30 pin to VGA adapter won't work since iOS 8

I have the iPad 3rd generation. I use my iPad in my classroom and connect to the projector with a 30 pin to VGA adapter. It worked great until I installed iOS 8. Now I get an error message that the iPad does not recognize the device. Any one else struggling with this? Is there a fix?

I took my i-pad 2 into the Apple store and got them to unpack a new adapter and plug it in. I only bought it once it was clear the error wasn't going to repeat itself! That solved the problem. To be fair, although I once had an original Apple connector, the one I had to replace was a cheap copy!

Anyhting to make sure you have to buy the most expensive accessories!!!

I was finally able to get Apple to replace my cables. In order to do that though I had to file it under an ipad that still had Apple care. It was just another hoop for me, but we do have it on a few devices in our Special Ed department, so I was able to comply. To answer someone else's post from earlier, running the update still has not fixed the issue. Be persistent! It took over a month but I finally got my cables replaced.

I have tested it with iOS8.1.1 and it still does't work with my non Apple AV cable and adapter whereas they did work perfectly with iOS7. I wasn't aware that there might/could be some software tucked away in the Apple adapter which makes it specific to the iPad OS. Could this be the case technically? Some people are saying that it does work with the Apple adapter and some are saying that it doesn't! Is there a technical explanation for this?

I am quite sure that Apple is trying to prevent the use of third party adapters. I've got an original Apple dock to VGA adapter which works fine after resetting my iPad 2 (iOS 8.1.1). The third party adapter works for about 10 seconds when I connect it, then there's the error message that "this device is not supported", and afterwards neither the third party nor the original Apple adapter work before another reset (press home and sleep button at the same time for 5-10 seconds). So there's no technical problem with the third party adapter as it works fine for about 10 seconds - this is clearly a software issue of iOS 8.

This could be fixed easily by Apple if only they wanted to.

Thanks RC, appreciated. I did follow the links you suggest a few weeks ago and sent my feedback comments to Apple, but I've not had any response myself or noticed anywhere that they are listening to people, giving an explanation,or proposing some action. Perhaps if the many other users who have been affected by this OS8 problem and are following this community thread take your advice and also send their feedback and comments to Apple via the links you suggest, we might possibly get a response ??!!

What would be a Hard Reset ?

I do not think that would help, whatever it is. It's been fairly well established that you need a newer cable. Got an Apple store test out new cable to verify the cable will work. Buy new cable.

Here what I think Hard Reset could mean.

Re-boot ipad.

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears, then drag the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears. page 128 iPad user manual.

force power down if the above give you trouble.

Hold down both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button. Ten seconds or more. Hold until the Apple logo appears.

Restore to factory settings by loading the latest version of ios that your machine will support:

Do a full backup of your device. Twice is best -- cloud and computer.

Well, where to begin?! I have spent countless hours perusing the web for a solution and last night I FINALLY figured it out!!!! Here are the steps:

1. Connect the VGA adapter to your iPad

2. On your iPad, go to Settings > General > TV Out

3. Switch from NTSC to PAL

4. Go to browser window containing desired video

5. Expand video

6. If it still will not show, disconnect cable and connect once more.

This worked for me with an aftermarket cable. I have an iPad 2, and use Safari as a browser.

Hope this helps somebody 🙂
