Bring back the camera roll!

I've read plenty explaining where my pictures went. The issue is not having them all in one easy to access location! I have many in albums, but when selecting photos from albums to delete them off the phone if I choose, there is a notification stating something to the effect of, 'photos will be removed from the album, not deleted and will remain in your photostream'. Well, camera roll / photostream are gone. Now I have to go sort through the mess known as "collections" to find older pictures?! Not excited about this!

Apple, listen to your customers. Many of us want the camera roll back! PLEASE give us an update that fixes this SOON!!

Thanks.

Your photos are still on your phone. With iOS 8 there is no My Photo Stream or Camera Roll any more. The MPS has been replaced with the Recent Activity album.

The CR is replaced by the Collections mode. The closest we can get to the Camera Roll is to turn off the Summarize Photos feature in the Settings/Photos & Camera pane and view the photos in the Collections/Moments window. 😟

The photos will be in chronological order when scrolled up from the bottom of the window.

The Recent Activity album is showing the photos added in the last 30 days going back to 8/20 (today being 9/18). In iPhoto on a Mac the My Photo Stream is showing more like 31 days, 8/19 to today, 8/20. It must be how the two devices calculate the last 30 days.

WARNING: If you use iTunes to sync photos between your iPhone or iPad and your Mac do not activate the iCloud Drive. Doing so will kill the capability of using iTunes to sync with your mobile device and disable Documents & Data syncing for your iCloud account on OS X Mavericks and earlier Macs, as well as iOS 7 and earlier devices.

And just so you know - all that message means is that when you delete a photo, it does not really get fully deleted. It gets move to the "Recently Deleted" album, which is sync'd to iCloud. It will be fully deleted from that Album in 30 days, but if you want it gone now, you need to delete it out of the Recently Deleted Album. This will remove it from your device and from iCloud.

We are talking about two different things. I am well aware of what you are describing. Removing photos from an album does not move them to the "Recently Deleted" album. The notification lets you know that the photos will be removed from the album, but remain in the camera roll, which is where the confusion is as the "Camera Roll" is gone now (or different).

As far as my comment 'to Apple', I realize they aren't here. More of a little vent session.

Thanks for your comments.

Thanks for this. I realize most of what you've explained, but did learn something new. Hopefully this will help others. I think the biggest thing is that people don't like change. I will admit this applies to me a bit.
The advice of turning off the "Summarize" feature and viewing photos in collections is good advice. I discovered this after playing around a bit more. It is virtually the same as the old camera roll, just broken into date sections that the photos were taken. I can adjust to this, but would still like to see the "Camera Roll" back.

OK, I see what you are saying now, and after a little experimenting I see where you are coming from with the older pictures. Here's a high-level of what I was able to see for Deletions:

1. If you delete any photo or video that is less than 30 days old from either Photos or Albums, it deletes it from both places and puts it in "Recently Deleted" with the message that it will remove it from the Photo Stream on all your devices (Photo Stream meaning any photos that are less than 30 days old and which are shared with other devices and computers that have the same iCloud account and have Photo Stream turned on).

* This is only for photos or videos in either Photos or Albums. If you delete a photo or video that is less than 30 days old from a Shared album, it appears to only delete it from the Shared album.

2. If you delete a photo or video that is older than 30 days old from an Album, it deletes it from the Album only with the message that it will be removed from the album, but not your Photo Library and does not put it in "Recently Deleted". (so, here is where you issue is - because if you want it gone - then you have to do number 3 below).

3. If you delete a photo or video that is older than 30 days old from Photos, it deletes it from Photos and from any album it is in (except Shared Albums) with the message that this photo will also be deleted from an Album.

4. If you Restore a photo in the "Recently Deleted" and then delete it again, it doesn't appear that you get any message (even if it is less than 30 days old)

5. Items in "Recently Deleted" are actually just items in another album. On your Mac or PC, if you look in Photo Stream, you will still see them in the Photo Stream until you delete them from the "Recently Deleted" album on your iOS device (and that is only if they have not yet been imported to iPhoto automatically or manually, of course).

Now while experimenting I was doing a lot of deletes and restores, so I'm guessing that what I am about to say next is probably due to that, but the messages that I listed above don't always show. Sometimes it would just put the item into "Recently Deleted" with no message. It's all a learning curve at this point. But I can see where you might have issues with the need to go through a lot of photos to find the one (or ones) you want to delete. I did find, however, that it was easier to do this when I located a general timeframe or group of photos that might need deleting, then went to the Moments view (which was large enough to see the photos). If there were a group of them I wanted to delete, the Select function allowed me to tap on the ones I wanted, to scroll up and down to other timeframes/photo sets and select those and so forth. Of course, if you have albums with photos from all over the place time-wise, then it would be more difficult. But, with the Camera Roll, you would have the same issue since it was in chronological order as well....
