IPAD2 very slow after IOS 8 upgrade

After IOS 8 upgrade many aplications ( Safari, Facebook, etc) load very, very slow (comparing with 7 version) , with a significant delay of more than 10 seconds...

Who can I solve this problem? Any workaround?

PD

Apple should better test the software before delivering.

Thanks.

I'm glad that works. In case you need to do a "clean system install" later on sometime, to give you a new system (which that procedure you did ... won't do, the following is the way to do that, plus a troubleshooting methodology, too.

Follow this procedure for a Troubleshooting Methodology ... basically reset to factory default condition -BUT- be sure to do the following methodically and also to follow the part with Apple Support!

First you want to make sure you have several backups of your data and done with a couple of "different" sources. Be sure to understand what data is backed up and what is NOT on iCloud Backup and iTunes Backup. Use a variety of methods for backup ... you might check into Dropbox, in addition to your Apple options.

Then turn off your desktop anti-virus software when using iTunes for this reset to factory default. After you do that reset, then leave your iPad in its factory default state and see how it operates then. If you encounter any problems in that factory default state, then take it to Apple Support, and let them know that you have just reset it to that state with iTunes and have not put any of your data back on and it is operating in this fashion (whatever the problem is) in that pristine state. Make sure you keep that trouble ticket number, because if it has to be escalated through Apple Support, you're going to find all communications tied in with that number. If the lower level help isn't able to help you, then escalate it to a higher level to examine the problem. Keep at it with that trouble ticket number until Apple Support arrives at a solution to that problem. Be methodical and keep at it.

On the other hand, if everything is okay with the factory default condition, then restore your backup. Some people have discovered that the problem resides in the apps or something in the restored backup. If that's the case, then it's going to be trying and difficult to find out which developer's app is causing you the problem. And ... it's true ... that a developer not following Apple's instructions and guidelines for his app can CAUSE YOU TROUBLE. This kind of thing does happen from developers, especially when a new system upgrade comes out, because some developers ignore what Apple tells them about changes coming, and what they do BREAKS SOMETHING.

This is a troubleshooting methodology that you are going through. See it through to the end.

My issue was email crashes... After trying all other resets and deleting and re-adding mail accounts, I finally tried a factory reset on my iPad 2. I initially did the iOS 8.1.1 update on a Windows PC using the latest version of itunes. I used my iMac for the factory reset. First I transferred all pictures/purchases to my ipad2 library on the iMac using iTunes. Then I backed up the iPad2. Then I restored to the factory settings (with iOS 8.1.2). In a short time, iTunes asked if I wanted to use as new or restore backup. I opted to restore the previous backup. I'm happy to report my ipad2 can now access the Apple email app. It doesn't crash anymore. Time will tell if I created any other problems on the ipad2 in this process.

I upgraded my iPad 2 from iOS 7.x to 8.1.2 yesterday. Big mistake. Pages load at a snails pace, pages reload due to a "problem", videos stop, email takes forever to load. Generally way worse than iOS 7 which was worse than 6.x. The endless safari page reloads started in iOS 7. I was hoping iOS 8 would address this but it has caused many other problems. I've tried many of the suggested solution on this board but I don't think they are helping much.

It is time for Apple to fix iOS 8 for iPad2 or give us a very sweet deal to trade in our iPad 2 for a device that works. Might be time to sell your Apple stock if you have it.

Give your feedback to Apple, as Anne has done. feedback

I just wanted to update everyone about my experience with the 8.0.2 update to the update...

This has helped me a LOT....

  • The speed has increased 100% over-all. And I mean from opening apps for the first time, to re-opening one that is in the background. Shame it's still only half as fast as it was before the update to 8.0.0.
  • Copying and pasting seem to be resolved.
  • Crashing of apps has improved significantly. They crash half as frequently as before.
  • I have not seen the black or blue screen of death in 2 days. Fixed?
  • Broadband and wifi speed have improved - though still laggy in comparison to before.
  • Spontaneous reboot has not happened since the update to the update.
  • Entire freezing of the device for a second to as long as 15 seconds has not happened again.
  • I can upload a photo to facebook from within safari again (yeah, my life is complete).

While the device is better by far than it was when I updated to 8.0.0, I would STILL NOT RECOMMEND AN UPDATE to 8x for anyone with an iPad 2 or iPad 3. Stick with 7x and be happy. There is not enough added to make it worth the decrease in performance.

