Double/Echo Email Notification Sound (iPhone 6 Plus and iOS 8)

I have iCloud push email on my iPhone 6 Plus. When I get an email notification the sound seems to 'echo'. Another way to explain how it sounds is it sounds just like when I get a notification and my iPad and iPhone are right next to each other and both notifications come in at once. It did not do it with any of my past iPhones.

Here are the steps I've taken to isolate the problem.

  1. Going into mail.app in Notifications and turning off "allow notifications" will turn off all visual notifications, but still allow audio notifications (no doubling of audio notifications)
  2. Turning off just "notification sound" by choosing "none" for each account will result in no audio notifications at all.
  3. Doing a "Reset All Settings" does not correct the problem.

All other notification sounds are fine, it's just when I get an email.

Does anyone have the same issue? Any solution?

i have to add to when you go into settings then mail it does not say anything about repeat alerts only when you

go into messages it will say repeat once or twice

I have changed the repeat alert under messages from once to never. I then sent a bunch of emails from different accounts, to different accounts and here is the summary. Note: changes to the repeat option had no effect on the echo. In terms of describing the echo, it is like the sound is played twice but within a few milliseconds of the first repeat starting is when the second time the sound starts to play. I have a video of the echo if this would be valuable.

Here is the summary of my testing:

Notification when email was received by gmail account when at home screen - Echo

Notification when email was received by gmail account from within the stock mail app - NO echo.

Notification when email was received by exchange account when at home screen - Echo

Notification when email was received by exchange account from within the stock mail app - NO echo.

This limited test shows that when the stock mail app is open (not hidden, but currently up and mail is viewed,) there is no echo. Can anyone else confirm this behavior? When the phone is in another app or on the home screen, there is an echo everytime.

I see. Many of you have probably already tried this but if you haven't:

Home Button + Lock Screen Button at the same time for about 30 seconds until you see the Apple Logo appear on your home screen. If you release the buttons sooner, you will put your phone in Recovery Mode and you don't want to do this.

If this does not resolve the issue try:

Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes [<~~~ I recommend iTunes if possible]

Back up your device to iTunes via Lightning-to-USB and Restore your phone using iTunes. This will reinstall the iOS onto your iPhone and should fix any software issues you are having such as this. If you find that the issue still occurs after taking these steps please visit www.apple.com/feedback to let the developers know and they will have more insight into creating a fix for this in a future iOS patch.

I hope this helps!

I have tried all these options and the issue still occurs. I have gone to the feedback page you suggested, clicked iphone and filled out the form. However, there is no submit button once it is all filled out. This is disturbing and not like apple. How can I leave feedback when the feedback form doesn't work?

There should be plenty of feedback in this forum post for any developer to follow up.

Not sure if this helps. But here's what my phone's log file is generating during a "double" alert. It's an iPhone 6+ running 8.0.2. Keep in mind, this is all for ONE email (and happens within 4 milliseconds):

Oct 4 13:20:53 MobileMail[1117] <Warning>: Attempting to badge the application icon but haven't received permission from the user to badge the application

Oct 4 13:20:49 BTLEServer[127] <Notice>: (Note ) Removed "Email" notification #145 (✗) from com.apple.mobilemail

Oct 4 13:20:49 BTLEServer[127] <Notice>: (Note ) Removed "Email" notification #142 (✗) from com.apple.mobilemail

Oct 4 13:20:49 BTLEServer[127] <Notice>: (Note ) Removed "Email" notification #143 (✗) from com.apple.mobilemail

Oct 4 13:20:49 BTLEServer[127] <Notice>: (Note ) Added "Email" notification #148 (✗) from com.apple.mobilemail

Oct 4 13:20:49 BTLEServer[127] <Notice>: (Note ) Added "Email" notification #149 (✗) from com.apple.mobilemail

Oct 4 13:20:49 BTLEServer[127] <Notice>: (Note ) Added "Email" notification #150 (✗) from com.apple.mobilemail

Worth mentioning...

- My badges are turned ON (first message is wrong?)

- Assuming the BTLEServer is related to my Pebble watch

- When Bluetooth is turned OFF, I only get the first error (related to badges)

THIS WORKED for me. Hope it does for you too. Some of these steps may or may not be necessary, but I decided to document precisely what I did.

1. I went into: Settings / General / Notifications / Mail

2. Then, I changed the sound to something else and exited Settings.

3. I sent myself an email. The new sound was played once (no echo).

4. Then, I went back into: Settings / General / Notifications / Mail

5. I changed the sound back to the sound I wanted and exited Settings.

6. I sent myself another email. The desired sound was played once (no echo).

Seems to have fixed the echo problem (for now!).

Good luck.
