iPhone 6 Motion Calibration Always Using Location Services

hi

just received my iphone6 and is updated to ios8.

IVe noticed that the location services was constantly on so went through each item which was enabled for location sharing and disabled one by one. I discovered that under Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Motion calibration was purple. As soon as I disabled it location sharing icon switched off. As soon as i enabled it it came back on again and the purple icon showed up next to motion calibration meaning it was in use.

So my question....what is motion calibration and why is it constantly using location services??

thanks

My SE has been doing this for the last day. Researching it led me here. What does he mean stop worrying about it? LoL. The arrow is purple meaning it's actively being used.

WRONG. It is explained very clearly what a purple arrow means, and it does not mean it is actively being used. Read what it says at the bottom of the Location Services setting:

"Recently Used" is NOT the same as "Actively being used."

Yes...that drains the battery.

Also wrong. There are anywhere from a dozen to hundreds of apps and functions on your phone (depending on how many apps you have installed) that consume battery. You are focusing on the least likely cause of your battery problem.

The Location Services arrow on my phone's status bar is always displayed, and going to location services I see a total of 24 arrows displayed, and 10 of them are purple (one is a geofence, which DOES continuously actively use Location Services). If Location Services was a major battery drain my battery life would be 15 minutes. Instead, I only really need to charge every 2 - 3 days; if I charge overnight by the end of the day my remaining battery is typically 70%. And I'm a heavy user, with over 250 apps installed.

By paying attention only to one arrow in Location Services you are essentially denying yourself the opportunity to fix your battery issue.

No, you don't understand. The iPhone is a complicated device. You are not capable of understanding the reasons it works the way it does (I'm not either). Unless your phone has exactly same apps and exactly the same usage pattern as your wife you cannot compare the way the 2 phones work. It is fruitless to focus on one small setting of the thousands of possible settings and combination of settings in the phone as if it mattered. All that matters is that the phone works. FWIW my Location Services arrow is on all the time. It has been on continuously on 3 different phones through 4 major versions of iOS over the past several years. The phone works just fine, my battery life is good.

Guys; an update:

So I visited a Genius Bar today to have my iPhone replaced because of a wifi Bluetooth issue.

I Have restored from my backup I took before I left.

Now, on the new iPhone, I go and activate motion calibration and it stays on for 10 seconds and then off.

On my replacement iPhone; motion calibration no longer stays on all the time.

Same OS.

Same data.

WHat ive not done yet is finished syncing all the apps back on.

IF when that is done the motion calibration stays on then it MUST be an app doing this.

After all apps are back on. Motion calibration is still not on all the time.

If I turn it off and back on it stays on only for 15s before going off.

So op the difference here is that my iPhone is a new one.

So op this was fixed by simply backing up and restoring, or this was fixed by resetting all settings. Or this was fixed by a new phone.

Hi, I'm not sure I understand the question. I'm not even sure the OP is here anymore to give out points.

There are no differences between settings of my old iPhone and my new one apart from it is new hardware. The network settings have been reset so I can install my work VPN again.

I've tried turning all location settings to on; no difference; motion calibration now stays off.

I've made sure to open the health app to see if that triggers it. Nothing changes. So now it looks like I no longer have this issue.

The one thing I did do differently; I'm not sure if it makes a difference; I set this iphone up as a new iPhone when I got it, to drive home with. Then at home I plugged it in to iTunes and restored a backup of an iOS 8.1.3 iPhone 6, not an iOS 8.0.2 iPhone 4S

I don't think it's because you have a new iPhone. I have a new one 14 days ago and MC is always on, I wrote about it several posts before, look for it. What I have seen is that when you restore, MC just work for 10-15 seconds then it goes away, minutes later it comes again, and it is working like this for 24-30 hours and when you fully charge your iPhone from the wall (not usb to pc), MC comes on again to be there forever.

I have seen it because I have restored my iPhone 4-5 times, each restoration my iPhone is set like new iPhone and sync all my apps one by one, I never have used backup when I restore, so I'm very sure it doensn't care if you restore or not or if you use or not a bakcup to MC be always on.

There is a last chance to solve the issue: if your new iPhone is a really new iPhone (everybody knows that when Apple changes your iPhone they don't give you a full brand new but a refurbished one) it is possible that the full brand new has another component different to the previous iPhones. How can you see it? In the back of your iPhone, where are all the logos of regulations (FCC, !, CE), if you see a big "0682" it means your iPhone was made 1-2 months ago; if you see "0682" just before CE in a tiny font, it was made several months ago. So, if it is with the big "0682" may be it has another hardware and it's working correctly.

Please let me know what kind of "0682" do you have.

Hello sir. So a few points, and sorry for no line breaks because for some reason typing on an iPhone in this box is terrible! Apple sort it out lol. So first point; I've fully charged this phone now and restarted and still the MC isn't staying always on. Second point is that the guy at Apple said they don't do refurb as replacement; maybe this is a consumer law in the UK thing? Third point, mine does have the model number starting with N, so is a replacement unit (I know that could potentially be refurb also). 4th point; I bought my iPhone 6 for my fiancée on October 2nd; that has big numbers on it next to CE mark. My old iPhone also had big numbers and my replacement iPhone again has big numbers there. I'm not sure that means much? Since here was made in September and has big numbers after CE

My fiancée iphone 6 with big numbers has MC on all the time but was definitely made September; but I did do a blind test on her with it on and off and noticed no difference in battery life (I hid the notification bar icon for it so she didn't know)

Hello iZian

I understood everything you said, thank you so much for the help. My iPhone also was replaced for an issue with the front camera (was not alligned) and mine also starts with N in modl number; mine doesn't have big numbers, not with the new one, not with this one (refurbished,I think). I think, therefore, taht ypu might found the solution, I have done a lot of things to set properly working MC and noe has worked.

Please, if you can, tell me the steps you followed after you received your iPhone (the new one) so I can reply it into mine to see if it works, could you?

Thank you.

Hi, so just to reiterate my fiancée iPhone has big numbers and does have the problem. So here is what happened.

I got new iPhone. I set up as a new phone on the phone itself. I skipped all setup that wasn't necessary. Skipped iCloud. Skipped the lot. I then enabled iCloud to sync contacts. I then got home and plugged the phone into iTunes pc. I was prompted to restore from backup or set up as new phone on screen. I selected my old backup (encrypted) and entered password. It then restored the phone for 15 minutes. I then let the phone sync with iTunes for 3 hours to transfer apps and music. The restored backup had MC turned off when it was taken so MC was off after the restore (as opposed to on as my fiest phone was restored for an iPhone 4S)
