Double/Echo Email Notification Sound (iPhone 6 Plus and iOS 8)

I have iCloud push email on my iPhone 6 Plus. When I get an email notification the sound seems to 'echo'. Another way to explain how it sounds is it sounds just like when I get a notification and my iPad and iPhone are right next to each other and both notifications come in at once. It did not do it with any of my past iPhones.

Here are the steps I've taken to isolate the problem.

  1. Going into mail.app in Notifications and turning off "allow notifications" will turn off all visual notifications, but still allow audio notifications (no doubling of audio notifications)
  2. Turning off just "notification sound" by choosing "none" for each account will result in no audio notifications at all.
  3. Doing a "Reset All Settings" does not correct the problem.

All other notification sounds are fine, it's just when I get an email.

Does anyone have the same issue? Any solution?

I have a similar problem, but possibly with additional symptoms?

I have an iPhone 6 128 GB. iOS 8.0.0. I am using custom notification sounds (purchased via iTunes) for SMS as well as e-mail and a few other things. A couple of days ago, I noticed two things:

1. For e-mails, I get a double sound as described in this post except that one of the sounds is my chosen sound, the other is the default sound.

2. For SMS / iMessage, I only get a single sound, but it is the default ding, it is not my chosen sound. Perhaps worth mentioning that it has maintained my chosen vibration pattern.

When I go into settings, my custom tones are chosen for both. I have tried, changing the sounds, saving the settings and then going back and setting them back again. No effect. I have tried rebooting. No effect. I haven't done a factory reset and I don't really want to. But I will if need be.

Has anyone else had similar issues with custom ringtones?

Cheers.

Hi there - I also have the exact same issue on an IPhone 4S with IOS 8.0.2, and I tried almost everyhting but nothing worked - so this is obviously a bug coming with version 8 ...

But just to come back to one of the proposed solutions above .... mentioning that you can effectively set sounds via

1) settings >sound > new mail

or via

2) settings > notifications > mail > icloud/exchange/etc > notification sound.

Why are those 2 options there because to me this is duplicated feature to set a sound in "sound" or in "notification -> sound"

I was also thinking that both sounds defined there would play at the "same time", and that it was the issue, but it is not.

Nethertheless, why are those 2 options present and when are they used the one or the other ??

I also had the same issue on my iPhone 5s after updating to iOS 8. It happened after the update to 8.0.2, and also after switching to a new iPhone 6, and it didn't disappear after 8.1 update. Talked to Apple Support, but they only suggested to reinstall from scratch.

Then I read about the two different settings as described above. I checked my settings and found:

1) (sound section) Vibration set to Fast, and mail sound set to my mail sound

2) (notification section) Vibration set to Fast, and mail sound set to my mail sound

I then tried to find out if there is a combination of settings that makes the echo disappear. While testing, I found that the echo was not only happening with the sound, but also with the vibrating. The echo finally disappeared after I deactivated vibration in the sound section.

Since that wasn't the setting I wanted, I kept changing the settings for vibration and mail sound several times. I also tried deactivating notifications for mail completely and then reactivating it. I somehow got the settings to work, but that didn't last long (maybe because I wanted to check what the settings are).

There seem to be some really weird connections between the two settings. I also sent a bug report to Apple, I hope they fix it soon.

Did anyone successfully try reinstallation of the iPhone from scratch (without restoring the Backup)? I don't want to try this if it won't help ...

If this helps convince you that scratch doesn't help, here is what I can share.

When I got my iPhone 6 plus, I never restored from a backup I setup the phone as a new phone. I have updated to 8.1 and have had double notifications for mail from day one. I have played with all the notifications and sounds as well as disabled vibrations. I have had success with it going away but only temporarily, it has always come back. Based on my fresh out of the box setup having the echo I can't imagine restoring from scratch would make any difference.
