iPhone 6 screen easily scratched?

Ahem and now now now. Don't relegate us old geezers to the bin of poor eye-sighted and too feeble to notice scratches on our screens, even hairline scratches. Most of us "older than 30-somethings" (some much older) have regular eye examinations and even wear these new-fangled contraptions called contact lenses or even, gasp, eye glasses. So, many of us are more than capable of seeing even hairline scratches on our iPhone screens. LOL (all said, tongue in cheek!)

That said, I have been on quite the screen protector odyssy. After reading this thread, I decided to get a screen protector for my two iPhone 6's, neither of which have yet to get any scratches. I started with Zagg Glass, but the OCD in me didn't like how it didn't seal all around the edges on just my black faced phone. The white one looks terrific. Then I got Body Armor installed. Hated it. Don't like the rubbery feel and the orange peel look. Then I got the Apple sold Power Support Anti-Glare protector. It fit OK and even felt pretty normal, but I didn't like how the Anti-Glare protector makes pictures look. So for the last several weeks, my phone had been naked (except of course it's in a hard shell case).

Then I was with a friend who has Zagg Glass on his iPhone 6. We were running late and he took his phone out while walking quickly and he dropped his phone on hard concrete. I could feel his pain as he bent down to pick up his phone. The Zagg glass was shattered. BUT and this is a big BUT, the iPhone screen underneath, was completely utterly 100% fine. Not a scratch, nor hint of break. That was enough for me. I went right back and had Zagg Glass installed again and it's staying on this time.

I know some of you resent putting anything on your precious iPhone Screen. I think the protection, not just from scratches, but from possible breakage from an accidental drop, more than makes up for any reason not to use a screen protector. After all, even screens that are 100% free of scratches can most definitely break if the phone is dropped on a hard surface. To me, the trade off is more than worth it.

Based on the reports in this thread and several other boards (not to mention the Wired Review), I got the iPhone 6, walked across the mall straight to Best Buy and had them install the Zagg tempered glass screen protector. I have the space grey 64 Gb and am using a Cygnett Workmate case. The Zagg is just fine. It doesn't go all the way to the edge of the screen or the case, but it looks ok to me - the case is fairly noticeable. And using the Zagg with the touch screen is great. It beats the hairline scratches and the protection is worth it.

+1 If anything Zagg Glass feels smoother than the actual iPhone 6 screen. At least to my fingers it does.

I'm sure that if you check the part below the home button or any part of the screen the protector does not cover you might notice some very small marks. These are on the coating; I did not say they are on the actual glass.

Does anyone know if applying oleophobic coating on these marks will make them go away?

Not sure if that would get rid of the scratches. What you can do is remove the coating manually (through abrasion) and reapply it. That should get rid of the scratch. That's still a laborsome task though. If you do try to just add more coating, let us know, it's also a possible solution.

I can assure you there are NO marks, or hairline scratches below where the screen protector does not cover. None. Zip. Nadda.

I do agree however, that for those who have scratches, it's not the glass that has scratched. It is the Oleophobic coating. Whether it can be reapplied or who can reapply this coating, I have no idea.

iFixIt has tutorials on applying the coating. Anyone can apply it, doens't require a professional. The qustion wasn't if the coating can be applied, it can already be applied (if you find coating to apply on Amazon or something). The question is whether or not it'll get rid of the scratches. That one, I'm not sure about. In theory, it could.

I guess someone who has scratches may want to try and report back. If it works, it would help those who are upset about the scratches on the coating.

The OCD in me is instructing me to try this. The mark that I have is honestly not seen unless very close inspection and it's covered with a sticker but the little OCD voice in me is like "it's there". It's sad. I don't know how to get rid of this.

If you are successful and you apply a new coating, which makes your OCD happy, just think of the joy you may give to others!

And if I'm not and my phone breaks because I couldn't sit my *** down think of the joy I may give Apple when I have to buy an iPhone full price again.

I'm in Greece anyway and the kit cannot be found in Europe, I already searched.

An application of a thin layer of oleophobic coating really can't make the screen worse. If anything does go wrong, the cost of replacement is the same (assuming you're outside the 14 day return period): 109 dollars for the iPhone 6 and 129 for the iPhone 6 Plus (it'll be an out-of-warranty screen replacement). They should treat it like a scratched screen or shattered one. Something happened to the screen that caused it to become damaged. Due to the way the screen is fused together, they can't use any part of it either way.

I cannot find the kit in Europe.

Maybe I will try car wax. Put some on it on a piece of ear cotton and touch the mark with it.
