usb connectivity in car not working after ios 8 update

Hi,

I can no longer access music on my iPhone 5 via the USB connectivity in my 2014 Chrysler 300 since I updated to ios 8. Before the update this feature was operating without any issues.

Is this happening to anyone else? If so is Apple aware of this issue?

Can confirm 8.1.1 did not fix the issue for me.

I have been able to reliably replicate the issue. Here's what I've found:

After a reboot, the phone continues to place nice when connected via USB to my 2013 Nissan Pathfinder SL. It does so over a number of days - in fact I've not seen it not work.

What does cause it to not work every time is playing any sort of video on my phone - YouTube (in the app), from a website, from Facebook - doesn't matter. As soon as I've played a video, the iPhone will no longer work via USB in the car.

So, for now, my workaround for this bug is to power cycle my phone any time I (or, more likely, my kids) have watched video on my phone. Annoying, but not impossible. It's definitely far, far from meeting my expectations of Apple.

BTW, for all of you that are wanting to jump ship to Android, you might confirm that your car supports it. Nissan does not support music from Android devices connected via USB very well - not at all in the Pathfinder. Yours might be a different situation based on your vehicle.

Same problem for me! Apple you need to sort this ASAP!!!

Country: Australia

Vehicle: Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 2014

Phone: iPhone 6

iOS: 8.1

Cable: Genuine Apple Lightning Cable

Issue: When connecting via USB cable the stereo does not play music, no songs are visible or selectable. The system does recognise the device as an iPod (which is normal) but does not display any track info or play. However it does connect if I do a full reboot (home & lock keys). It then fails once a video inside Facebook, Youtube or Safari has been played. As per the post by kjb1976 above.

Works fine with Bluetooth, but when plugged in to charge I can't listen to music?!? An ongoing issue Apple, that requires a fix please.

Same problems here,

iPhone 5s, iOS 8.1.1., 2013 Volvo V60 (I live in Belgium)

eset and re-pairing suggestions mentioned above my iPhone 5S still behaves very odd when it comes to iPod connectivity on the car. Skipping/pausing songs works sometimes but not always. Sometimes the phone refuses to connect through the iPod interface. Sometimes skipping a song returns to the previous song, over and over again. All this worked flawless with iOS 7. Car is a 2013 Volvo V60. Bluetooth calling etc. works fine, problem is iPod related. Even replaced the iPod lightning cable but the problem persists. Quick resetting works for a little while but the weird behavior always returns. Very frustrating...

I have a 2015 Toyota Sienna and have this same problem! I'm using the most up to date software 8.1.1 on both my iPhone 6 and my wife's iPhone 5 and the USB port doesn't recognize either phone is connected. I tried plugging in an iPhone 5 with iOS 7 and it worked perfectly. This is extremely frustrating because Apple support is NO help!!!

anybody had better luck than I have getting answers to a solution?

Dear All,

Went to the dealer with my car and got insight in a internal Volvo document describing the problems since iOS 8.

Seems like the iPhone uses the "Last connection wins" method to connect with the car stereo/multimedia system.

In this story it is important to know whether the USB connection is established before or after the bluetooth connection.

If the iPhone is paired with the car over bluetooth (for calling) it will use the bluetooth audio streaming since that connection

is already established. If you want to listen to music over the usb/ipod conection you'll need to manually choose that connection

in the car AND on the iPhone in the Airplay menu (option dock connector). I can't recall that option being there in iOS7?

In short: having troubles with audio in iOS8 in the car over usb?

Try changing to dock connector on the iPhone in the Airplay menu.

(pull up menu > Airplay > Dock Connector).

Hope this works for anybody. For me, it does! 🙂

Has anyone done testing against 3rd party (non-head units? I have 2 cars with different Alpine HUs. Based on other posts in this thread the 2 things that helped were:

1. upgrading to 8.1.1

2. restarting the iPhone before I attempt to plug it into the HU.

(Please note that these steps didn't help me on an individual basis, but they seemed to work in tandem.)

Even with these steps used a prerequisites for playback, I seem to lose HU controls after some time. Loss of HU control seems to be most prevalent if I've attempted to skip a number of tracks at once using the HU controls, but I haven't been able to empirically test as yet. I'm researching firmware upgrades from Alpine, but I know that one of my HUs is at least 5 years old and is not likely to have any updates available.

Anyone else have other things to try that I might have missed?
