Touch Screen unresponsive after iOS 8 update

My 1 year old 64GB iPhone 5 touch screen started to become unresponsive after iOS 8 update

It's not consistent. Touch screen functionality will seize whilst phone is being used for either answering calls, typing messges, surfing, gaming etc and won't become responsive until it is turned off and on again (via power button). Home button is functioning with no problems.

As the phone is now out of its warranty period I want to verify if it's the OS that's causing this or do I actually have a hardware issue.

Yes, turning the Auto-Brightness off and turning the brightness down does improves things. But, the problem continues and nothing was actually fixed. We consumers just reduced the power demand for that part of the device. The operating system, in my opinion, is still the problem.

Here's an example of what my iPhone 5 has done just during the typing of this post, when I tried to type a single "h". (yuyuuuhhhbfhhhhhhbfjhhhhhnhhznhvhhhshhhfhhznhhhhhhhjjhhin). Also, the phantom touches are jurking the screen around randomly. I had to close my phone five times just to make this post.

There is an ongoing problem, and Apple doesn't seem to care. I wasted $120 on a new screen trying to fix a problem they caused with the release of iOS 8.

Seriously? Millions? I am using common sense. That's why I'm on this forum complaining about iOS 8 and requesting assistance. I want to actually identify the problem.

Many people are here complaining about an almost identical problem that has occurred after the release of iOS 8. It's either a hardware problem, or a software problem. The hardware didn't change. The software did. Common sense.

Clearly you haven't been reading the posts.

1)Prior to upgrade the phone worked flawleesly

2) IMMEDIATELY after the update the screen froze and became unresponsive.

There were no procedures done in-between, no possibility of damage. Literally turning the phone back on after activation the new OS has caused the problem, not hardware. The screen issue was resolved for me (anyway) in the next update, however in car integration is still broken using all Apple OEM equipment, either through bluetooth or dedicated iPhone cables. As well as airplay to Pioneer AV receivers.

As I have iOS 7 phones of the identical configuration (which were not updated) and continue to function normally, it is obvious to me that it's an OS issue.

I'm having the same problem. After the update, when my phone rings I can't even slide it to open, it won't respond. Or if I do eventually get it to open, I can't get the buttons to work because it's not responding to my touch anymore. Needless to say I've missed numerous calls because I can't open the phone in time to get them.

It also skips letters when I'm typing on it because it's not responding so it's intermittent and misses the touch.

Sure is frustrating.

Hate to think I have to put the entire phone on my computer (which is ancient and it may not be able to handle it) -- and then try and get it all restored. I do have everything backed up on iCloud but have no idea how to restore from there.

Thanks Apple for the update. Maybe after this I'll learn to STOP updating. I need to wait and let them work things out before screwing up my iphone. It really is frustrating,

Same problems here with my iPhone 5s.

Whone hen the phone was on iOS 7 all was good but as soon as I updated to iOS 8 I started to have the problems. I've reset/restored etc numerous times both with USB connections and over the air Wifi and no joy. I've tried disabling the emoj keyboard, tuning auto brightness off and all sorts of different options I've found on various sites,l including setting up as a new phone and not restoring just in case there was something in the backup I am restoring that is causing the problems and nope, it's definately iOS 8.

the phone is consistent with its problem, there is no intermittens issue, it is the same each time and I do not believe its s hardware;

1. Touch home key to 'wake phone up'

2. Slide slider or finger print access to 'log in'

3. Within 10 seconds or so the screen 'freezes' with the exception of the very bottom of the screen where the dock is

4. Press power button to'sleep'

5. Press power button or touch home key as per #1 above

6. Same as #2 above

7. Phone is usable and I can use it until the battery runs out without any issues, but if it goes to sleep for more thank a brief period, such as >2mins (I've not timed this to be able to provide an exact time and if it's consistently the same amount of time each time) then I have to go to #1 above

very frustrating although I can get the phone into a usable state after faffing around, so I'm in a much better position than others by the sounds of things; not being able to take calls would be the end of it for me as I rely on my phone for my business so I sympathise with you about this, is it a contract phone that you can lean on your operator provider such as EE?

if you want to try a reset/restore and you know you have a backup on iCloud it is actually very easy, as I've done a couple of restores on an iPad in the last couple of days using the same process. Just send the phone into DFU whilst connected to iTunes, do the reinstall of software and then when it's done, log in to the phone, setup wifi and choose to restore from iCloud; ignore the message in iTunes at the 'set up as new phone' screen.

just hope Apple fix this in 8.1.3 as they must know about this even though they are not talking 😟

Jan 16, 2015 5:21 AM in response to topbanana1664

There is nothing to "fix" in 8.1.3 as most people are not having this problem. It is a problem with your individual device. If you've restored as a NEW device, without loading a backup file to test for a few days, and you've still got the screen problem, then it is a hardware problem, and you should make an appointment with the Genius Bar to have it evaluated.

Jan 16, 2015 6:19 AM in response to topbanana1664

I have to agree with topbanana, having switched to iOS 8.2 Beta 3 and a fresh wipe the issue has drastically been reduced. In fact it almost never happens now, with background app refreshing running on the apps I need and brightness no longer being automatic. I'm not saying it's perfect as I can recall a time last week where it happened once needing a screen refresh but compared to any version of iOS 8 prior to 8.2 it's been borderline non-existent. If the issue is as bad as it was for me, the $6 tag for UDID to get 8.2 was worth it.

Jan 16, 2015 8:06 AM in response to AmishCake

Seriously, what are you suggesting is the problem? Have you even dealt with an iPhone 5 that's showing these problems? Are you speaking from experiance?

I've encountered 3 iPhone 5's having touchscreen problems after the iOS 8 update. Seems clear to me.

If the problem wasn't caused by the iOS 8 update, then what caused it? You're saying it's not a software/firmware issue. Inferring it to be a hardware issue. So, did Apple make a bad produce with the iPhone 5?

iOS 7, everything worked perfectly.

Updated to iOS 8, and touchscreen problems began.

If it's a hardware issue, maybe it's as simple as the iPhone 5's hardware isn't very compatible with the current version of iOS 8.

Please help us identify the problem, and not just be a naysayer to this topic.

You said: "The screen issue was resolved for me (anyway) in the next update, however in car integration is still broken using all Apple OEM equipment, either through bluetooth or dedicated iPhone cables"

Are you saying the blue tooth integration with your car phone/speakers does not work anymore? The reason I'm asking is because I never put two and two together, but after my update, I noticed that my bluetooth (even though still connected) no longer works for handsfree through my car phone system. Could it be the new update screwed that up too?
