Why can't I download or update apps on iPad running iOS 8

Updated my iPad Air to iOS 8. Apps requiring updates and any new app downloads I tried on my iPad Air have been sitting in wait status for hours. I did the following to try to correct the problem but with no success...

- Turned off and restarted the ipad

- reset the iPad without losing previous data

- signed out of iTunes account and signed back in.

My cellular and wifi router are working fine. My iPhone 5 update and iPad mini updates to ios8 worked fine and new apps and any updates are downloading without any problems. I have auto download turned in for apps so when I initiate an app download on my iPad Air, it downloads fine onto my iPad mini even though it is "hung up" on my iPad Air.

Is there anything else I should try before taking the radical step of wiping clean my iPad Air?

Shame on the wall street journal team. I can't believe that they have created so much frustration. This is my final disappointment to cancel my subscription. Apple should also be more candid and straightforward to resolving the issue. My problem was escalated to third level support 8 days ago with a promise that they would call me back. I have not yet heard back from them.

I have tried everything everyone else has suggested. I have tried:

1. Close everything that is open, turn off Wifi, reboot (hold Home and Power button until Apple appears and then disappears, then press Power button to

restart iPad.

  1. 2. Try to update one at a time from the Purchased screen instead of the Update screen of the App Store.
  2. 3. Tried to delete one App and then download it again (it doesn't download).
  3. 4. Tried to install a completely new App - it doesn't install.
  4. 5. Called Applecare who told me that I would have to plug my iPad into my MacBookPro Retina and install the apps that way and if that didn't work then I would have to completely wipe out my iPad and start again (this is the sort of "try it you'll like it" workaround advice that I used to get from Microsoft). I won't do this because others have commented that nothing installs and their iPads are useless.

Note that all of the apps that wouldn't update on my iPad updated just fine earlier today on my iPhone 6 Plus with iOS 8.0.2

Does anyone know how to go back to iOS 7?

I did backup my iPad to my MacBookPro before I installed iOS 8 on my iPad. Has anyone restored an iPad from this sort of backup? Does it work?

I am really disappointed. I was getting used to everything always working on my Apple devices.

Has anyone solved this problem, or should I just wait for iOS 8.0.3 or iOS 8.1?

teyrl123, you do not mention whether you investigated the possibility that you may have the WSJ (Wall Street Journal) app installed, or other subscription based apps in News Stand or not. After removing the WSJ app everything began working for me (iOS 8.0.2), and I believe the problem began the day I installed the NYT (New York Times) Cooking app, which incidentally is NOT in the News Stand but is updated using my NYT subscription, so I suspect some sort of core subscription conflict is causing the problem.

I recommend you give some thought to the possibility of removing apps that may be subscription based (Newspapers, magazines, etc.) and see if this can help you.

You also didn't mention if you turned off auto update in settings. That's what worked for me, that and always signing in to the app store first before going to the update page. Maybe that's not necessary now but I'm still doing that. I don't have any subscriptions but I see most of the people with problems do. Ever since I turned off auto update I haven't had a problem and that was weeks ago. So if you haven't turned it off, try that. I have an iPad air, which a lot of people seem to think is more prone to this problem. But so far so good for me.

HI All,

It appears that there are two versions of the same problem here in regards to not being able to download or update apps from the App Store since the iOS 8 update. There are those who have been affected by the WSJ app (and therefore have hopefully found a solution), and those like myself who have the problem but do not actually and never have downloaded the WSJ app.

Like my fellow peers on this thread I have had download/update problems (over WiFi) with my iPad 3 since the iOS 8 update, and even updating it further with 8.0.2 has done absolutely nothing to rectify the download problem. And like many peers, I have tried everything I can think of to solve the problem but without any permanent success. (I now wish I was quick enough to act in reverting back to iOS 7). These include:

-Signing Out and then In again into my iTunes account.

-Resetting Network as well as All settings.

-Checked to see that I haven't got any other apps downloading content in the background.

-And yes, in all my ongoing frustrations, I have even restored my iPad to new factory settings and tried reloading content back onto to it!!!!

However, I have noticed a couple of things in my situation and these include the following:

-Whenever I soft or hard reset the iPad, downloads and updates through the App store will occur again but will do so for so long before the problem returns again. I had 10 apps that needed updating but the process stopped 5 or 6 apps into it and I had to reset the iPad again to finish the rest, which is a real pain and inconvenience. Also, these updates or downloads must be done as soon as the iPad reboots and within a small 5-10 minute window or else the problem presents itself again and any attempted downloads 'hang'.

-I have also noticed that the red coloured number notification sign which normally pops up over the App store icon, to let you know an update is available for an app or apps, now ceases to provide this notification. It isn't until you actually go into the App Store app and select 'Updates' from the bottom that you then told you have so many updates available for download.

Like I said, having to reset the iPad each time I need to download or update something is a real pain. I have now been doing this on iTunes through my notebook, but let's face it, it's not anywhere near as convenient as over the WiFi. The fact that I have gone ahead and fully restored the iPad to new factory settings only to be presented with the same problem, convinces me that there is a bug in the new iOS 8 software. I am hoping someone at Apple Support has caught wind of this problem and a solution is being worked on.

In the meantime, should any of you have any more ideas for a solution, please pass them on. It would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I am hoping someone at Apple Support has caught wind of this problem and a solution is being worked on.

When I called Apple about this problem they said that I was the first and only person to report it.

Please everybody - call Apple and let them know there is a problem so that they will fix it!!!

I switched from Android and Microsoft to Apple because I was tired of having to use workarounds. I expect Apple products to work and I am not interested in the "try it, you will like it" workaround approach. I am an IT professional and have dealt with workarounds instead of solutions for years and am not willing to do this anymore with my personal products.

Last year I bought an Amazon Kindle Fire HDX (the small one) because it is smaller than an iPad mini and more comfortable to hold for reading my Kindle books. It is also a lot less expensive. And it works!

I hope that Apple will soon fix this iPad problem. It would be great if a lot of people would call Apple to report the problem so that Apple knows about it.
