iPhone 6 Motion Calibration Always Using Location Services

hi

just received my iphone6 and is updated to ios8.

IVe noticed that the location services was constantly on so went through each item which was enabled for location sharing and disabled one by one. I discovered that under Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Motion calibration was purple. As soon as I disabled it location sharing icon switched off. As soon as i enabled it it came back on again and the purple icon showed up next to motion calibration meaning it was in use.

So my question....what is motion calibration and why is it constantly using location services??

thanks

WRONG. It is explained very clearly what a purple arrow means, and it does not mean it is actively being used. Read what it says at the bottom of the Location Services setting:

"Recently Used" is NOT the same as "Actively being used."

Yes...that drains the battery.

Also wrong. There are anywhere from a dozen to hundreds of apps and functions on your phone (depending on how many apps you have installed) that consume battery. You are focusing on the least likely cause of your battery problem.

The Location Services arrow on my phone's status bar is always displayed, and going to location services I see a total of 24 arrows displayed, and 10 of them are purple (one is a geofence, which DOES continuously actively use Location Services). If Location Services was a major battery drain my battery life would be 15 minutes. Instead, I only really need to charge every 2 - 3 days; if I charge overnight by the end of the day my remaining battery is typically 70%. And I'm a heavy user, with over 250 apps installed.

By paying attention only to one arrow in Location Services you are essentially denying yourself the opportunity to fix your battery issue.

I’m testing "Motion & Distance Calibration" usage with Apple Support assist

iOS 8.2 restored in DFU mode as "new iPhone".

No recovery backup.

iCloud enabled without “find my iphone”

"Physical activity detection" disabled (no health tracking).

Widgets disabled (no traffic conditions)

Apps refreshing in background disabled

Under Privacy/Location no one app can use location.

Under privacy/location/system services only "motion & distance calibration" and "frequent positions" are enabled.

No unlock with code or fingerprint.

WiFi always on.

Bluetooth always on.

After 2 battery cycles (from around 90% to around 25%) all works fine. MDC start and stop correctly.

Now i'm trying to:

enable find my iphone

enable widgets

enable unlock with code and fingerprint

Hi everybody! I'm new to this discussion... so thank you for posting solutions/advices/links and useful stuff in general (not also about this issue, but in general). I'm not a developer and really far from being an expert... I'm just a normal user that pays attention to settings...

Anyway, it is some days (around 20) that my iPhone (6, iOS8.2) discharges a little bit quicker than before, so I was checking all the settings to find something energy consuming and I found that MC was always on (maybe since 3 months ago when i bought the iPhone – location arrow has been turned off since 3 days ago).

Then I made all the suggested operations (toggle wifi, toggle MC, reboot phone, restore privacy settings, etc.) but after few minutes the MC starts again.

Today I was chatting with the Apple support, and they told me to restore settings completely (settings>general>restore>restore settings – it deletes wifi networks and passwords)... and it worked for me! Now I still see the arrow sometimes for few seconds (which is correct, in my opinion) but location is not always on.

Apple support told me that the cause should be an app and not a bug (i'm not still convinced about this, but anyway I'm carefully giving location permissions to apps one by one, waiting for the MC reappear). I did it this morning and now after 5 hours it seems ok... but I let you know in a couple of days. I don't want you to restore your settings just because I said it. It may be wrong or at least useless...

Bye Bye and thank you again for the help!!!

anyway... after some hours the arrow appeared again.. then I checked (I did not do it before) background app refresh settings (which is more or less useless for me, as I always close all apps after use): I had Instagram, Facebook, Whatsapp. I removed Facebook and Instagram and the arrow is gone now... MC is still pink (purple maybe) in the location settings (it means that is frequently used), but it does not appear on my screen... I'm more curious than concerned about this behaviour...

Eventually, I do not know what (and where) is the problem, if there is one... I'll keep using the iPhone as it is and I'm super happy (even if I'll continue to follow this discussion to try to improve my settings)!

Bye

Hi guys.

I came here to say that I'm still following this discussion, but I have no longer activated "MC" nor "Wifi location" in Location services.

And I realized that the "Step tracking" in "Health app" doesn't have a huge impact on counting my steps. And, seriously now I don't give a ****. I do not use it for a particular matter. My iPhone 6's battery life is now "normal". Like the first month I got it. There you have a SS of my battery usage.

I learned how to live with this problem, and my battery life worth it. I don't have a step tracking data of my first month, but I remeber it was like 4000-4500 steps average per day. And that is what I have now....so I don't mind to have couple hundred steps more or less, my battery is now just fine.

Bye guys

Closing apps after use is a bad idea. Apple designed them to stay open for a reason; if it was really a good idea Apple would have designed them to close after use.

Closing apps does not necessarily stop their background processes. And even if you close an app it opens again if it gets a notification. For more information on closing apps see: http://www.howtogeek.com/204552/no-closing-background-apps-on-your-iphone-or-ipa d-wont-make-it-faster/

Well this worked for me, you can try too,

I had the same continuous location service arrow icon for days, draining the battery, so I opened the compass app, it asked me to calibrate (tilt to roll the ball across the circle) once it was calibrated immediately the location service icon disappeared, It hasn't come again for a week now, I didn't turn anything off just carried out the calibration.

Hi, thanks for the help!

I tried it also some weeks ago without good results (but I'm happy you solved!!)... Anyway on April 2nd I went to the Apple Store at Newcastle (UK) and they told me to reset all settings and to restore the backup (the man speaking with me had an iPhone 6 and he did it with his own because of this "problem"). I did it and since now (13 days) no more continuous calibration... just sometimes, which seems absolutely normal to me... and with a big improvement on the battery life (like in the first day I had it)!

Bye bye

S.

PS: I also did the update to iOS 8.3 without any issue!

Are... are they tracking us? I turned it right off.

Who is "they"?

  • Your carrier tracks you continuously. They don't need Location Services; the cellular network is enough. And they track all cell phones, not just iPhones
  • Some carriers sell your location information to businesses, so they can target you for advertising and also track where you shop
  • Law Enforcement agencies track all cell phones all the time
  • Law enforcement also tracks your car wherever it goes, through 3rd party companies that scan license plates as you go by
  • Various businesses and government track any automatic toll transponders in your car
  • Government spy agencies have many different ways of tracking you, and none of them use Location Services

Location Services on the phone is there for YOUR convenience, so you can ask "where's the nearest pizza" or "where is the cheapest gas?" You don't have to use it, but it makes your life a bit easier. And those who want to track you don't need it.
