I suspect that Apple's love of secrecy means that few of their latest items while in development ever get tested or even handled, by "real" people in real "about-town" situations. So in the past we have had the aerial problems with the then new iPhone 4 - "You're holding it wrong" said Steve Jobs apparently - now he might have said "You're putting it in the wrong pocket" !

I can see dozens of Chinese case makers frantically working on building solid, non-bendable iPhone 6+ cases - out in a few weeks max.

So if Sir Jonathan Ive ever sees this post - get a bunch of John/Jane Does in for the Apple Watch and make sure there no design quirks or potential usage problems likely to stay un-noticed - and thus avoid any further media frenzies.

To have one problem may be regarded as a misfortune; to have two will look like carelessness. (after O.F.O'F W. Wilde)

According to Forbes, the bending problem is real and subsequent tests show other phones don't experience it as much. http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2014/09/24/iphone-6-plus-bendgate/

All Forbes appears to be doing is reporting on a video that went viral and responses from other tech sites. They provide no particularly new information.

The video of the gentleman bending his iPhone 6 Plus with ease, should not be a consideration, nor should the CNN journalist who had difficulty bending it. The questions everyone should be asking are as follows:

  1. Is the structural integrity of the iPhone 6+ compromised when subjected to a "reasonable" amount of prolonged everyday stress, or is this really a case of people exposing their phones to prolonged careless amounts of stress (such as sitting on your phone in the back pocket)?
  2. What constitutes a "reasonable" amount of prolonged everyday stress to you?
  3. If the iPhone 6+ bends with what you consider to be a "reasonable" amount of prolonged stress, are you willing to take the necessary precautions or changes to your everyday lifestyle to properly care for your device?
  4. What does Apple consider a "reasonable" amount of prolonged everyday stress, and will a bend in the frame be covered under any warranty or return from your retailer or carrier?

Based on a number of reports online, the phone being placed in front pocket with a few hours of exposure to everyday stress, can cause the 6 Plus to bend; therefore, a video of someone trying to forcefully bend the phone in an instant, does not demonstrate a "reasonable" amount of prolonged stress. Hence, the videos referenced above, are inconclusive in that regard.

What I consider to be a reasonable amount of stress in an everyday situation are as follows:

  1. Going for a long drive, and your phone presses firmly against your thigh, while still in your pocket.
  2. Virtually any situation for which the phone is in your pocket, and you may be sitting/standing for a prolonged amount of time, and the iPhone 6+ is pressed firmly against your thigh.
  3. The 6 Plus has a bit of a tight fit in your pocket, combined with you being overweight; therefore the phone is firmly pressed against the thigh. (I'm not overweight, but most of America is)
  4. Casually, laying down on the couch, or bed with the phone in your pocket. (I don't typically do this or find it comfortable, but it has happened from time to time)
  5. Wearing any pair of pants/jeans you want, with the phone in your pocket. (I'm not referring to the mini "drug dealer" sub-pocket found in many jeans)

Some may consider all of these to be care-free situations, and I have to agree with that to a degree, but I don't consider them unreasonable. I've exposed my 4S to all of these situations with only a screen protector, and it's mint. I believe these are common lifestyle situations that provide a reasonable amount of prolonged stress for which the durability of any phone should be able to withstand. You shouldn't have to confirm to your device; it's supposed to fit your everyday lifestyle without compromise.

I've heard someone mention, "Gentle Care" should be taken with the iPhone 6 Plus. IMHO, Gentle Care=Fragile, Handle with care. I believe a sensible amount of care should be taken with any phone, but worrying about whether my next pair of pants will bend my phone is not sensible or practical.

Some are saying, they no longer store their phones in the pocket, but you may not always be in a situation, where taking your giant phone in a public, is a good idea. The holstering alternative is another band-aid solution, which forces you to share with the world that you're carrying a giant iPhone 6 Plus.

To be fair, it's too early to draw any conclusions as my questions from the first paragraph, have not been answered to any degree of absolute certainty. It's speculative at this point with too many unknowns; it's difficult to assess what conditions these iPhones are truly being subjected to. However, completely dismissing the possibility that this phone can easily bend with reasonable everyday prolonged stress, would be also be premature- unless you've actually purchased the phone, and subjected it to prolonged stresses that you consider reasonable, resulting in no compromise to the structural integrity.

The bottom line: If you're considering the iPhone 6 Plus, and durability is a concern, the best way to find out is to actually purchase the iPhone 6 Plus, and then answer the first three questions; however, the risks may be whether your retailer or carrier will accept the return if it bends, and what restocking fees you may be subjected to. I would find out about those risks, prior to purchase.
