IOS 8 landscape bug

I'm on an iPhone 6 but I noticed this on my iPhone5s which I upgraded to iOS 8. Most applications will not switch to landscape mode especially safari and messages. Toggling the orientation lock doesn't fix the issue either and I believe this is a bug.

Thanks

My wife and I both have the 'non-glitch' according to AmishCake. My wife first started complaining about it last week, which in turn irritated me since I figured she did something to cause it. Within 24 hours it started happening to me. It's weird because it's random. Locks up, then unlocks whenever it decides it's time.

Oh wait... never mind... I imagined it. So did she.

Thanks AmishCokeHead.

What nerve you have saying because you don't have the problem, Apple doesn't need to work on a glitch (because it essentially doesn't exist)?

This is what you said, and I quote "Now, as to the non-rotation problems - I can say it is definitely NOT a bug, as I have not had this problem in any instance of iOS software nor Apple hardware."

So, it looks like you're saying that there is no glitch, since you did not encounter it. Or perhaps we're imagining this. care to clarify you remark?

I've been an advanced iOS user and trainer for years and I don't buy glitch vs. bug. The odds of us all having the hardware failure "glitch" manifest immediately after the iOS 8 upgrade takes quite a leap of faith. Way more likely that something in the iOS stew is not agreeing with our hardware. There is also the possibility they didn't fully test the iOS with other popular approved apps. The difficulty with bringing it the the Genius Bar is that the behavior is random. May take a while to get the issue to manifest again. My money is on the code used to calibrate and receive info from the gyro.

@AmishCake: maybe you should look up the definitions of glitch and bug. A glitch typically happens in a graphical way. Just google "glitch" for some images and you'll see what a glitch is.

Just btw: I'm a developer and in my opinion it's definitely a bug in the system: It happens on both iPhone 5 and iPhone 6, and it did not happen with iOS 7, so a hardware issue can be ruled out. It might just be that there's an issue with something we all installed, for example a keyboard extension (though it did happen to my device before I had installed one).

I also agree that "Reading The Manual (TM)" is usually a good thing, though I honestly doubt it'll help here to read the two-sided leaf that comes with your iPhone.

While you are right that in 99% of all forum posts, there's most likely no bug, I wouldn't go out on a limb on this if I were you ;-)

I would recommend to wait for the next update before going to the Apple Store.

No off you go kids, continue to quarrel with each other 😉

Ok, Here is an update. I had mentioned earlier of how my iphone 5s started displaying this bug... ummm.. "glitch" (lmfao) a few days back. I recently purchased the iphone 6. And today I started facing the same issue with iphone 6. The problem first manifested in safari and then a facetime call was "upside down". Killing safari and restarting did not help. Just restarted the phone. Problem resolved. fu#%^ pain in the @55. Hope @pple resolves this glitch in iOS 8 really soon.

By the way, many of you may have noticed I have started using the word "glitch" instead of "bug" since it may be easier for apple to fix this "glitch" since the "bug" does not exist in the code 👿

''Suit yourself, wait for an update that doesn't exist'... what exactly is that suppose to mean? To me you're basically saying there is no problem just because you aren't having the problem. Obviously there is a problem and we aren't imaging it. The other part of this which I think some of you are overlooking... 'glitch' and 'big' to the Average Joe is synonomous. By saying 'it's definitely NOT a bug seems to infer there is no problem, and while maybe it's a glitch (which to us is the exact same) I think that you 'Amishcake' are getting off on the mix up for whatever nerd reason. It's OBVIOUSLY a problem with the programming and NOT some sort of failure in EVERYONE'S hardware. So I don't know if that makes it a BUG or a GLITCH, but either way it's one of them and it's irritating to say the least. Which brings me to the last question... are you a glitch or a bug?

Again - putting words down that I have NOT said! I have repeatedly asked, "What troubleshooting steps have you taken?" to several posters only to hear nothing but silence. I guess I will have to write them out here.

The standard steps are outlined in the manual. These are all what Apple recommends and are also what the Geniuses will do if you go to the Genius Bar.

1. You start by powering the phone off, then turn it back on.

2. If the problem continues, you close out all the running apps, then perform a reset by holding down the home & power buttons until the screen goes black and you see the Apple logo.

3. If the problem continues, you back up and restore your software. Use iTunes for the best quality and most stable experience. Be sure it's the latest updated version.

4. If you're STILL having the problem, that could mean that there is some corruption in your backup file, or possibly one of your apps is causing the problem. In that case, you restore your device as NEW - you don't load your backup file. You use it that way for a few days to test it out. If the problem is solved, that proves it's something in your backup file or one of your apps. If it is STILL happening, it's a hardware problem and you should take your phone in to the Genius Bar (make an appointment first) to have it evaluated.

Good Morning AmishCake & all.

I'm doing my best to behave like an adult. I have taken the following steps with my 5S running 8.0.2

- power off/on

- closed out all apps

- reset

- backup restore

I still have the rotation issue. Although, I am highly skeptical this will work, I plan to wipe my phone "erase all content and settings" and load apps under a fresh profile name. Total pain in the tail but that meet the basic trouble shooting criteria.

To your point 4 above - If the issue still exists there remains the possibility that the problem is hardware OR within iOS 8.

Hello all. I have read through all the posts here and can say I am having very similar issues. I have an iPhone 6 running 8.0.2. I have had the landscape problem since day 1. Mine shows up mostly when in messages. I type in landscape 99% of the time so when I start a new message or reply, I immediately rotate the phone to landscape. About 80% of the time 1 of 2 things will happen. 1. Screen will go black. I touch it and it comes back on, but will give the the tone as if I've recorded a voice message and a voice message actually appears in the script as if I've made one or 2. It will landscape. Then as I start typing the keyboard will freeze up. In either case, I can turn the phone back to portrait mode and continue typing/sending/finishing the message.

I have contacted apple support twice on this issue. The first tech told me to do a restore from back up and if that didn't work, do a reinstall/restore completely which I finally did and it did not fix the issue. I chatted (online) with the second tech yesterday and told him what I had done. He told me to do a "reset all setting" and it should fix this issue. I did that last night and it did not fix this issue.

If it is a "bug" in iOS, I can be patient until an update fixes it, but want Apple to at least tell me "it's a bug/glitch (or whatever) we're aware of it and it will be fixed". If it's a hardware issue, then tell me how to fix that. I am not even close to a tech but it is in my mind that is has something to do with the gyro not playing well with some component of the phone software. Else how could iOS7 not have this issue? Many of you, have a 5S and have the issue since upgrading to iOS8. I know someone with a 4S that upgraded and has the issue.

So in the end, I firmly believe Apple will correct the problem. I just hope it's soon.
