Can't play music in car via usb after iOS 8 update

Hi, After the IOS8 Update and (now the 8.0.2 update) I'm not longer able to play music via the usb lead (OK via BlueTooth still), I have a Mazda 6, I get 'iPod Error' on the screen after it tries to read the phones music. It's not the lead, I've tried several and its not the car head unit as it still works on a device using IOS7 (as my phone did).

The case is with Mac but interested if anyone has any ideas/suggestions.

I wondering if it's something to do with 'Air play'?. Was there anything done to Airplay on the IOS8 update?

Apple tell me there is no reason for it not to work, nothing on the IOS8 update should effect the music via usb but it doesn't work.

Cheers

100drh,

Have you reported this to Apple?

I got the impression when I did my report that Apple wanted to lay the blame with Mazda and even sent me a link to a support group who were moaning about the Mazda console.

Fortunately the guy I was talking to on the Apple support 'chat' was good enough to believe my answers to his questions and put a 'ticket in' for the issue.

Good to hear I'm not the only one with the problem but sad that we have it in the first place!

Cheers

This is an Apple issue for sure. I have an iPhone 6 and everything was good till I had stock iOS 8. Music thru USB stopped after upgrading to iOS 8.0.2 (did not upgrade to iOS 8.0.1 because of issues that I read). Not only music, everything stopped - no Siri, no navigation, no Audiobook. Hoping that 8.1 will fix it, I waited but that did not either. I also stopped by my closest Apple store and they were no help either - "wait for a software update that fixes this".

I think my problem was that I did not have any music on my phone locally. I was streaming through iRadio, Pandora and never had issues till iOS 8.Finally fixed this via the following steps:

1. Reset All Settings

2. Downloaded a song from iTunes for $0.99. If you can transfer something from your computer, even better. It should work even then.

3. Voila.....everything works again. Music through streaming, local music, Siri, Audiobooks...

Hope this helps!

I drive a Nissan van for work and up until the update it worked fine. I'd plug my iphone in the USB and music would start playing. Now i have to press play on the phone itself. Also if I change album via the stereo, the music won't start playing. I again have to press play on the phone. Very annoying. I've also noticed when the album finishes, it used to start from the beginning of the same album, now it starts the next album (not a problem but things have definitely changed and its not the car stereo)

Apple are going to end up with a name like Nokia if they don't start sorting all these things out within days instead of it taking months.

I have an email from Mazda that say's there is no planned update, my dealers are morons. Last week my phone for some random reason worked for two days, now I get iPod error again. I give up

I append the following which is Mazda's reply.

Thank you for raising your concerns with us.

I have detailed below the responses to your questions in the order in which they were raised. Please accept my apologies for my lengthy reply.

1. I am sorry to learn the staff at Donalds Mazda were unable to provide clear information concerning the software installed on your vehicle, where to locate this information and how to update it if required. If you select “Settings” on the home screen, then “Status & Information” and then “Version Information” a list of technical details are displayed including APP. This is the software information and should display 10.….., if you are able to confirm this to me, I can confirm whether you require an update and provide your dealer with the relevant guidance on how to do this. Once again I am sorry your dealer was unhelpful ion this respect.

2. I understand after installing the ISO8 software update on your IPhone you can no longer play music via the USB cable. As previously advised in my colleagues earlier communication the software is not compatible with our systems. I understand you have taken advice from Apple who believe the problem lies with the unit, I am unable to agree with this as the system worked prior to the latest update. I am sorry you feel the system fitted to your vehicle is substandard because of this, however there are no plans to carry out an update to overcome this. I understand that Apple have launched IOS 8.1 which, as I understand is meant to rectify some Bluetooth connectivity concerns. In view of this I can only suggest that you speak again with Apple to identify if, after installation, previous functionality is restored.

3. With regard to the various forums concerning dissatisfaction with the functionality of the system fitted, these are of course noted. Some action has been taken following feedback from our customer’s and other feedback is still under review. For you information, I have provided these details below.

We have an enhanced USB module which improves the following two features. Your IPhone, currently installed with IS08, will not benefit from the following.

  • System now reads USB device in the background, allowing the device connected to be used after approximately 30 seconds.
  • Playback of a connected music device is resumed from the last position where playback stopped at ignition off and plays back alphabetically from this point.

Other customer feedback that has been relayed to the factory consist of the following and these areas are under study. We will not be able to affect an enhancement unless after the study it is decided a retrospective upgrade is available.

  • Repeat/Shuffle functions to be used straight away, currently you need to have first selected a title and then use the shuffle or repeat functions.
  • Playback from a playlist where it left off following ignition turn off.
  • Playback from where device left off with IPods’s made before 2008.
  • Repeat and Shuffle functions via Bluetooth connection.
  • Avoid phone book contacts downloading each time when connected via USB.

I am not aware of any aftermarket system in the UK or abroad and this is an area Mazda UK has not entered into. The above areas are under study and we will notify our dealers regarding any future updates that may become available.

I trust the above information confirms our current position with regard to the feedback we have received, and I thank you again for raising you concerns with us.

Yours sincerely

Same problems here. Half the time it doesn't work and the only way it does is if i use the handset to change songs, etc. which defeats the purpose of bluetooth and is dangerous to do while driving, obviously. I restored all settings, which was kind of a pain seeing as how i had to reset every single thing again. It worked for two days in my car and now is starting to mess up again. The first thing to go is skipping back to a previous song. Then the whole thing goes kaflooey. Pretty irritated as this is the main thing I care to use on my phone. I have a Nissan Murano. Haven't contacted anyone and judging from all these posts, it won't do any good if i did. Is the next iOS8 upgrade going to fix this crap????

Hi everyone I did the update to iOS 8.1.1 last night on my iPhone 5 and now when I connect my phone to the USB port in my 2013 Mazda 2 it won't recognise my phone and it won't even charge my phone. It will play through AUX but the most annoying part is not being able to charge my phone, I was about to go into Mazda but just read all of the stories. So what do you suggest next? Are you guys able to still charge your phone in the car?

Can everyone PLEASE stop banging on about Mazda - it is NOT exclusively a Mazda problem. I have a Nissan 370z and everything was fine before this terrible upgrade. Now no music in the car. If I get out of the car and into my home I can play music no problem - inside the car via USB nothing ! It is NOT anything to do with the car it is 100% IOS8 !

Why is a company the size of apple releasing upgrades untested !

This is the last straw I am sick of problems every single time you load anything new form Apple - I'm off to Samsung !