I thought this forum is for support with Apple devices. Complaining doesn't provide suggestions on how to improve the performance. Complaints can be made via other channels for example 1-800-275-2273.

So far, I have been making setting changes and the performance has indeed improved. Of course the performance is not what it was before with iOS 7, but at least the performance is much better.

  8. Settings > Notifications - disable notification for apps that don't interest you.

  10. When I use iPad for reading books only, I disable Wi-Fi. When I require Internet, I turn on Wi-Fi
  11. Settings > Safari > Search Engine Suggestions - disable, i just go to google.com for seraches
  12. Settings > Safari > Spotlight Suggestions - disable
  13. Settings > Safari > Quick Website Search - disable
  14. Settings > Safari > Preload Top Hit - disable

Note: Perform 1 and 2 first. For Safari settings, I use bookmarks so that I don't need most of the settings

As for cellular, I don't have any recommendations since my iPad is Wi-Fi only.

I know that this is a lot of changes. This is something we shouldn't have to do. However, I want to use my iPad - and these settings make my iPad work fine for now. Apple is listening and will provide a future update - so that we can revert the settings back to normal.

If anyone else have a suggestion, please let me know. I would like to hear and try it.

Thanks

AH, this is interesting - I think i've had a noticeable speedup, and I'm not sure what, exactly, caused it, but here's what I was doing, in case anyone manages to replicate it. Firstly, I should mention that I had already done many of the things discussed here - removing keyboards, disabled background processing, reducing motion, etc, and they had helped, but my ipad was still only just usable.

So I thought I would try a factory reset and restore, but first I needed to back up the iPad to my laptop. It used to be backed up to my iMac, but I'd sold that a couple of months ago, so there was no recent backup.

I plugged it into my laptop, started a backup and was told that the itunes library was synced with another machine; did I want to delete it and sync with this machine instead? I said yes.

Then I read that if you choose to encrypt your backups, passwords from the iPad are then also backed up, which makes life a lot easier after a restore. So I enabled that on my Macbook too, and did another backup. Then I had to go and do other things, so never got around to resetting and restoring.

But when I unplugged and tried using the iPad, I found it was a lot faster. Not iOS7 fast, but almost, and certainly no longer in the barely-usable category (As evidenced by the fact I'm using it to write this post!) Let's see if it lasts. In the meantime, here are some thoughts:

  • Perhaps the backlog of things which hadn't been backed up after a long delay was slowing it down
  • Perhaps it was trying to contact the old iMac for wifi syncing and failing repeatedly
  • Perhaps resetting the itunes library had a big effect - maybe just freeing up space, since the laptop has much less music actually on it than the iMac had, so the ipad now mostly just has links to download from iTunes Match. (I now have about 14G of my 64G free)
  • Perhaps some part of this process tidied up some stuff and allowed the earlier optimisations I'd tried to have more effect
  • Perhaps it will grind to a halt again after a while and I'll be disappointed.

But at the moment it looks good, so I thougt I'd share what I'd done before I forgot it. Hope it helps someone!

It's been a while and I wanted to follow-up with everything that I have gone through with my own iPad 2, iPad3 and iPad minis since I last posted. It also applies to almost 200 clients which my business serves.

Originally, I was having extremely slow response (lag) on these iPads after the upgrade to 8.0.0, then 8.0.1, then 8.0.2. We had tried everything. We had technicians and customers calling Apple, going to see the "geniuses". We scoured forums, we tried everything suggested.

Some of the problems were:

  • Extremely slow to open apps (safari, mail, etc).
  • Stock apps hanging for seconds at a time.
  • Typing lagging several seconds behind the input.
  • Crashes of stock apps, closing out at random
  • Crashes of stock apps during input - a lot of these.
  • Complete hang of the OS for several seconds.
  • Complete shutdown on the system - spontaneous reboot.
  • Lost notes.
  • Clipboard (copy/paste) totally hosed - random clips appearing.

These were across the board on the entire line of iPad 2, iPad3 and iPad mini. Everyone I encountered was experiencing various levels of these...

The good news is - after 8.1 came out, this fixed a number of the issues. Reloading as instructed here, also helped.

The bad news is - even after all attempted changes, help from the geniuses, help from apple, the problems have remained.

How did we get around them? Many were able to buy new iPad2 devices from online. Refurbs actually. Or via their local Verizon or AT&T store. These came with iOS 7x on them - and with that version of the OS, none of the problems existed.

