iPad Air since iOS 8: Apps not updating and downloading no longer possible. Fix?

This problem only really started in the past couple days. I can no longer update apps, cannot download books from the store in the books app and cannot download newspapers in my newsstand. Also, my Adobe reader for iPad open but shows a blank page for 15 seconds before closing and returning to my iPad home screen.

Previous to this, the first few days of iOS 8 did not give me problems, though I had not yet tested all of the above items but apps updated easily for first few days (until 22 sept). Is there a fix?

(A) Try reset iPad

Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

Note: Data will not be affected.

(B) Try reset all settings

Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings

Note: Data will not be affected but settings for Wi-Fi, FaceTime, Message, Home Sharing will be reset

But I don't have the WSJ app - not everyone in the world does! On my iPad the problem is the podcasts app - which is an apple app. I've no idea which one is causing the problem on the phone but something is - I'm fed up with deleting apps and resetting things.

Stop telling me its the WSJ app - I don't have that one!!!!!

Go yell at someone else. Nobody here works for you.

AAfter downgrading to 7.1.2, all was perfect.......until I tried downloading a movie. Now my videos app does not open at all and the movies I tried downloading say "error download. Tap to retry" in iTunes Store on my iPad.

note: my iPhone 6 and my iMac and iTunes on iMac have n. Issues whatsoever.

no no idea why videos do not open and tried the mute/home button reset, tried shutting down and restarting, and even hooked up via cable to my imac and synced hoping would solve but nothing.

WSJ app may be just one of many causes for the "hanging" issue. Based on my experience I think that a magazine issue download can also cause the problem. Consumer Report app also failed on a download. I deleted it ansvWSJ app, turned iPad off and when restarted it worked. Then reloaded the two deleted apps. WSJ now works fine. CR still can not download current magazine. I did have one time when I thought that the hanging problem was back, but it was related to a wifi bug. my router has both 2.4ghz and 5.0ghz connections. iOS 8.0.2 will drop connection at 5.0. Since I set my connection to 2.4ghz I have had no further problems. Hope that I have not just jinxed myself.

I am having the same issue with my new iPad mini. After downloading 8.02, I can't download or update. On Thursday I went to the Genius Bar on West 67th St. in NYC. The guy did a complete restore at which time I had to get everything back from the cloud. This worked briefly and then froze. Most of my apps are still in "waiting" mode and, of course, updates are not working. I tried syncing via my computer. No good. I went back to another Genius Bar yesterday. The genius said there was nothing to be done and just wait until the next download update. He offered to give me a new mini with an earlier verson of ios but said I would probably not be able to get all my data back from the cloud. I figured I better wait since every time the problem is "fixed" it becomes worse. I am very frustrated and annoyed. This is not supposed to happen with Apple products.

I am having the exact same problem and just submitted a new discussion. I'm new to this support and just found the discussion group. I opened a chat support ticket with Apple and was told to restore the device to new, check an app, and then restore from back up. I did start fresh and manually restored only the apps I use frequently. The SF Chronicle app wouldn't even load, The NY Times app is fine. I tried to update one app manually and it isn't working yet again.

This upgrade is working fine on ,my iPhone 6 + but I still can't get it to work on my iPad Air. Avery frustrating upgrade to 8.0.2.

This thread seems to contain more than 1 problem. However, on my iPad Air with iOS 8 and 8.0.2, app updating would freeze in waiting, new apps could not be downloaded, and magazines would not download in Newsstand. Rebooted numerous times with no improvement. Restored iPad with iTunes and it worked temporarily, but eventually had the same problem. Based on recommendations in this thread, deleted the WSJ app and then rebooted. Everything updated and downloaded fine after that. Reinstalled the WSJ app and the same problem recurred, only fixed by deleting the WSJ app again and rebooting. Sent an email to WSJ support. Only got a generic reply. They had suggested to someone else on this thread to reset the content in the app. This did nothing other than delete all of my saved articles.

I usually prefer iCabMobile to Safari (I like to queue up 5 or 6 articles each in their own tabs by just tapping on the links). At any rate, the new version just came out and, of course, I couldn't load it on my iPad. So I deleted the apps in the App store update queue. Then rebooted. This usually does it.

But not this time.

So, on a hunch, I deleted the WSJ app and rebooted. That worked. I reinstalled the WSJ app and that is working.

Because some of you do not have the WSJ app, my guess is that this may not be the source of the bug. But the WSJ app is falling into it. One theory is that the problem is some kind of lock that gets set whenever downloading items to the iPad. They generally only allow us to download a single thing at one time. This suggests there must be a software lock that enforces this. One possibility is that some situation prevents that lock from freeing when a download finishes.

So.

If you're having this problem, you might look at anything you're downloading. It could be a magazine, automatic app or music downloads. Anything like that.

And I would caution you that just because a theory like this one sounds plausible, it still does not guarantee that it's our problem. It may still be something entirely different. But if we all keep posting our experiences we may just figure it out.

By the way, I just noticed that the App store app itself was just updated. If we're really lucky, this may solve our problems!
