IOS 8 landscape bug

I'm on an iPhone 6 but I noticed this on my iPhone5s which I upgraded to iOS 8. Most applications will not switch to landscape mode especially safari and messages. Toggling the orientation lock doesn't fix the issue either and I believe this is a bug.

Thanks

I am experiencing this issue with an iPhone 6, iOS 8.0 and 8.0.2.

I could fix the issue with a workaround: it usually works to just lock the screen and wait a couple of seconds, then unlock the screen.

The screen should now rotate as usual.

Looking at at the workaround, I am sure this is a software bug in iOS, thus you won't be able to fix this by restoring your device.

Also, a lot of the tips here seem like an overkill. If you want to reboot, just switch your device off and on again. Pressing home & power buttons together for 5 secs is a pretty violent reset and should only be applied if your device becomes otherwise unresponsible.

hope that helps!

Absolute nonsense. The reset of holding the power and home buttons is neither overkill nor violent - it is similar to rebooting a PC and is actually quite good for the phone. It clears the RAM and will not harm a thing. It's recommended by Apple in many instances and can clear up many glitches and non-working apps. Please don't disseminate incorrect information.

Now, as to the non-rotation problems - I can say it is definitely NOT a bug, as I have not had this problem in any instance of iOS software nor Apple hardware.

Of course, the whole world rotates around you. Just because you do not face this issue, it means others are either hallucinating, are bad users who don't know how to use their devices or are just lying outright? Right?

In software not all bugs are consistently repeatable. That is the reason you got to hire better quality QA resources who would test the systems from multiple angles.

@AmishCake: I was just trying to provide some help in form of a workaround, so I'd appreciate if we could keep it friendly and helpful to help us finding a workaround until the bug is fixed by Apple.

However, I feel I need to address some facts, as you mention I stated "absolute nonsense":

- Reboot: Rebooting the phone means switching it off and on again. This way, current preferences get saved and the OS is shutting down properly.

- Force Reset: Pressing Home+Power buttons is like pulling the power cord of a PC, you're resetting the system, thus there might be issues if you interrupt the system while it does something important.

This is not just an opinion, but a fact:

"You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't restart it."

see Apple Tech Docs: Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

Moreover, as I found out by trying (thanks to someone here mentioning it could be "Reachability"-related), it should be sufficient to just lock the screen and unlock it again to make that bug disappear. Telling people to hard-reset their devices is in fact an unnecessary overkill and might result in dataloss if you're extremely unlucky.

I'd appreciate if someone could confirm or deny this workaround.

It worked for me (twice) on an iPhone 6 running iOS 8.0.2.

I can confirm that the issue does not always resolve by simply locking and unlocking the device. I've tried hard to replicate and resolve this issue but have given up Just when I thought that I had figured out what causes the issue and what could possibly resolve it, I was proved wrong quickly:(

I'm just hoping that Apple engineers are smarter than me and can find and resolve this bug quickly.

Hi zeichensprecher,

Just so you know, regardless of what the Apple Support page says, we regularly recommend the Power Button/Home Key reset and I have never heard of anyone having any issues as a result of the reset itself. Any time I have a strange problem with my device I have (over many years and many devices) performed this type of reset to clear things up. It is not like pulling the power cord out of the wall. It is a reboot of the system as opposed to the restart which occurs as a result of Power button method. The analogy to a computer would be a Shut Down vs. a Restart. Neither one is going to harm the computer, and neither one will harm the iOS device.

Cheers,

GB

I Too am having the same issue with landscape. I tried restart (no hard reset) and it worked for a little, but now it's doing it again as I type. I sure wish I could type using the larger keyboard in landscape! Another issue I am having with iOS 8 is my contact list. I used to be able to move my thumb through the alphabet quickly on the right hand side. Now it won't let me.

i have iPhone 6 running iOS 8.0.2.

Seriously? Are you simply trolling or do you really just not get it? If you are not experiencing this bug why don't you just get a life and move on and leave this thread and let the rest of us(who are "imagining" this bug) whine about this issue here?

Just because your particular installation does not "manifest" the bug does not mean that code base does not have this bug. Anyway, I really give up trying to explain how software bugs works. When I get a chance, I'll try to upload a short video that I took of my iphone 5s shortly after upgrading to iOS8 that demonstrates this behavior.

@Kya: btw, the official way to report bugs is by using http://bugreport.apple.com/. These bug reports are going straight to the Apple engineers/developers and the more submissions there are about one issue, the higher its rank gets.

It's a bit nerdy though and mainly intended for developers, so you should have knowledge of how to describe an issue in a logical and very clear manner (incl. steps to reproduce etc...).

The average (non-technical-minded) end user should probably use https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html.
