Touch Screen unresponsive after iOS 8 update

My 1 year old 64GB iPhone 5 touch screen started to become unresponsive after iOS 8 update

It's not consistent. Touch screen functionality will seize whilst phone is being used for either answering calls, typing messges, surfing, gaming etc and won't become responsive until it is turned off and on again (via power button). Home button is functioning with no problems.

As the phone is now out of its warranty period I want to verify if it's the OS that's causing this or do I actually have a hardware issue.

Neither Bluetooth or direct cable worked. My in car stereo offered both options (the cable is nice as it also charges the phone and all iPhone music/siri (for directions..and yes the cable is not third party but OEM from car manufacturer so it is MFI) and phone controls are accessible from a steering wheel control clusters.

When none of that works you obviously run the risk of a hefty fine and demerit points (in BC, Canada anyway). Taking a car in for firmware updates is the kind of engineering arrogance that's unusual but it's what some people suggested…no updates were available however from my dealership (Car is only 2 years old).

I noticed today whilst 'playing' that the issue seems to appear once the phone has been in sleep mode for a small period of time (approx 2mins+).

the screen freezes on me about 20-30 seconds after I enter my passcode or use fingerprint recognition, but what I realised today as I was more patient with the phone and didn't just reach for the power button straight away! is that after about 20-30 seconds the screen does actually become active again, albeit uncontrollable, with the screen thrashing all over the place. I then noticed if I waited a little longer, another 20-30 seconds the screen becomes responsive again and just 'normal'.

so basically what I'm saying in my case is that if i take the phone out of sleep and enter a pin, I can leave the phone for a few mins and I don't have any issues at all. it would be interesting if anyone else could try this out?

I feel I should update my issues with the iOS updates.

1) Screen is back to being responsive and operating normally since the first bugfix

2) AirPrint is still non functional with Aiprint certified printer that's on the Apple list of printers certified to work (works fine with iOS 7 devices and earlier)

3) Car stereo is now working both through direct cable and bluetooth. I didn't do anything special, but I did go and delete every profile and start fresh. Could be the care wasn't recognizing the phone properly after updating?

4) Deactivating all internet connected routers and the main modem for an extended period (and unplugging devices that weren't directly benefitting from an internet connection (like a cable box with ethernet connection, which may confuse the network) has made the Pioneer receiver visible again to both Yosemite and iso8 devices.

I had it on 8.1.2 and it froze in strange views, extremely large and unresponsive. So I went into DPU mode, Found it on the internet, then downloaded and reinstalled the entire operating system, and then I could restore my backup. It wouldn't let me restore the back up until I turned off find my iPhone App and I couldn't do that as the sign on screen was unrecognizable and unresponsive. Hope you have a back up, took about an hour.

Entering DFU Mode on iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

  1. Plug your device into your computer with a USB cable.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Hold the Power button for 3 seconds.
  4. Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds.
  5. Release the Power button but keep holding the Home button.
  6. After about 15 seconds you will be alerted by iTunes saying that it has detected a device in Recovery Mode.

I have the same problem with my A1428 iPhone 5 64 GB. My phone was working perfectly fine up until I restored it to iOS 7 and iOS 8. This makes me believe there is a serious software/firmware issue with touch input.

My phone is currently stuck on the "Slide to Set Up" screen. Just tried restoring to 8.1.3, but this does not fix the issue. I got the screen to respond very briefly after I turned on VoiceOver mode by triple clicking the home button. I was able to setup the phone and use it as normal. But I left the phone for a couple of hours and when I came back to it, the screen was not responding to any touch input any more.

I took it to Apple Genius Bar (University Village), they said they would replace the screen and try to fix it (the charge would be $129 + tax). That did not resolve the issue. However, they did not charge me for my replaced screen and they left it on the device. Not sure if they intended to do that? Regardless, replacing the screen doesn't fix the problem.

I hope Apple addresses this issue soon.

I MIGHT HAVE FOUND A SOLUTION. This worked for me:

1. Remove the SIM (I had a non active AT&T SIM)

2. Restart the phone by holding the power and home button for a few seconds. Let go when the phone restarts. I had to power on the phone again because I just powered it off.

3. Wait for the phone to boot.

4. Miraculously the phone was able to respond to my touch input.

tap the screen twice with three fingers. All this other is just resetting to the default settings which is not zoomed. Tap the screen twice with three fingers it zooms, tap it twice with three fingers and it returns to normal size screen. See if this works. I reloaded the software and restored from back up which fixed it. Then an Apple tech it was zooming. Apparently I hit the screen twice with 3 fingers zooming it, and didn't know all I had to do was tap it twice with three fingers. Easy fix, a learning curve. Not sure why they have it zoom so much, as the screen seemed to not respond to any drag or other except when it was looking for the number code, then I just hit it four times and it gave me the buzz, incorrect pass code. So it all makes sense. Don't worry, try it even if its fixed, it works fine. Frank

I've got a 1~2 year old iPhone5S that is having just about all these things happening...

  • freezing when unlocking using either PIN or fingerprint
  • freezing when swiping screens
  • phantom touches, swipes, slides & zoom
  • phantom text input in imessage, text messages, email, notes, facebook... just about every app
  • phantom phone calls
  • randomly swiping down to the search bar
  • randomly opening the camera app
  • flicking left and right, up & down very quickly so it doesn't leave the home screen but appears to "shake" all over the place
  • randomly enabling app maneuvering and moving apps around, deleting apps sometimes
  • deleting calendar appointments while I'm making them
  • deleting alarms while I'm trying to set them
  • very slow wi-fi connection at times
  • very slow 3G & 4G connection at times

Needless to say, I am frustrated. Seriously considering a switch to Android which ***** because this phone has worked PERFECTLY until it was updated to iOS8, iOS8.1 and now iOS8.1.3.

I've tried - restarting, putting to sleep & waking, leaving it alone, resetting it (hard & soft), restoring to back-up, restoring to new, un-enabling background refresh, changing auto-brightness to manual...

I'm pulling my hair out here.

To anyone that might also have the unresponsive/freezing touch screen/scrolling problem, I eventually fixed it on an iPhone 4S running iOS 8.1.3. I tried several methods mentioned in this thread but to no avail. Here's what I did:

1. On your device go to: Settings>iCloud

2. Activate iCloud for the following:

-Photos

-Mail

-Contacts

-Calendars

-Reminders

-Safari

-Notes

-Backup

-Find My iPhone

3. Check to see if the problem is fixed.

A few notes about this fix:

  • Since one of the problems is scrolling and freezing of the device you might need to close settings (double tap Home button and swipe up) several times until you're able to activate/deactivate items.
  • Any of those items could be the culprit in this issue but I'm not certain which one fixed it since I didn't try to recreate the problem until I had activated all of them but Backup seems to be the big one. I would try that first.
  • If some of those are already activated, deactivate them and activate them again.
  • When I activated Backup it said that I did not have enough storage on iCloud. I just selected Close and left it on and went back one menu. Afterwards I went back and turned it off.
  • On this iPhone (relative's phone) Mail, Notes and Reminders were not configured and I was asked to create an iCloud E-mail Account. This could also be what fixed it.
  • I had already restored this phone several times and was asked by iTunes to turn off Find My iPhone, it is also possible that after turning it off and on again (yeah, IT Crowd, I know) the problem was fixed.

Besides the freezing/unresponsiveness, this iPhone was not able to make or receive calls. This fix solved that problem too. It seems this is an iCloud sync issue. Now the phone is working great. Hopefully this can help some of you and Apple can get their act together since this is not the first time I've seen big problems with iCloud.
