iPhone 6 screen easily scratched?

It would be nice to have official information about the glass that is used on iPhone 6. My latest phone before it was iPhone 5, which I had for 2 years, and the screen didn't get a single scratch on it (I am careful with my devices).

After two months, my iPhone 6 has a couple of hairline scratches (small though, and only visible in bright light, such as office lights). Given that I've been even more careful with iPhone 6, it's kind of concerning, especially since I don't know what caused the scratches.

So in scratch resistance, iPhone 6 is inferior to iPhone 5 — or at least some batches of screens are. Having seen the iPhone 6 scratch test videos on YouTube, the ones where they use keys and knives trying to scratch the screen to no avail, I cannot help but wonder if the glass used in production is something other than Gorilla Glass. Or if Apple uses an additional glass supplier besides Corning to meet demand.

That would explain why some (most?) screens don't scratch (Corning's glass) and some screens do (2nd supplier's glass that's not up to Corning's quality).

In the poll that was on this thread, factories C3 and F2 seem to produce most of the phones that have been reported as scratched. My iPhone 6 happens to be from the C3 factory, so it fits the pattern.

I'll see how my phone holds up in the coming months, and will contact Apple after the initial demand for the iPhone calms down a bit. Perhaps Apple will use only Corning's glass when the production volume gets to normal after the holidays (if my theory about two glass suppliers is correct). Of course it could also be that Corning is the only manufactuter, but they have issues at some of their production lines. I know I have an issue with the glass on my iPhone 6 unit.

To be fair to Apple, QC can be a challenge with the tens of millions of units produced, and as long as they don't throw the "user inflicted cosmetic damage" at me, I trust I'll be happy with their customer service. Always have been.

I Had the same problem. I took my phone out after it had been in my pocket by itself and there was a huge scratch from one side to the other, it almost looked like a crack. The Apple store was of no help. I called Apples tech support and they initially talked like I would have to pay for a new screen. Luckily the lady I spoke to also discussed it with a supervisor and they said they would fix it for free. I had the option to mail it in or go to a store. They gave me a reference number and noted it in their system. If you call, make sure they note it in their system. Even with them having a note for the store, the staff were still reluctant to fix it. They ended up giving me a whole new phone in the end because apparently the rep on the phone had written to issue a new one. Hope this helps!!! And if you don't get anywhere, hang up and call until you get the answer you want.

When was your iPhone purchased? And do you have AppleCare+? I've had mine for 2 weeks and I don't have any warranty, can I still get it replaced like you did if I call & stuff? Thanks.

Did you know you can still add AppleCare+? You actually have 30 days from date of purchase to add it.

I've my iphone 6 for two weeks, i have a case but no screen protetcor, but somehow it was scratched big time, its all i look at when i take out my phone. i never used one on my 4s and on my 5 i had it for months before i finally slapped on a ZAGG one but still no scratches before i installed it. This is messed up. I love apple and this is my first issue in a long time. I really dont wanna pay $109 to replace it or use a screen proctor because i love the clarity of the 6 and it shouldnt need to be covered up. I do know that the ZAGG HD protectors fill in this scratches when you put it on but not GLASS, which happens to be the one i like the most.

I bought the zagg glass for my 6 after mine scratched. I was tired of always feeling the gouge with my finger. It does impact the screen clarity at certain angles but it feels really nice. My wife tried the hd on her plus and we didn't like so she also got the glass. However it didnt protect from an impact.

I am ready to change my screen. Will go to the Apple store and see if they can changed it for free or they can give me my 950 bucks back. I owned HTC for 2 years and a Samsung S III for 3 years, they been everywhere.. Not one scratch on the screen. So I asked, why? They said that these phones comes with something called Gorilla Glass.. So I asked and what's the iPhone screen made from, they said Plastic.. Is that right Mr Apple Head?

iPhone screen is glass not plastic.

I am very careful with my phone and only 2 days after receiving it, the glass was scratched. If the wind blows too hard it seems the glass will scratch.. Not very happy Apple. Please address this before I sell this thing and go to Samsung!!

So It's true then, it's made from a very very very very cheap Glass... by them 12, 13 years old Chinese kids.. Interesting!!!

It seems that Apple products are truly made for light weight gentle touch humans....Trying to be nice in here 🙂

May take mine back also, this is a crock I had to spend money on a screen protector.

Absolutely I have AppleCare+. I add AppleCare+ to every new iDevice the day I get them. I wouldn't be without AppleCare+

I also finally put a screen protector on my iPhone 6 today. I still didn't have any scratches, but better safe than sorry. I had tried Zagg Glass, but after 7 failed installations (none of them would seal completely around the edges, so they looked awful), I finally got a wet film install done with Ghost Armor. I'm actually very surprised how good the Ghost Armor looks, or really doesn't look. If you look at my phone, you can't really see there's anything there. Here's a picture:

If you have applecare just get a new device every few months to get a fresh screen. Sounds like a good idea to me

Sounds like an expensive terrible idea to me. My phone is perfect, has zero issues, so why would I get a new phone? Besides, the terms of AppleCare+ only gives you a replacement twice during the two years of the coverage at $79/replacement.
