Why can't I download or update apps on iPad running iOS 8

Updated my iPad Air to iOS 8. Apps requiring updates and any new app downloads I tried on my iPad Air have been sitting in wait status for hours. I did the following to try to correct the problem but with no success...

- Turned off and restarted the ipad

- reset the iPad without losing previous data

- signed out of iTunes account and signed back in.

My cellular and wifi router are working fine. My iPhone 5 update and iPad mini updates to ios8 worked fine and new apps and any updates are downloading without any problems. I have auto download turned in for apps so when I initiate an app download on my iPad Air, it downloads fine onto my iPad mini even though it is "hung up" on my iPad Air.

Is there anything else I should try before taking the radical step of wiping clean my iPad Air?

I am using an iPad Air 128GB Verizon LTE model, with iOS 8 and I am running into the exact same thing. I've been fumbling around trying all the fixes listed in this forum for days. Quite irritating. I have found that turning the power off for a couple of minutes, doing a hard reset and closing all open apps has finally allowed me to start downloading apps again. And I have found that by trying to check for system updates (meaning I wanted to download the 8.02 update) that it fails and puts it into the exact same frozen state again. Just the app downloading, most everything else works. Except for certain connected apps, they freeze when the app store won't download apps. Specifically, WSJ (works through Newstand) and Zinio both fail to work. I'm not sure I will be able to workaround to get the system update, if it constantly freezes app store downloads whenever I check for updates. I guess I will have to hook it up to a desktop with iTunes and manually download if Apple can't re-initiate the connectivity on their end. In my head, I keep hearing the refrains of 'It just works.' For a late model, highly expensive device, this is a load of crap. The fact that I had to spend days searching for and digging through forum entries to discover this is amazing. I am going to try to reach out to one of the bloggers who wrote an iOS 8 review and reference them to this thread. Good luck to all with issues, if I find a permanent solution, I will post it.

I will chime in on this thread too in the hopes that more posts will alert Apple to the issue. I have a 16 gb iPad Air. I updated to 8.02 a few days ago. Everything seemed to be going fine, but today I notices that my apps were all "stuck" waiting to update. I've tried everything in the threads (reboot, log out of app store, try to delete and re-install app, try to install a new app, etc.). Nothing works. I have an iPhone 5s with 8.02 and it seems to be updating fine (knock on wood).

I just rang and they helped me with this issue. 🙂

Make sure you know your wifi password. The following fix didn't require a restore or for me to lose any other data.

Go to Settings, General, Reset, Reset all settings. Reset, Reset, (It might ask for the devices password).

Once the reset is done, open the apple store and search for the apps that aren't working and download them directly from the app store.

I really hope that it helps everyone. I'd be keen to know if it helps.

I too have been having this same issue. I have a 32gb iPad air and a 64gb iPhone 5s both running 8.02. The air is having the download issue but the phone isn't. I spent considerable time with tier2 support last week before 8.02 was released and could not fix the issue. We ran through every option that has been flagged in this thread. They were hoping that the update would resolve it but alas It did not.

i believe that the issue has something to do with sync or something is gumming up a download cache (if there is one). My issue is not isolated to app updates but also over the air (wifi and cellular) music and TV content downloads, certain newsstand apps (ny post, cooks illustrated) as well as certain apps that sync over the air like Evernote. They basically hang and then crash.

strangely, when I reset the iPad to factory settings, everything works well for about 2 days and then reverts back to its bad habits. Also, I can download apps and content when teathered to my MacBook air. No problem. It's only OTA updates.

I Hope this additional insight about sync possibly being the root of it sparks a brighter developer mind than mine to think differently (no pun intended) about this issue!

Are you using @icloud Apple IDs? Try change it to @me. Looks like weird, but it smells like being an authentication problem up there. I have tried everything withou success, until I changed my Appel ID to @me. It is working :)Heitor N Simão Jr

I too have tried everything on this thread. I'm running 8.0.2 on an iPad Mini Retina LTE Verizon. This problem started last week and I did a clean install from scratch and set up all apps. Auto updates were working fine until today. Now back to the same issues. Just posting to get more Apple looks realizing this is an issue. My iPhone 5S Verizon is running 8.0.2 and has never had these issues.

My experience has been identical to what you described. I have an iPad 2. I've tried everything suggested in this thread and elsewhere. I did a factory reset and was able to download and update apps normally for two days and then the issue returned. I can download and update when tethered to my laptop via iTunes but not via wifi or cell. I hope that others having the same problem post in this thread and/or call Apple support so as to help make them aware of the extent of the issue. If I stumble upon something that might be helpful, I'll post again. Very frustrating.

Along with not updating apps, many apps quit working. They hang on load. Examples are CNBC and NextIssue. Others are reporting more. Basically makes your iPad Air 128GB next to worthless.

I have tried everything in the forum. The last thing i tried was a erase all and restore from iTunes using iOS 8.0.2 on 9/26/14. Everything worked for 3 days then the issue reoccurred (9/29/14). Not sure what the root cause is.
