iPhone 6 Plus Keeps Crashing PLEASE HELP!

I am a huge Apple fan, so I ask this question wishing and hoping my iPhone 6 Plus would just perform the way I know it should be.

Since restoring from my old iPhone 5S backup onto my 6 Plus 128GB (AT&T) running iOS 8.0, my 6 Plus is laggy (animations are very slow and stutter), freezy (after hitting "done" it often freezes for a good five seconds before registering the click), buggy (the keyboard sometimes doesn't appear at all, the "halos" around the folders on the home screen sometimes appear and sometimes don't, seems totally arbitrary), and crashy (whenever doing certain tasks like fast app switching, trying to change wallpaper, and others, the phone crashes, turns off the radios, then shows the Apple screen before rebooting). The crashing is happening once every five to ten minutes, making the phone VERY FRUSTRATING TO USE.

I have tried manually restarting the phone, HOME + SLEEP reset to the Apple screen, and restoring again...My next step is a factory reset and manual reinstallation of all my apps again, which is making me sick just thinking about it...

All of these things scream SOFTWARE to me, but what do I know...is anyone else experiencing these issues on the 6 Plus? Should I just be waiting for an OS update, or did I just get a lemon phone? As I said, I love Apple, and this is not a post to flame (so please save your "Go buy an Android" for someone who cares). I just want my shiny new phone to work!!! Any help is appreciated.

IIt seems to me that the new 8.1.1 is trying to pass off the problem to apps relieving Apple of any issues on their end. Something tells me the way ios8 operates the large screen on the 6+ units are taking most of my ram. After a clean boot, I seem to only have 22% of my ram left for actual usage. I tried to run my garmin app today, and app that gave me no issues before on 2 different older iPhone models.. I could multi task a pandora stream or just play music while using GPS and could switch and search the interweb when looking for something.. Multitasking worked and transitioned as my apple prducts should... Stability. I no longer have that stability, apps seem to be crashing becayse they have no left over ram to operate. 2 identical phones are doing this. Forget turning the orientation of my device while watching a video, instacrash! Why don't I have more available ram??? My phone, the phone part actually crashed when I get a phone call and I am multitasking. This can't be ignored, I hope it's not ignored. 2 - iPhone 6+ 64GB exhibiting the same behavior. Both restored fully 1 with backup restore and the other set up as a new phone. I couldn't run my full restore because I had too many bookmarks saved in folders (over 500 icons saved in folders. Why such little ram left to operate apps?

I reported my problems with my original iPhone 128 GB 6 Plus earlier in this thread. This is an update. My iPhone 6 Plus was replaced at the Apple store in the Grove. With the replacement iPhone, I did not do a restore from backup, but instead redownloaded all of my App purchases from the App store and verified that they were all working with iOS 8 and the 6 Plus. Several older Apps were not working, and I deleted these from the 6 Plus. Obviously this took a considerable amount of time, but I wanted to make sure that I had a clean install. Unfortunately my replacement iPhone 6 Plus still restarts frequently, even though it is not as bad as my original 6 Plus which eventually hung in a continual restart loop. The real discouraging fact is that the iPhone tends to restart by itself after periods of non-use with no 3rd party applications active (I have been closing all Apps after using them to minimize problems). The restarts also tend to occur during App updates or when going between display screens or folder screens, and often when rearranging Apps. Restarts also tend to occur in succession after a previous restart, and only Apple core Apps are running. Applying power to the iPhone does tend to reduce the restarts, but not eliminate them. Upgrading to iOS 8.1.1 has had little effect other than to make the restarts slightly more frequent.

My wife has a 64GB iPhone 6 which has worked perfectly and has had no restarts. We were out today and I pulled my iPhone out to use it only to find my iPhone 6 Plus was in a constant restart cycle with the Apple logo constantly on (fortunately I was able to do a manual reboot when we got home some time later - which I couldn't do with my original iPhone). Fortunately my wife was with me with her working iPhone 6 when mine went into a constant restart, so we were able to use her phone. But my real concern is that my iPhone 6 Plus is unreliable, and if there is a true emergency I quite likely may not be able to quickly use it. With 2 iPhone 6 Pluses exhibiting this same problem for me, it seem that there is either a serious Apple hardware problem or iOS 8 software problem with the largest iPhone 128 GB 6 Plus which does not exist in the other iPhones. While I do have a lot of Apps on my iPhone 6 Plus, I had considerably more on my previous iPhone 5 (64 GB model), and it never exhibited any restarts.

