I had a brand new iPhone 6, white, 64GB, and the same thing happened to me. Activated it on 26-Dec-2014, and it broke on 29-Dec-2014.

Making a phone call, you couldn't hear anything on the earpiece and they can't hear you on the mic. Switch to speakerphone, and you can hear them, but they can't hear you. Bluetooth worked fine.

Playing music, the sound came out the speaker. Plug in headphones, nothing changes, sound still comes out the speaker. Didn't do any better with Apple headphones. Cleaned out the earphone hole with an air compressor, no difference.

Took it to Apple, they tried "Reset All Settings", but it didn't help. Gave me a replacement immediately, no trouble. Thank you Apple for taking care of this so promptly and professionally! I hope this next one is better.

BTW, we also got another iPhone 6 and an iPhone 6 plus at the same time, and the other 2 are still working fine so far.

Mine said "headphones" when I toggled the volume button on the display and sure enough I blasted it with compressed air and "Bingo" it fixed it. Brilliant

I would suggest this to anyone having this problem first, could be just something caught in the headphone jack, easy fix, then read-on and hopefully you get answers. That's for the tip!!!!!!!!! Love the internet community and love/hate these fu...ing phones.......

All,

It ***** but I can confirm that if you have an issue with the speaker phone you may want to first check when clicking the volume adjust that it says headphones. If so, you'll need to jam your head phone jack in there about 10x and all should be good.

Called Apple and they too recommended the above. Thanks to smjdel who recommended this. Worked like a charm.

My iPhone 6 had this same problem after I had it in my pocket while shoveling snow. It turns out there was water and condensation in the headphone speaker, and that was what was causing the phone to think there were headphones in. After putting in and pulling out the headphones I saw water droplets that were coming out, and soon the problem was fixed! 🙂

I was having the same issue. In my case, I thought I'd be savvy and use the screen protector/ plastic that came with the phone instead of buying a new screen protector. That plastic slip covers the speaker at the top of the phone making calls very quiet! So my advice to you is to make sure you don't have a piece of plastic covering the speaker at the top by the front camera!

Guess what I found a solution. It worked everytime. Yet, it still left a question mark. Should I return and get a new one? I think I should because it seems like a software issue and it may be specific to my iPhone 6. Seems like a legit reason to make a return!!

Here is the solution:

When you plug in the headphones volume mode changes to headphones and sticks to it. Even after the headphones are unplugged it still remains to be the volume for headphones.

But when the headphones are not plugged, if you pull the headphones volume down to zero volume, phone registers the fact that the earphones are not plugged in and switches back to speaker volume. Viola!! problem solved but it keeps happening so it is f'd up!!

Regardless, the issue may have to do with moisture..something to keep in mind, so drying out the phone by a hair blower or something might also be the answer.

I experineced the same issue this morning with my iPhone 6 64GB. I could not hear a phonecall without having the loudspeaker enabled.

When I increased the volume, the 'Headphones' symbol appeared but the ringer symbol did not.

I eventually got my ear speaker working again by using the original Apple earphones.

I repeatedly plugged them in and out of the earphone jack while simultaneously having the music app playing in the background and toggling the 'Ringer Volume' slider, up and down, in the Settings--> Sounds option.

The sound then started to play through the loudspeaker.

I then checked that the earphones were unplugged and I toggled the volume buttons on the side of the phone. They were now controlling the ringer volume and my ear phone speaker is now working again.

I hope this helps!

I bought a iphone 6 unlocked in US and I got it to India. When I opened, the ear piece receiver was not working. I have to take calls through head phones or Speaker phone and I took it to US and when Genius Bar guy checked with the US SIM, it worked. They said they can't replace as every thing is working fine.

I brought back to India and again the same problem - the earpiece didn't work. I tried with Tata Docomo SIM and Airtel SIM and it is the same problem.

I upgraded to latest 8.1.3 - same problem.

I reset the whole phone - same problem.

I reset only the Network Setting - the ear piece started to work.

I had this problem today! I can't think of anything that would've caused this issue other than it being something to do with the iPhone updates or whatnot.

I tried all steps listed here: clean with q-tip, blowing/sucking on headphones port, plugging headphones in and out, restarting iPhone. All of which failed.

However, the one tip that did manage to get my speakers working again was hooking my iPhone to a bluetooth speaker and then turning off the bluetooth. It immediately transferred the sound back to my iPhone speakers and haven't had any issues since.