Word of advice - if you obtain one of these devices with iOS 7x, you may wish to not upgrade it to any version of iOS 8x at this time. Why? Because those who have (myself included) as an experiment, immediately saw the same issues we had on our original devices. As recently as last week, we received a refurb iPad 2 with 7 on it. So hopefully they have some left. I have not heard of anyone buying a refurb yet that had iOS 8x pre-loaded on it, but that could change at any time.

That's the only way you will get the clipboard working again at this point..

Good luck...

John, I really appreciate your feedback as well. As so many others, I had significant problems after upgrading to 8.x. I've seen improvements after following recommendations in this forum but still running at about 75% of the original performance. The most significant improvement came after factory reset; and clearing the cache helped some as well. Fortunately I didn't lose files; but I can only imagine how painful that is.

Here's my plan, now that 8.1.1 is out, and there's been positive reports:

  • Manually back up via iTunes (pictures are already on iCloud, I really don't have any important documents)
  • Run Macgo iPhone Cleaner to see if it can clean anything up (I have a theory some of the source of the trouble was not the apps themselves, but files that need to be cleaned up)
  • Update and test

I'm glad I'm not in your shoes right now, but hopefully you will soon see the light at the end of the tunnel and you will someday look back with a big sigh of relief.

On a side note; I plan on writing a song entitled, Terms of Use. What do you think?

Here's the list of the most annoying issues that affect me since updating my iPad 2 64GB w/Cellular iPad to IOS 8:

EXTREMELY SLOW - When opening apps, or switching between them - We are talking just the built-in apps. Mail, Safari, Settings....

Extremely slow Wi-Fi AND broadband. The Wi-Fi is the worst though. Horrible. Page load times are 2 to 4x slower than my wife's iPad.

Battery life reduced by at least 25%. Used to make it all day long, now I am having to plug it in.

Heat - It is working so hard that the processor is heating up. That can't be healthy for it, and surely the majority of the power issues stem from this.

Copy/Paste not functioning correctly between browser windows. Oh this is frustrating. I just want to paste the URL of one website I am on to Facebook, for instance. Even though I COPY, it's pasting in info I clipped a earlier in the day to one browser tab, but if I open another one, it will paste the correct information. You never know what you are going to get.

Cannot post a photo to facebook by hitting the camera icon when leaving a reply or making a post (using web browser version)... It starts the upload, then just stops. I *CAN* go to photos, then SHARE it to facebook, but that doesn't allow me to post a photo along with a reply.

Multiple app crashes per day. This I can deal with. It's nothing new, it's just more frequent. Safari and Mail seem to be the major culprits. It wouldn't be so bad except it takes 2-4 seconds to reopen the crashed app. Sometimes as much as 10 seconds.

And that's just the annoying ones....

My iPad 2 is also very slow and choppy since updating to iOS 8. When I close an app, it returns to the home screen in a rather jerky and choppy manner. Prior to the update, the iPad 2 was entirely useable and suited to what I need it to do. It's a 64 GB version and is only using about half of it's total storage capacity. My iPhone 5, which I also updated, doesn't seem to have this problem but I surely hope the Mac upgrade happens quickly since iOS 8 killed the ability for the Mac and the iOS devices to sync properly due to the iCloud vs. iCloud Drive incompatibility that I only realized after the fact. This isn't what I expect from an Apple product.

Sep 24, 2014 4:42 AM in response to pacoKAS

Well, after about four hours of messing with my iPad yesterday, I can report that I am not much happier. Things got worse. The iPad started locking up, to where I couldn't even use the home button To get out of the safari browser, it would hang for 5 to 20 seconds and nothing would respond. Couldn't change tabs, or go home.

I attempted to roll back to iOS 7, which was okay, the firmware was fine, everything ran great, until I tried to recover my backup, which failed. In fact, it hung and told me I needed to take my iPad to apple.

I finally went back to iOS 8, without my backup... Just to test, and even without loading my own settings and apps, it was slower than iOS 7, by a very noticable margin.

my backup restored okay on the iOS 8 reload. And while the device is laggy, at least it is not locking up.

All of the odd bugs are still there, like the copy/paste issue... But, I can at least use the iPad again. Sigh.

very very frustrating!

Well.....I have to laugh, because you know you will.....eventually!

i have been patiently waiting for a larger iPad to come out...Hope it happens....

i Can't imagine you ditching and going elsewhere after you have had the best.

hope you rethink this out....before you waste your bucks on something that just won't compare in the end.

the best investment is in yourself....never forget....you are worth it...if it is a tool that allows you to work better.
