Can't Download iOS 8

Every time I try to download iOS on iTunes, the time keeps going up by 100s of hours at a time, what is going on?

iPhone 5s, iOS 7.1.2

  • It's just a guess but I'll bet it's the price of success. I downloaded IOS 8 to my iPhone 5S at 6:00 A.M. EDT on Sunday morning, only because i had to drive my wife to the start of the Philadelphia Rock and Roll Half Marathon. Otherwise I'd have been in bed like the majority of the east coast. Wifi took the time you'd expect for a gig plus. Later, when traffic on the net was awake, I tried to update the iPad and the estimate was 36 hours. Even then it crapped out with an error message! If you're desperate, pick a time when the USA is in bed for sure!

Ditto here - also on the east coast on Fios at home. Was able to do phone and powerbook on Thurs/Fri but have been battling with iPad since then. I am throwing in the towel for a few days. It seems the issue is FiOs, thanks Verizon ;-( I have tried over wifi, plugged in to computer; late at night or early in the morning and it doesn't matter. It is either 132hrs+ or 56hrs+ for download time and it times out within the hour. It wasn't quick with my phone or laptop but at least it worked. Though I'm reading on other threads about messed up download/upload speeds since the update, especially with iPads and iPods so maybe we have all dodged a bullet!

Same problem and I'm on AT&T. My mother was able to update the exact same iPhone as mine on the exact same network in 15 -20 minutes, but when we tried her iPad and my iPhone, the times fluctuate from 24 - 49 hours. Most of the time I give up on it, but if I do leave it connected I get hit with the 'Network Timed Out' message. I've updated plenty of times in the past and nothing like this has ever happened. And what it this 'Contacting Apple iPhone Support Site' thing? Never seen that before. It's been a few days now that I've been trying this, and I've tried it at all hours of the day and night with zero success. Glad to see I'm not the only one experiencing it, and it's not just my cable provider that is having the problem, but I really hope this gets resolved soon.

All,

I was having the same issue with not being able to complete the ios 8 update via iTunes. I then read a tip from the apple website about the easiest way to update to ios 8. go to general, software update. I noticed I had an update in progress that was paused. I pressed resume and the download started back up (on the ipad, not iTunes). the download has completed and I now the have the preparing update status.

I suspect a problem somewhere between Verizon and Apple. I have 75/75 FiOS service in my house, and I'm unable to download IOS 8. I've tried rebooting my iMac, my iPhones, and my FiOS router, and still no joy. Meanwhile, I have a friend on FiOS in another state and he had no trouble.

I ended up going to the Apple Store to use their WiFi, and I got the download in 7 minutes, so I know it isn't a problem with Apple's servers.

I've read other threads like this that also point to Verizon. So far, Verizon has not owned up to it. My guess is, they do a perfunctory ping test to see that the packets get through, but aren't really doing any troubleshooting to figure out the problem because they're viewing this as nothing more than a few individuals having trouble.

This is - in my professional opinion (I'm a network specialist) - a Verizon problem.

Then why is it happening via iTunes on people's computers? If it were just a network issue, it wouldn't have taken me 2 hours to download a 139mb update to my Mac operating system, or nearly an hour to download a 60mb update to my Safari. I watched these downloads begin and they were moving at roughly 64kb a second. Verizon network problems wouldn't have affected my Mac.
