and in the wireless part I noted that WPS was turned OFF. I turned it ON and it worked! Just for kicks I turned it OFF again, and darned if it the Iphone 6 didn't come up to enter the password again. I was on another thread 8 pages long and tried everything there, with no luck. this worked for me.

Thanks,

I do have the same issue with 3 different Routers but only with my iPhone6 (8.3) - it will ask for the password even if I am 100% sure I entered it correctly, or even if I already was connected to the same AP and just lost the signal - in that case I just press cancel, do not enter the passowrd again and use the workaround below.

iPhone4 works, iPad2 works, Macbook works, Nexus5 works, etc.

The iPhone6 works with many other routers without problems.

I noticed that I have to put the iPhone6 as close as possible to the problematic routers - then it will connect - and stay connected even if I walk away - no issues. But as soon as I loose the signal and need to reconnect to the wifi AP, I have to hold the iPhone6 close to the AP again. Looks like packetloss during WPA2 key exchange.

Thread necro for those who are still suffering with this, it's likely caused by the 20/40MHz setting on your router, which is 802.11N.

With 802.11N comes a feature called Guard/Preamble interval. If this is set to "long", no iPhone will be able to connect to the WiFi signal. Changing this setting to "short" or "both" fixes this immediately.

Hope this helps someone.
