iPad Air since iOS 8: Apps not updating and downloading no longer possible. Fix?

This problem only really started in the past couple days. I can no longer update apps, cannot download books from the store in the books app and cannot download newspapers in my newsstand. Also, my Adobe reader for iPad open but shows a blank page for 15 seconds before closing and returning to my iPad home screen.

Previous to this, the first few days of iOS 8 did not give me problems, though I had not yet tested all of the above items but apps updated easily for first few days (until 22 sept). Is there a fix?

(A) Try reset iPad

Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

Note: Data will not be affected.

(B) Try reset all settings

Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings

Note: Data will not be affected but settings for Wi-Fi, FaceTime, Message, Home Sharing will be reset

My results:

I run an iPad 4 w 32gb. I upgraded to to iOS 8 and it hung up. I did a complete wipe and reloaded iOS 8, which then went fine. I then had to by hand add all my old apps (ie, nothing scnc'd naturally like it usually does w a new Apple product). The problems, as I posted before, happened after loading WSJ app. Some apps after that never loaded or never completely loaded. I deleted all the unloaded apps, deleted WSJ (which had been buggy anyway), loaded all apps I needed, then went back and loaded WSJ.

I'd say so far, so good. iPad absolutely has some lag issues and some keyboarding functionality issues, but it works and I can read wsj, nyt, Al Jazeera, economist, etc. PicsArt is working, Instagram integration works again.

I look forward to the iteration of 8.0.2

I Did a full factory reset and restore. Then, since of course it said my backup had problems, I just synced with iTunes to get my apps back then had to re-arrange them again into the way I wanted.

i Am now on the latest iOS 8.0.2 and (fingers crossed) all seems to be ok so far. Will see. I just bought some stuff on iTunes store and when I get home later and am on wifi, it will download so will see if I have any problems. For the moment, everything is working perfectly, including Evernote.

Was unable to download updates and some apps were not working at all. After reading through many of the posts listed here I reset my AppleID password on my MACBook and iPad Air. All seems to be working now. Logged into my iCloud account via safari and reset password. Performed the same via iCloud account on the iPad. After logging out and back in on the iPad all worked well. You will be asked to log back in with the new password for FaceTime, iMessage, and a few other Apple apps.q

I had the same problem with my iPad Air. The update to 8.0.2 momentarily fixed the problem, but after a few days, the apps no longer updated themselves. After reading this thread, I noticed the suggestion to remove the Wall Street Journal Newstand App: it did the trick. I removed the WSJ app, rebooted the iPad, and re-installed the WSJ app. So far, so good. Hopefully, iOS 8.1 will solve the problem for good.

It may not be the Wall Street Journal app since many people that do not have that app are having this trouble. It is more likely that that the WSJ app falls afoul of an obscure Apple bug that more than one app can trigger. And I don't believe it's all WSJ app users, so it must be that plus something else specific to us. Maybe a common setting of some kind.

I did an online chat with the Wall Street Journal people today. I got quickly bumped up to second level support and that guy told me they were aware of this problem and were working it. While he made no promises, he was hoping a new version of the WSJ app might get released this week.

My suspicion is still that the problem has these components:

  1. It is an iOS 8 issue and not a problem with specific apps (since more than one app seems to trigger this).
  2. It probably involves specific iOS settings we share (otherwise all WSJ app users would have this and they don't seem to).
  3. The bug is triggered by an app like the WSJ app that downloads content.

Even if this is an Apple bug, app writers may still be able to get around this without Apple involvement. It may be a simple as manually resetting a flag after their content is downloaded that should have be reset automagically.

Be aware that this is all guessing and none of it may be true.

The current workaround is to laboriously figure out which app is causing the problem. Then the solution is to delete that app, then reboot. After that you should be golden for about a week.

As soon as I reboot I immediately re-download the WSJ app, and I'm still good for about a week.

I'm wondering whether you've set the restriction password to change apps on your iPad or not. Check Restriction passcode is enabled or not: tap Settings > General > Restrictions. Making sure it's disabled. Otherwise, you should disable it manually. After then, try to update your apps.

As for the Adobe Reader issue, have you updated it to the latest version? You're suppose to update it to the latest version, ensuring it's fully compatible with the latest iOS 8 on your iPad.
