iPad Air since iOS 8: Apps not updating and downloading no longer possible. Fix?

This problem only really started in the past couple days. I can no longer update apps, cannot download books from the store in the books app and cannot download newspapers in my newsstand. Also, my Adobe reader for iPad open but shows a blank page for 15 seconds before closing and returning to my iPad home screen.

Previous to this, the first few days of iOS 8 did not give me problems, though I had not yet tested all of the above items but apps updated easily for first few days (until 22 sept). Is there a fix?

(A) Try reset iPad

Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

Note: Data will not be affected.

(B) Try reset all settings

Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings

Note: Data will not be affected but settings for Wi-Fi, FaceTime, Message, Home Sharing will be reset

I Tried that - I deketed most of the 15 back logged apps but still the apps would not load. So I can't use many of my essential apps. iOS 8 on iPad Air my other apps are stalled on upgrade so I can't access many of my apps which refuse to upgrade. Did many resets and reboots but no can do. Anyone else experiencing trouble with app upgrades with newest iOS? Apple solution is to restore ipad to factory settings - no way!

Unfortunately, almost all doesn't seem to do anything.

If this trick works, you need to delete ALL of the stalled apps. I first touch the frozen progress circle until each of the stalled apps says "Update".

Then delete them all in the normal way.

Then reboot.

Because Apple keeps a list of all the apps you have downloaded, it is relatively easy to reinstall all of the deleted apps.

This has worked three times for me. On the fourth I also had to delete WSJ app, then reboot, then reinstall.

Be aware that these steps work for some people but not for others. There may well be more than one bug at play here.

Just spent two days with some very helpful apple technicians. Did all the router re-starting , reset network settings etc and nothing worked. . Went out to a coffee shop yesterday to prove to myself that it was not my home wifi router... Finally this morning one of their reps called and said that an engineer had asked if i had the WSJ app on my iPad. I did. we deleted it, turned the "background app refresh off" and then rebooted the iPad . All is working as normal. I suggest you try that if you you have the WSJ app.

I think that turning off background app refresh was overkill in case some other app had the same "problems" as the WSJ app- but i'm using the background refresh sparingly on an app by app bases.. I am reading the WSJ on safari browser until WSJ/Apple figures out the problem. .

They may not be perfect, but couldn't be more please about how the apple people responded and their doggedness in doing additional research and bothered to call back with additional data. . They did indicate a trend was forming and they would have to contact the WSJ folks.

Try that with another tablet's support.... Just saying!

First thing to do is to stop automatic download if you have it. That will fix it so that you have to choose each download to do, manually. I always do that anyway, because sometimes the developer has some notes for you not updating for a particular model or he mentions some particular problem or he gives a warning about the update. It's good practice to never automatically download.

Then secondly, restart your device. Do the home and power button restart. You can actually do the power button restart too, if you want.

When it comes back up again, then choose no more than two apps to download at a time. I know it takes a bit longer that way and it's more manual interaction, but I think there is some glitch to too many apps downloading at once. That's my observation, so keep it at no more than two apps at a time, maybe three.

Try that and see how it works.

Hi,

First of all, sorry for my poor English speaking..

Since my last messages & Like i already exposed, the Issue come back even any tricks apply on Device.

Like all all of, i reboot x times already, I restore ( Factory ) x times already , delete & re_install all my app's already... the Device allow me to Update my apps & download any...for couples of hours ( maybe 24H don't no...the exact time n but around that... ), then, the problem come back again = no download & update is possible on the App Store ( the circle turn indefinitedly without downloading )....

I read with attention the last 2 pages messages, many of you think resolving this issue by simply removing the WSJ app, unfortunately it's not....even you got the hand on the App Store today ! Please come back tell us if in couples of days it's working again !

We have not other choice then to wait for an IOS Update in the case for sure Apple resolve that issue, if not....stay the USB Cable & Itunes connection for updating app !

