Why can't I download or update apps on iPad running iOS 8

Updated my iPad Air to iOS 8. Apps requiring updates and any new app downloads I tried on my iPad Air have been sitting in wait status for hours. I did the following to try to correct the problem but with no success...

- Turned off and restarted the ipad

- reset the iPad without losing previous data

- signed out of iTunes account and signed back in.

My cellular and wifi router are working fine. My iPhone 5 update and iPad mini updates to ios8 worked fine and new apps and any updates are downloading without any problems. I have auto download turned in for apps so when I initiate an app download on my iPad Air, it downloads fine onto my iPad mini even though it is "hung up" on my iPad Air.

Is there anything else I should try before taking the radical step of wiping clean my iPad Air?

Gotta agree it is buggy. For me apps did not download to iPad air after ios8. Then they magically did. Now they magically stopped again (as of 10/6).

Done did most everything described here at one time or another except for deleting the wsj app.

Safari has some issues on loading pages and loading links. Got to reload pages sometime to get links that work.

Thanks a million 🙂, the turning off auto update and restarting my Ipad solved the problem. I can now update the apps and install new ones.

This worked for me too!

I've had this happen 4 times since iOS 8 and the only thing I was able to do to fix it was "Reset all settings" which is inconvenient because I have to go through and reset a lot of preferences and re-scan my fingererprints.

I'm glad I finally found a way to fix this without resetting all settings.

I also logged out of my iTunes account in the app store. I turned off all settings including auto updates in settings/iTunes & App store. I rebooted. Then logged back into the App store and it was all fixed. I don't think all of that is totally necessary but if it's not working for someone, try these additional steps.

The post recommending the deleting of the WSJ app worked for me. I deleted the app, turned off WiFi and then turned the iPad off for about 5 minutes. Brought the iPad back up, tuned on WiFi checked my payment info (saw this too on another post) and saw that some info was missing for some reason so I got that updated. Went to App updates and they started working. I'm concerned this may not last because it was working fine with the WSJ app until 3 days ago so I can't really pinpoint that WSJ is the root cause.

Unbelievable! I have read several posts which said that deleting WSJ app solved the problem. I then noticed that the WSJ app on the iPad shows an old Opinion page while the WSJ app on my iPhone shows today's Opinion page. So - I turned off WiFI and Bluetooth (which I use for my keyboard), detected WSJ app, did hard boot (hold both power and home button until the apple appears). Turned on WIFI but left bluetooth off. All apps updated! Downloaded WSJ app again. Noticed that it still shows the wrong (old) Opinion page. Turned on Bluetooth. Downloaded a new app - successfully!

So it looks like there are definitely problems with the WSJ app on the iPad since it still displays an old version of the Opinion page.

But now everything else works!

Thanks to whoever first figured out that deleting WSJ app would solve the problem!

Do you have the Wall Street Journal App? If so, they WSJ came out with an update today to remedy the problem it's app is causing: preventing other apps from downloading or updating ( on an iPad Air with iOS 8, at least). I haven't been running the WSJ lately on my iPad, so it didnt freeze up my apps. Howeve, my husband has been reading it frequently on his iPad, and had the problem described by many in this thread. It was a catch 22, since he couldn't download the update. He removed the app from his newsstand, then rebooted his iPad. The updated version of the WSJ installed, and other apps and their updates could now download.

So, some of the problems Apple device users may be having aren't necessarily due to iOS 8, but maybe to outside apps that haven't properly been updated to work with the new system.

A post about the WSJ App here: http://appadvice.com/appnn/2014/10/a-nasty-bug-has-been-removed-that-made-it-dif ficult-for-some-ios-8-users-to-download-apps

Per my previous post, I was on an iPhone 6, not an iPad. Sorry I found this thread through a search and didn't notice it was iPad, not iPhone. So my issue may have been different. I don't use the WSJ app.

I previously sent a note to WSJ based on what we learned from each other in this discussion. I just received the following reply...