Per my tests previously, and using 2 separate iPhone 6, I am certain this is an iOS problem. iOS cannot handle a large number of apps installed.

Oddly, my iPhone 5 too was unaffected, so the problem is clearly at least worse on the iPhone 6. Perhaps with more apps the iPhone 5 would eventually have crashed too, but I only had memory to install 1200 on that. It was fine and NEVER crashed.

[Originally posted 6 Nov, on p14 on this thread. Repeated for those who might have missed it]

I have performed a detailed experiment which has found the "cause" of the problem. The root cause (hardware or faulty iOS) is of course unknown to me, although I am sure Apple engineers already know it but are not disclosing the information for commercial reasons.

In summary, my conclusion is that anything over around 793 apps installed causes noticeable instability. There may be infrequent crashes even at 793 apps, but none were noted in a short test period. Size of apps or other non app files have no effect on crashing behaviour.

EXPERIMENT:

iPhone 6 Plus 128GB crashes repeatedly, even sitting idly untouched. It always crashes when it goes into sleep mode (screen off), or when manually put into sleep mode using the power button. It also has a number of bugs, including always crashing when attempting to change wallpaper. Cannot take screenshots.

A replacement identical iPhone showed exactly the same behaviour, but additionally has unreliable wifi.

USAGE:
ios 8.1
Normal (not zoomed) view - I have found that changing zoom mode appears to be a placebo effect
88 songs
45 videos
388 photos
1052 apps
51.0 GB available free

Decided on the following test methodology as it is opposite to Apple's suggested technique of using a fresh install and installing apps one by one. This way I started with a supposedly flawed backup/installation, and removed files.

TEST 1:
Put phone into Airplane mode. Touch ID and passcode off. No iCloud.

Crashing as above.

TEST 2:
Deleted all photos, all videos and all music.
Crashing as above. No change.

TEST 3:
Decided to delete the 12 biggest Apps, to see if App size was a factor.
1040 apps
62.8GB free
51.3GB used
Crashing as above. No change. BUT can now take screen shots.

TEST 4:
Decided to randomly start deleting apps.
980 apps
48.6GB used
65.5GB free
More stable. But folder backgrounds still vanishing. Crashed when trying to change wallpaper.

TEST 5:
Deleted more random apps.
908 apps
47.1GB used
67.0GB free
No change to above.

TEST 6:
Deleted more random apps.
888 apps
46.6GB used
67.5GB free
Appears stable, no crashing. Will not crash even when repeatedly putting into sleep & wake modes. Folder backgrounds present. No crashes when trying to change wallpaper, but will not actually effect any changes.

TEST 7:
Deleted more random apps.
793 apps
43.7GB used
70.3GB free
Appears 100% stable, no crashing. Will not crash even when repeatedly putting into sleep & wake modes. I tried filling the memory with lots of big games running in the background. It would not crash. Folder backgrounds present at all times. Wallpapers can be changed at will. No abnormal behaviour noted whatsoever.

RESULT: iPhone is STABLE!

PS. could also take screenshots again, at 793 apps.

I've just had a pretty fruitless dicussion about this issue on How to prove your iPhone 6 / 6 Plus 64 / 128GB is faulty which may help to show that this issue is specific to the iPhone 6 - but not the iPhone 5. The three big posters that replied to me though all act like disrespectful trolls - so their replies are unlikely to be of any value.

My next steps are to swap the iPhone at an Apple Store and then see if the same problem repeats. If it does, I'm planning to go as public as possible with my evidence that this is an iPhone hardware or iOS issue that Apple is trying to hide.