Regards,

Cyril

I just spoke to Apple support for the fact that my videos app does not open anymore on my iPad Air

(background: I am the originator of this thread and after downloading iOS 8 and having issues already discussed here after 5 flawless initial days on iOS 8, I downgraded to iOS 7.1.2 to avoid all these hassles and no issues until I downloaded a couple movies a week later and the downloads did not work then the videos app with all my movies would no longer even open)

their innovative solution was to do a complete restore, which would then require me to install iOS 8.0.2, which, given the discussions on here, is not an optimal solution because it seems even without the WSJ app, which I deleted at the beginning of hearing that could be the issue, the problem persists even if all works great for a few hours or a day after a restoration.

I Then asked if they had any record of this issue with iOS 8 and the iPads and he checked and said no. (Exasperation sets in that even after all these people calling apple as indicated on hubris thread, they still have no record of the problem).

hence, I have no idea if we are going to get a resolution or not but I am seriously considering going against my better judgement and doing a restore to put iOS 8.0.2 on my device and take my chances.

has anyone here had a resolution that works longer than one week with iOS 8? There are many of us that do not even have the WSJ app so it has to be more than just that.

A quick reply to your latest post As I've perhaps already shared my experience within this thread, the quick fix for me was and has been till now ( keep my fingers crossed ! ) to download and install 8.0.2 via iTunes. Since then everything seemed to work fine ie back to normal albeit at slightly slowe pace under the same home wifi. Don't have WSJ app though but quite a few other papers and other apps ( some 80 I wolud say. Cheers, Piero

JDFMRS you asked if anyone has found something that has worked for more than a week. The solution I used continues to work for me.

1) Delete the apps that were hung

2) sign out of iTunes and iCloud on the iPad

3) Delete the apps from iTunes

4) Connect ipad to mac (in my case i use a mac)

5) download apps to mac and install via sync to iPad.

6) i have disabled automatic downloads

I have had zero problems for over a week and just (two minutes ago) downloaded 7 updates and

I encountered a similar issue a couple of years ago on an iPad. As best I can explain, iTunes/iCloud gets stuck in an infinite loop before it begins the download. you have to clear out the queue from iTunes and iCloud which is why i deleted apps on the iPad AND iTunes, and signed out of iTunes and iCloud.

The WSJ solution worked for me. I did notice that it was the last app to successfully update before my problem started. I wonder if there aren't other apps that will potentially do the same thing as they are released. If I experience the problem again, I'll try and delete the last updated app and see if that works.

Oct 8, 2014 5:42 PM in response to JDFMRS

I Did the 8.0.2 restore and the manually added the apps I use the most. I also did not restore WSJ. So far ( 5dayd) all is ok and apps are updating automatically. I will add other less used apps one by one and see what happens. This was after I spoke with Apple support. I too asked if anyone else had called about this issue and was also told no. Unfortunately I couldn't retain a copy of the text support by chat. I told them they should look at the support discussions as it is a big issue.

WIth itch the new iPad releases on the 16th and the fact that they are simultaneously working on 8.1, 8.2 and 8.3, one can only hope this issue will be resolved. I did not have this issue on my A7 mini or my newest iPhone 6+.

Hope this helps but my fingers are still crossed.

Ok, for an update......

i Did the full restore as a new iPad last night (well, throughout the night as downloading seemed to take an incredibly long time). This of course meant that I had to install iOS 8.0.2.

It has only been a few hours but so far, after having done all the reinstall action of my apps via iTunes and then the subsequent updates to them, all seems to work except for some odd reason, some of the movies I wanted to sync between my iTunes and my ipad did not happen (4 of 8 added, including recent purchases but slightly older and very old purchases had a mix of some downlorded and others did not) and it gave no reason but I just happened to look and saw that only half the movies downloaded. However, at least the videos app works now (did not work before the restore).

I Did not reinstall my WSJ app but my other newsstand apps are working fine (one French newspaper, one English newspaper) and so far, I have not come across any other issues. I will hold my breath and see how it goes, especially once I decide to try downloading something new like a movie purchase from iTunes or a new app of some sort. I will post to keep you up to date what happens.

that said, the videos app glitch that I seem to still have is annoying. Anyone else tried adding other videos to your iPad that you have already had on itunes? Was it 100% smooth?
