usb connectivity in car not working after ios 8 update

Hi,

I can no longer access music on my iPhone 5 via the USB connectivity in my 2014 Chrysler 300 since I updated to ios 8. Before the update this feature was operating without any issues.

Is this happening to anyone else? If so is Apple aware of this issue?

Just a further update on the use of my iPhone 6 in my BMW. Following the update to IOS 8.2, it seemed to resolve my problems and I was able to play and control my music (and audiobooks) though my car's system. That continued for a short period but the difficulties I previously had, surfaced again. I have discovered however that I can get some control on the car's system and my experience might help some people who are encountering problems. First off, I start up my car and while still at rest (of course!!), I then open an album or audiobook on my iPhone and then connect to my car's entertainment system via its usb port. This gives me full control through the car's system while driving or at rest. However turning off the car invariably breaks the link and I have to go through the same process again to re-establish control. At least on a journey, I can have full control of my iPhone's music (audiobooks) on the car's system. I hope this 'work-around' helps others with the problem.

This has been bugging me for ages and i'm glad I checked this thread. I have a Nissan Note 2014 and I've been having exactly the same issues listed.

I avoided jumping on iOS 8 straight away as there are always teething problems after launch. Eventually, I got on board with iOS 8.2 and that was a big mistake. Ever since then my 5c has been driving me nuts when connecting in the car. I get constant connectivity problems, meaning it won't play music or even charge. I also noticed it appears to always be on MIX/SHUFFE despite me not putting it on that setting. Music won't play, despite it listing my albums/artists etc. I even tried changing the cable but the same problem occurs.

Never had any problems previously with same phone/same car. This isn't really a Bluetooth issue, as the music plays via USB. Definitely a device problem, and definitely a iOS 8 problem. 8.2 still has this bug. Please pay attention and acknowledge Apple.

Have been using IOS 8.3 for a few weeks as an Apple Public Beta tester and it has largely eliminated the problems I was encountering in controlling my iPhone 6's iPod. However the full public version of IOS 8.3 has now been made available and following installation in my iPhone a short time ago, I now seem to have full functionality in my BMW as before. Seems like the Apple "Bods" have been listening!! 🙂

Been using 8.3 for a few days now and, at first, all seemed well. Improvements in USB connection consistency.

However, the old devil struck again this morning. Plugged in iPhone four times and got the same error messages and unable to connect.

In the end, i had to close all active apps before i could get the **** thing to work.

Still a problem Apple. That's months now where my iPhone cannot charge in car and/or play music. Pretty useless phone for someone on the move!

I have a Pioneer double din system and have tried all the suggestions on this thread. No luck. I'm using an iphone 5 connected to the system via USB. What's funny is my iphone 4 works just fine. I updated to ios 8.3 but it did not fix the problem. My ipod music will play but after about 15 min. all function keys will cease.to operate. No skip, repeat pause, etc. I have been to the Apple Store twice with no luck. I called the Sacramento Ca. store a few days ago and the sales person put me in touch with a guy that solved the same problem for someone not long before I called. The guy got on the phone and asked me to tell him my issue so I did. After I finished there was silence then the line disconnected. I called back but didn't have a name to give. I went into the apple store but no one had an answer. I'm not getting a iphone 6 if they cannot fix this issue. I'm telling all my friends not to get the iphone 6.

Have to say my iPhone 6 has been functioning fully in my BMW through the USB connection. A thought! When I moved to the iPhone 5 from my iPhone 4, I used the Apple lightning connector to link my Apple/BMW Y-Cable (which had the original 30-pin connector) to my phone and this worked. However because of the sharp bend in the cable when storing it in the armrest, it eventually broke at the connection point. So I went to my BMW dealer for a new Y-Cable with a lightning connector. However, I had to try a few cables (apparently, there are a number to suit various car models!!) before hitting on the correct one for my particular car. Might be worth checking with your car dealer. I must say having full functionality for my iPhone's music in my car is bliss!

FIXED FIXED FIXED!! This is an update to my original post on 4/19. I thought I would give Apple Support one more chance. I called and after being on hold forever I spoke to a very nice man. He worked on my connection issue for some time with no luck ( I had asked to speak to a supervisor to begin with but I let him have a shot at it). He then put a senior tech supervisor on the line. After explaining all the frustration I had been dealt he said it sounds like the updates were not transmitting all the previous info. to each other so he had me do a system backup then restore. So, I backed up my iphone 5 then restored it (I lost contact with the tech when the restore started). It took about 40 minutes to complete. I restarted my phone then reconnected my Y cable into my car stereo. Everything seemed to be working but the real test was will it work an hour from now or tomorrow. I have had no issues to date. Finally! I hope this works for others.

Have been happy with the IOS 8.3 update and its functionality with my BMW entertainment system after the frustration of earlier IOS updates. However, as a Public Beta tester, I installed the latest version(IOS 8.4) today and lost my connection. The new IOS moves audiobooks out of the MusicApp on the iPhone to iBooks. This meant that I could play it on the iPhone using the iBooks App. I could only play it through the car system, by connecting via my USB cable and commencing it to play directly on iPhone itself. The whole idea is to full control though the car's Carplay function which is a new element being introduced by car-makers or entertainment system manufacturers. If you have an older car like me - then IOS 8.4 is going to present a problem. I have reinstalled IOS 8.3 for car functionality. I'm not sure how the new Music App will function through an older car system - I didn't try it out.
