IPAD2 very slow after IOS 8 upgrade

After IOS 8 upgrade many aplications ( Safari, Facebook, etc) load very, very slow (comparing with 7 version) , with a significant delay of more than 10 seconds...

Who can I solve this problem? Any workaround?

PD

Apple should better test the software before delivering.

Thanks.

It's also encouraging that there is evidence that Apple had identified this is an issue and is prepping an update (8.1.1), a release date still as yet undetermined.

Solutions and Options:

So there are some solutions on this thread and in other places that you could try. If you choose not to tinker with your iPad then your other option is to wait it out for another update, not knowing when that will be, but it's still an option.

....and we all know that sometimes there are variations of mass-produced devices where components (RAM, drives, screens and so on) have been supplied by different manufactures (because one single manufacturer simply may not meet the demand).

So, just one single iPad will not be sufficient. And the information about the device will have to be very specific.

At last some hope.

I have tried all the fix' and more than once but it's still not the same. My Girlfriend and daughter i Pad 2's are on pre IOS8 and work just fine.

Now to keep in the ToR's (sigh). It has been suggested by some that you should occasionally re set your device back to factory settings. But? Will that not mean you will have to upload IOS 8? Therefore in the girls case risk their perfectly functional i Pad 2's turning into sluggish versions of their former selfs? A risk we are not prepared to take.

Thanks to all of you who keep this thread alive, looks like Apple are finally getting off their corporate *** and listening to their customers.

And to the naysayers, don't bother with a rude or condescending reply because I just can not be assed to read anything any more that starts with your names

OK guys, 8.1.1. is out. There are several reports of users seeing improved performance of their iPads 2 running 8.1.1. You can read them yourself, e.g. at macrumorsdotcom.

I have installed it on my iPad 3. No dramatic improvement, Safari feels a bit faster, app switching perhaps too.... placebo effect? I haven't done any measurements... otherwise no major problems here, at least for now.

Installed 8.1.1 as a complete clean setup, no backup or restore so totally out of the box. I haven't installed anything at all that Apple doesn't install as default and I have to say that it is much better.

Speed tests are good over wifi, cut and paste is fixed, no lookups as yet, keyboard is responsive, just need to check some websites that were causing a problem. Router is an Apple Extreme latest firmware.

Only other actions were:

Turned off keyboard clicks

Cleared History and Website Data in Safari

Turn off and back on again

I was having all the usual problems.

It's just a shame it happened in the first place and that it took so long to fix it. Acknowledgement would have been appreciated.

8.1.1 shows much improved performance on my iPad2. Still noticing a bit of jerky movements when some apps close, but so much smoother. Copy and paste, which was an issue yesterday is corrected, too.

I feel some sort of vindication 😉 and I didn't have to jump through hoops to trying a bunch of things to fix it.

I've posted elsewhere, but this thread is spot on topic. Our ol' iPad2 was running marginally well on 8. We don't use it for much—it's my wife's, and her main squeeze is the MBP, with the iPad mainly for travel and Kindle. Today I took it to 8.1.1. My bad. I understood 8.1.1 to address some of these iPad2 performance problems. Silly boy. Or doofus. Now performance is like someone walking through double-thick mud. Wi-Fi as slow as DSL? Heck we got Wi-Fi as slow as dialup—or maybe even pencil and paper. Slow as an IBM 360/20, for those who may know what I mean. iCloud Drive, previously enabled, is now entirely crippled. Apps that use it out-and-out crash—period. Including Pages, Sketchbook Pro, and mSecure. For iCloud Drive, I tried the (agonizingly slow) process of turning off and then back on, no luck. I tried signing out then back in. No luck. The iPad2 is essentially a gimp, unless my sweetie can be satisfied with Kindle, the weather, and a few other small meaningless apps.

I believe I found the optimum combination to make my iPad2 as good as before, maybe not 100% but at least 80% of what it used to be.

For those who upgraded to iOS 8.1.1 but still facing sluggish and freezing issue, this may help. Even those who do not wish to upgrade to iOS 8.1.1 but want to get a much better performance, this could help as well.

1.4GB of free space is required to upgrade to iOS 8.1.1, As such, I was forced to delete some files. Previously only a few hundreds MB of free space available.

Guess what, I noticed at least 50% of speed improvements after I got 1GB of free space, even before I upgraded to iOS 8.1.1

Once I upgrade to iOS 8.1.1, I got at least 80% performance improvement.

Previously in iOS7, a few hundreds of MB(or even less than 100 mb) is good enough for smooth performance and speed. I believe in IOS 8, a minimum of 1GB is required.

I am happy to get back my 'stolen' iPad2. I know how frustrated using a sluggish iPad2 that keep freezing, feel like smashing it onto the wall.

I guess Apple did test on iPad2 before iOS8 release and did not notice any performance issue simply because the tested device has plenty of GBs left. Apple does not realize iPad2 users has a choking amount of apps and data, with almost no free space available.

So guys, try to make at least 1GB of free space on your iPad2. Please give your feedback if this work for you.

If it works, I guess it is about time for Apple to give extra caution/statement on the upgrade to iOS8:-

"Older device need at least 1GB of free space for optimum speed and performance."

But I still notice some issue when downloading or upgrading apps. It is slow and sluggish when the apps is in the installing phase. The screen may freeze and the installing take ages. But I can live with it because you're not installing a new app everyday.

What perfotmanve issues, Apple said there weren't any it was our imagination.

OH wait the new update says it corrects performance issues with the ipad2 ! That can't be right. Can it?

maybe Star Traveler would like to comment on this please. I notice you have been quiet on here since Apples official line contradicts all the garbage spouted by some on here.

Nov 18, 2014 6:03 AM in response to Gazamonk

Yes right. We all just imagined the upgrade to IOS 8 ruined our ipad2.

I recently called with Apple holland but they weren't aware of any specific ipad2 issues. He had two tips for me after I send some logging to him. Facebook was the main troublemaker and I should reinstall the network. If it wasn't ok then there definitely was a hardware issue. NOT!!!

This looked a bit better for a while but unfortunately this wax wishful thinking. So I decided to do the update to,8.1.1. I cannot yet confirm that all issues have been solved, but the speed looks better with less crashes. Copy / paste looks also better. Only battery use isn't as it should be. That was also an issue I believe.

For now I keep my fingers crossed. 😉

After upgrading to 8.1.1 on my iPad 2 (32Gb) I would say I got back about 75-80% of the pre-iOS 8 performance. 🙂 This is a big improvement, although I still notice some sluggishness with a few operations.

Dunno if you have been following my "whining" on here since the beginning, but.... I have an update.

As we had NOTHING to lose (not like anything was going to perform worse than it was with 8.1), we have updated all 27 devices that we have for our family and business (I've picked up a few extras that clients just gave to us as they upgraded)... This includes iPad 2, 3, and mini's.

Without a question - each device is performing far better than with 8.0.0, .1, .2 or 8.1. I am going to guestimate that we have close to 90% of the speed back in comparison the same devices running 7x. This is do-able.

I have not had a lot of time to check the other bugs other than the slowness, crashing/hanging apps, and input issues, but the speed is far better.

Browsing has just almost returned to 7x speeds.

At this time I am going to recommend to all my clients who have issues (We have 413 current open tickets for slow/buggy iThings!) to go ahead and install the 8.1.1 update as it is certainly better.

I did not experience any additional data loss as did with the 8.0.x and 8.1 updates.

Thank you to Apple for FINALLY getting a few of the most blatant problems at least closer to resolved. At least *my* life will be a little better.

Hopefully my clients are going to be happy too!
