How do you turn off frequently visited sites in safari for iOS8

I have thr new iOS 8 running on a iPad Mini with Retina Display and iPhone 4s in Safari it has this New feature frequently visited sites. I don't like this and while I can delete them off each device but they keep on coming back.

I have checked the Safari and general settings in the settings app but nothing, cannot find anything on apple support or when I do a google search.

Any ideas?

I Like my top sites but dislike this new view.

@simoon56 - Here are my settings to prevent "frequently visited".

Settings>Safari>Block Pop Ups=ON Do Not Track=ON, Block Cookies =Allow from websites I visit, Fraudulent Website Warning=ON

in Advanceded, JavaScript is ON (Green)

IMPORTANT!!! After setting all of these, go back and Clear History and Website Data.😉

I've been using these settings on both devices and haven't had a problem since.

@Tori_89 setting "do not track" to off position allows you to be tracked. Not sure why yours might be doing the opposite.

Assume this isn't gonna be possible without a jailbreak or if we are lucky, an app. you guys clearing your history does just what it says. Removes history, cookies, and clears the cache.

your kidding yourselves if you think that somehow "turns it off".

it is a sure fire way to "reset" the counter persay. And if you have several it's probably easier than individually deleting them all. Either way the "feature" isn't very consistent. I visited a site today, Pinterest. Never browsed it before, ever. After viewing about a half dozen pictures POOF Pinterest under frequently visited.... Really Apple? Really?

so to reiterate - it's not possible and clearing your history does just that, clears your history - nothing else.

I'm just gonna say what nobody seems to have the courage to say. Some of my frequently visited sites are **** sites. And having naked pictures show up on my screen in the middle of using my phone for non-**** purposes - like at work or on the train - is jolting. I don't want this crap to show up just for opening safari, but I also don't want to have to clear my history, cookies, etc. in order to make it go away.

there has to be an actual setting that will get rid of it. Or apple should create one. Anybody who has ever used the internet for **** (read: just about everybody) would know that this was a stupid idea.

I accidently found out a particular thing that can be done with a frequently visited icon that pops up there. First I was trying to see if holding down the icon brought up some menu ... and I didn't see that it did, but I accidently slid my finder over into the favorites area and the icon shifted over into that position ... instead of the frequently-visited position. And then, it could be deleted from that new position, whereas it couldn't be deleted from the frequently-visited position.

That may be something you could do, instead of clearing out all the cookies and history - if you didn't want to do it, at that particular time.

Well ... when you finish your browsing and you're going on to something else, just double-check in the frequently-visited screen and see if something is there. If it is, just press down on the icon and move it over to the favorites position (which is right above the line, as the line divides the two areas). Then you can press the icon again (once it's in the favorites area) and it can be deleted.

It's a few steps to do that, but you don't have to clear out your cookies at that particular time, if you just want to clear that particular icon out of the "frequently-visited" screen.

@asa1973 - trust me, if I was looking at p o r n on my devices, I'd have no problem admitting it.... I will admit that I do view it - but on my computer screen- much better visuals... 😉 For me, I just find it hideously annoying to have every site I went to suddenly cram up the front of either of my devices😉 But yeah, in your case - I can definitely feel your pain when those sites show up on your devices. Too bad it's not working for you. If you go to page 1 of this thread, I have my actual Safari Settings listed. They haven't failed me since day 1.

Give it time. And goodness brother, use a bit of common sense!

in case that isn't setting off any light bulbs let me be more clear. Let me know next time Apple disguises one setting with a unrelated different name Of which includes compound uses....

this would be a stretch for any company... Let alone Apple...

thats disregarding the fact I have 4 phones of varying models across 2 providers and am unfortunately anal as all **** about the ones that arent even mine. I've been clearing my cookies and history since day one and unless you do it again before their algorithm has decided you have visited a site frequently enough.... It will be back.

dont take my word for it /shrug. But for your own sake - work on that common sense thing 😝

First off, dear Klepp0906, I'm a sister, not a brother 😉 (you assumed, didn't you?)

I have a great deal of common sense. I usually clear my cookies/history daily but was merely showing that there is a way to keep that frequently visited stuff from showing, to help others, is all.

No need for you to question my common sense. I have plenty of it, believe me.

I am quite anal, having OCD 🙂 I was merely trying to help others by doing some trial and error stuff. I clear history on ALL of my macs, too. All 3 of them. And my devices.

I guess I should have mentioned that I decided to "test" this thing out to help a few friends and then saw it here in the threads, too. I didn't think I had to explain it all in detail so that you could come and tell me to work on my common sense.

I was only trying to help others who might not be as stringent as you or I.

After I've had IOS 8 for a month, I will revert to my totally anal ways of clearing things daily...

I like to learn and help others and that's what I was trying to do in this forum.
