Why does Siri bluetooth connection in 2008 Toyota Prius with iOS 8 terminate outgoing call with message "call terminated by network" on Prius screen

Since installing iOS 8 , we can't get Siri to make outgoing calls with the Prius Bluetooth. Incoming calls work, but we get a message on the Prius screen, "call terminated by network" whenever we tell Siri to call out. She will recognize who we're calling, but as soon as the dialing starts, we get the call terminated message.

Any similar experience or ideas?

The only known solution to make your iPhone work with your Toyota vehcle is to revert to iOS 7. However, Apple is not allowing this.

The only other options are to replace your iPhone with an Android product, replace the car stereo with a newer one or get a new car.

People I know with more recent Toyota vehicles don't have this problem. There is no guarantee that replacing the car stereo would solve the problem. You would have to find a way to test it first. One of the nice things about my Prius is the way the car stereo, bluetooth and navigation neatly integrate together. So for me getting a third party car stereo is not an option.

My phone contract ends in 3 weeks. If Apple doesn't have a solution by then I will be giving competing products serious consideration.

Let Me categorically state that this is purely an apple problem. Purely an iOS 8 problem. Not Toyota/lexus.

I drive a Lexus IS220 with the Mark Levinson sound system and DVD & Bluetooth. I have an iPhone five on iOS 7. As an iPhone 5s on iOS 8 .1 .2.

The iPhone five and iOS seven makes perfect calls from Siri. And no termination by network. The iOS 8 as we all know has huge problems with SiriBluetooth with Toyota/Lexus?

would this evidence be enough to convince Apple it's their problem and any suggestions on how to go about sorting this out?

Obviously some of you have not read my earlier post. I filed an official bug with Apple and got the following response:

*********

This is actually the car kit's fault. The car kit is erroneously sending a 'hangup' event that in iOS 7 occurred in between the end of the Siri session and before the real call is dialed, but timing changed in iOS 8 and the hangup event comes when the real call is dialing.

Our timing change to more closely mimic what happened in iOS 7 is in iOS 8.2 and beyond. This may still fail in some scenarios (some Toyotas actually send TWO hangup events), but we cannot solve that without breaking other car kits.

*********

So you folks can rail against Apple, but the truth is that it sounds like Toyota is not playing kosher, and it happened to work with iOS 7. It will be fixed in 8.2.

And works on every other smartphone and plain cell phone for the past 7 years. You are listening to one persons nonsense. Bluetooth is a loose standard but a standard nonetheless so that it should connect with every Bluetooth device the same way.

This is Apple- pure and simple. No need to confuse the issue unless you do a thorough study of Bluetooth protocols and update since it's inception.

It may (or may not) be a timing issue but it's certainly Apple's responsibility to figure out the solution and resolve.

I hope you are correct. I don't know who you specifically refer to- their name and exact position with Apple. A specific developer? Tech support person? Someone writing code for 8.2? What is their contact info? Yes- I have read your previous entries with vague specificity as to exactly who you refer to and their level of knowledge.

I cannot find anything officially published by Apple on this subject. There are many people inconvenienced and distracted while driving due to this "glitch".

No- It's not the "end of the world". Unless someone who relies on their phone for urgent matters has an accident and gets killed fumbling with their phone not being able to use voice dial, which preceded Siri, and has worked on every Apple phone since the iPhone was introduced. (Some issues with 4S were resolved quickly)

It's a significant annoyance for me and I would like substantiation when someone posts defense of Apple's behavior in this matter, claiming it's an Apple insider response.

And all of us have been more than patient after many people like me have spent hundreds $$ upgrading to an iPhone 6 that doesn't perform one of the primary telephony features of a "smartphone" properly- Bluetooth voice dial. And if you turn off Siri, the underlying voice dial function does not work as well.

I would appreciate your assurances if the sources providing your info weren't unnamed or unpublished. Otherwise, there should be no complacency on the part of those affected to write to "leadership@apple.com" to express their dissatisfaction or continue to post at the least.

It was a response to a bug filed at bugreport.apple.com. None of the responses have a name attached to them.

Dont fumble and call in the car and nobody will be killed.

I am the first to criticize Apple's shoddy software QA but in this case it smells more like a Toyota issue that luckily worked before, with Apple treading a fine line between getting Toyota to work and breaking Siri calls in other cars.

Agreed. He completely doesn't get it. 75% of my calls are placed using hands free SIRI from my car. I'm losing money because Apple provided an operating system upgrade that doesn't work with the Prius without disclosing this might happen. Then they refuse to allow us to revert to iOS 7. If I lose just one customer because I haven't been resposive in returning calls it will pay for couple of iPhone 6s and a couple of Androids both - and then some. This isn't about the religion of which mobil OS is better - its about being able place calls to stay in touch with our customers.

Nathan, I read your post but sorry, I don't buy it. I have a 2008 Prius. The Siri/Bluetooth works with other phones (e.g., Samsung), and it works with earlier iOS versions. Also, I prefer that Toyota focuses on fixing CARS, not Bluetooth/Apple compatibility that rightfully belongs to Apple.

So yes, I too will be switching to Android if a fix is not forthcoming by the end of the month, when I am eligible for an upgrade at Verizon....
