Old device shown in iCloud account

I had an iPhone 4s which I have given to my wife, but before I handed it over I switched off find my iPhone and reset the device, but the phone is still showing up under my devices in my iCloud account along with my new phone.

How do I delete it from my account?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), iPhone 6 - 128gb

Just to add to discussion, I'm also having this problem with my iCloud account. I did all the things to disassociate my old iPhone 5 from my account before erasing it, shut off Find my Phone, signed out of iCloud on the device, and then erased it. The iPhone 5 has been established on my wife's iCloud account and shows there in Find my iPhone and her iCloud settings, and it's still showing up in my iCloud settings... There are no icloud backups of the iPhone 5 in my account and in iTunes the iPhone 5 isn't a device showing up associated with my ID. This is clearly a bug on the Apple Cloud backend and hopefully they will come up with a fix.

Same issue on my end as well. Sold 5S to Gazelle over a month ago and still 5S is listed under setting in iCloud.com Apple does not give ability to remove device from that section of iCloud. I read in a post that Apple says once someone signs in to the phone it will remove it from my device list, but I am thinking that Gazelle sells or gives the phones to folks that may not even use an apple id to use the phone. This *****!

I just got off the phone with apple care. Spoke with Pedro a senior advisor. First Pedro tried to tell me that I erased the phone before I turned off find my iphone, I told him that was not true. He kept telling me that the device was still signed in and for the 5th time I had to tell him that Gazelle would not have excepted or paid me if the 5S I sold to them was not deactivated from my account and was also erased. After some 45 minutes and screen sharing they came on and told me that eventually the 5S will drop off my device list. I told them that there were many of us having the same issue he replied that he was aware. I would call back and try to speak with someone else but I just don't feel like explaining again to a new apple care rep. So it looks like until apple realizes that it is on the iCloud end we are stuck with having old devises on our device list. If someone else has any luck speaking with apple care please let us know.

I Spoke to apple last week. They have assured me they know of the issue and are trying to resolve it. You can not remove a device you no longer own from iCloud , nor can they. It does not and will not effect you or the new owner in any way. It's more of an inconvenience than anything else.

bottom line is , gotta live with it on your iCloud account until apple resolve

As I posted earlier in the thread, it absolutely does affect you to have old devices listed. If you use two-factor authentication, iCloud will try to send push notifications for authentication to those old devices. In my case, I don't even get th option to send to my new devices because my old ones are listed instead. It's a huge problem and not just an annoyance.

I spoke to apple via chat. God bless the chap that tried to help but he couldnt. He tried all the things others here have said.

I even went as far as erasing it via 'find my iphone' and then setting the ipad up with another family members apple ID. Still there. Doesnt delete no matter what I try.

Planning to sell the ipad soon but dont want to until this is solved.

PS

when i signed my ipad up on the other apple ID after erasing it, it did not show up on the other apple ID. So maybe its broken both ways?

I encountered the same issue it seems that the reason that this happens is that you need to sign the device out of iCloud before you delete the content and settings (unfortunately Apple do not tell you this in their instructions on what to do before selling your phone).

Fortunately I discovered this before I sent my iPhone 5 off for sale. To delete it I had to restore the iPhone using my iTunes / iCloud backup. After you have completed that:-

Go to settings > iCloud

Scroll to the bottom and click on Sign Out

It brings up a warning about deleting documents click sign out again

You are then asked to enter your password - do this and click "Turn off"

You will now find it has been deleted from iCloud.

Of course you then need to go through the process of deleting all documents and settings from your phone again.

I appreciate this does not help if you no longer have access to the phone I could not find a way to delete it remotely either.

Answer from another discussion :

"I spoke with 2 Apple representatives for one hour trying to figure this out. The supervisor said that this happens to be a glitch in the system. However he also said that the iCloud website should reset every 90 days and when it does any "ghost" devices should be removed automatically, if not currently signed in to iCloud. Hope this helps."