I once read a post and it is said that iPhone 6 Plus indeed have the reboot problem. Some netizens had a test on it and found that when they installed 1121 apps on iPhone 6 Plus, 128 GB, the reboot problem would happen again and again. When they deleted apps to 699, the problem stopped. Maybe it is because that iPhone 6 Plus used TLC flash instead of MLC flash.

Nov 24, 2014 6:56 PM in response to senseinan

Has nothing to do with iOS 8.0 as iPad Air 128GB with iOS 7.0 had the problem for the past 12 months.

Apple is aware of this and did nothing to fix.

One could get perhaps 5-30 minutes of use with iOS 7.x, but iOS 8.x made it unstable and constant reboot from the update on - even prior to any Apps being run besides the standard Springboard Programming and other iOS system files, which continued to crash (and be the only Apps crashing).

I'd like to suggest that we organise ourselves by country so we can channel our complaints collectively either to Apple (who will likely carry on denying the problem) or other consumer organisations.

I'm based in the UK and am prepared to involve BBC Watchdog / Which? Consumers Association and others if you think this will help.

Suggest we contact each other through a social media app - (can someone suggest a good one?) that can keep our identities secure if we choose but still allow us to relate everything thats needed to get these other consumer organisations involved. They may not be interested if its just a couple of us - so the more who can get involved the better.

Nov 26, 2014 4:43 AM in response to nuppar

Hi, nuppar, I think involving consumer organisations should be a good idea. I'm based in Italy, and I have had the same problem. Apple changed my device (iPhone 6+, 128 GB), but sometimes the problem arises again. The same problem, more seriously, is involving now my old iPad 4, 64 GB, and Apple is also providing to change it. I think it should be a problem mixed among hardware and software. Anyway if you need to contact me for any iniziative you can get me at my email address:

My iPhone 6Plus 128GB was delivered to me in late October 2014. I have the latest OS (8.1.1) Out of the box the telephone's audio feature did not work. All telephone calls must use the speaker feature in order for anyone to hear me if I hold the phone to my ear and attempt to speak. The speaker button must be on. The phone feature works on bluetooth so I'm able to use it hands free while driving or using other bluetooth microphone device. Verizon told me they would replace the phone in three weeks but I got a message from Verizon that it wouldn't be shipped for six weeks. In the past few days I am now experiencing the same issues described in the postings. The phone goes into constant rebooting loops and freezes and I experienced the blue screen of death this morning. It also does an automatic reboot loop frequently when I'm talking on the phone. I did a hard reset but (Reset All Settings) but haven't done total reset (Erase All Content and Settings) as I don't think this reset will actually do anything based on the other postings I've seen. I've heard that anyone with 500-700 apps is experiencing these problems, but I only have about 75 apps. Soooo.....awaiting the new device which is supposed to be shipped mid December. Hopeful that they are fixing the issues and that's why the delay in shipping as opposed to delayed shipment due to demand. I will also place a call today to Apple support to make them aware of these issues.

Nov 26, 2014 10:02 AM in response to nuppar

Nuppar, that is a great idea! I too am in the UK.

I agree, if lots of us complain to BBC Watchdog, Apple will get a LOT of terrible PR over this - and may just fix it.

btw, I am NOT saying 793 apps is a "magic number". I deleted random apps in groups, and at 793 my phone was stable for 2 hours. This number will vary a little for each user, based on the type of apps i.e. some apps have lots of files, others have few.

After the above test I wiped my phone, and reinstalled everything, because I needed many of those apps. I am now slowly deleting apps 1 by 1, and the phone is starting to crash less. I have 965 apps now, so it does crash.

Nov 28, 2014 9:21 AM in response to JasHayre

Sounds great but I have just under 200 apps on my phone (have never come near 793 apps) -- and i'm in a crash loop that shows black screen and apple icon screen over and over. Hard reset does nothing. It began when i tried to use iTunes.

Of course this happens on Black Friday, the last thing i want to do is go near an Apple Store.

So disappointed, i've been using iphones since 2007. Never thought i'd say this but a Galaxy might be in my future 😟
