iPhone 6 Plus Crashing (a lot)

Hi All,

I was hoping for some very detailed advice on getting my iPhone 6 Plus to stop crashing. It's happening many times per day and almost makes using the device futile.

When it arrived, I backed up my old iPhone 5S to iTunes (encrypted) and then restored that backup onto the iPhone 6 Plus. During the restoration everything went smooth, but after it rebooted and began syncing the apps back over, I would hear the phone ping (charge sound) and syncing would pause for a moment. Turns out it was having a mini crash and the Apple logo would appear for a few seconds, then it would start syncing again. No problems or errors were produced on the iPhone or iTunes.

Once restoration was complete (iOS 8.0.2), all of my stuff was there and iTunes still reported 0 errors. But as I used the phone, I would notice some weird stuff:

1) Swiping between app pages quickly would cause the same mini crash and the Apple logo would appear a few seconds before the phone came back up.

2) After launching an app a few times, the "preview" iOS shows when zooming into the app would become the app icon itself (rather than a preview of the app). This would happen for all apps when entering and exiting.

3) Some stock apps (like Calendar) would be missing their icon altogether.

4) The dark area representing a folder would disappear and the tiny icons just looked as if they were floating.

5) Lots more crashing (when using Siri, when just in my pocket, etc).

If you're still reading this, it's obvious I have a problem in my backup that is causing springboard issues (or something). The obvious solution is to restore the phone to factory settings and not reapply the backup, but I have valuable text messages dating back to 2007 that I'd really like to retain. Keeping that in mind, here's what I've tried:

- Restoring from the same iTunes backup again

- Turning off "Documents and Data" in iCloud

- Reset all Settings

- Reset Home Screen Layout

- Restore from slightly older iCloud backup

- Reduce the number of apps being synced over

When I setup as a new phone after restoration, the problem does appear to go away (in the brief amount of time I spent trying to crash it). I really just need some troubleshooting advice I haven't tried that would (at a minimum) allow me to retain the text message conversations and related media (picture and video messages).

Any thoughts that could accomplish this or information on what this problem actually is? I'm willing to supply logs, etc, if that would be useful.

Thanks very much!!

Payton

What a shame. I want my apps/games back on my 6+ 64GB! Will await the NEXT iOS update....

I can only imagine the agony of the phone constantly crashing while trying to delete tons of apps one at a time. When deleting them shouldn't be necessary in the first place. (The phone isn't sold with "64GB of space* Note: space is for photos, not for apps"!)

Just a thought--I haven't tried this, but if you HAVE to mass delete some apps during the crashing problem, could the following make it easier?

- Connect to iTunes and use iTunes to do the deletion.

- And have the phone screen turned OFF during the process.

(I'm wondering if the screen being off will prevent Springboard from trying to refresh--and thus, maybe, prevent the crashes during deletion. The problem does seem to be Springboard.)

I was just at an Apple Store yesterday and got the same old song and dance of "reset to factory settings and reload everything one by one." Out of the 15 techs there, not a single one had any idea what was causing this problem of crashing and rebooting, so it looks like Apple hasn't spread this info through the ranks. As you can se from the date of my post, there still hasn't been a recall.

It's still crashing. I've been playing around with my phone and I've found that it's almost as if there's a limit to how much of the 64gb I can use before it starts to randomly crash. After all the Apple required stuff, it shows that my memory is around 55gb. As long as I don't go over 25gb of stuff, the phone doesn't crash. If I go over, then it starts. This is the exact problem that I've found described over and over. Seems there's a problem with the type of memory that Apple used in the 6 Plus. The TLC NAND flash (triple level cell) appears to be the problem. Newer 6 Plus phones use MLC NAND flash (multi-level cell). TLC NAND flash is much cheaper than MLC, but it's a lot slower when it comes to reading and writing data so that seems to be the problem with the boot loops and crashes with the 6 and 6 Plus. All the articles and posts I found recommend taking the phone in for a replacement, which is also what the Apple store said to me when I called about needing to bring my phone back to them yet again. I haven't done that yet as I was hoping that the iOS update to 8.2 would help, but no luck.

The main reason I went ahead and downloaded iOS 8.2 is for the security fix (even though it's considered a "freak" flaw that most people won't experience). It's also supposed to help with mail stability, maps stability, and stability on some of the music apps. As for the random crashing issue, nope, still there. Whenever I go into the 'Diagnostics & Usage Data' to check on the reasons for the crashing, it always comes back with Springboard errors. The Apple techs tell me that makes it a software issue, not hardware (meaning the crappy TLC NAND flash memory), and they all tell me that they've never seen anything like it before. I printed off several articles and board discussions that all point to the TLC NAND flash issue, and they scratch their heads and go "Huh...never heard of that before." Somehow I think this is all bs on their part, because while sitting at the waiting area tables all those times I have spoken to at least two dozen other 6 Plus owners who have the exact same issues and that's the reason why they are at the Apple store. Factory resets DO NOT fix the issue, because once you re-add apps that don't come preloaded on the phone the crashing starts anew. If you have an appointment with an Apple tech to check out your phone in the near future, do a quick Google search for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus crash issues (Mac Rumors and BGR have several articles), print a couple out, and take them with you when you go to the Genius Bar for your appointment.

I've got an iPhone 6 Plus 128GB and have had issues with it freezing since I bought it (Nov 2014).

I've recently upgraded the phone to iOS 8.3 and the issues are still there.

I remember reading an article on the web a few months back that suggested that these issues (that were affecting many iPhone 6/+ 128GB owners) were probably hardware related as Apple had switched to a different kind of flash memory for the 128GB model that was supposed to be faster etc. The article also suggested that Apple may have reverted to using the previously used flash memory after these issue came to light... I do wonder if this is the case, as so far, nothing I've tried (in a software related solution) has managed to improve the stability of my iPhone.

Issues I've encountered are:

- Freezing - iPhone becomes non-responsive, can't scroll, home button doesn't register, power button doesn't register (very frequent)

- Sound stuttering - when listening to music and an animation occurs on screen or you change orientation from portrait to landscape (very frequent)

- App crashes for no apparent reason (somewhat frequent)

- Apps not responding for a few seconds after task switching (somewhat frequent)

- iOS crashes and phone reboots for no apparent reason (occasionally)

Apple support just told me to try taking a backup of my phone and then restore from the backup and see if that fixes it. (I have serious doubts) If that doesn't fix it then I'm told that I need to restore as a new phone and load each app back on from scratch... which is a pretty unacceptable solution as I will loose all my app data! (not every app keeps its data in the cloud). ...and judging from the previous comments on here it would appear that this may not even resolve the problem either.

If this is really a software issue, I don't understand why it hasn't been solved... There has been several releases of iOS 8 and yet there are still customers like me who are experiencing these problems on the latest firmware release. What's going on?

You have hit the nail on the head. Nothing is going on and it appears Apple is just closing it's eyes and hoping the problem goes away. I didn't think Apple would do this until I read about the MacBook Pro that I wanted to buy had been in a lawsuit settlement that lasted several years until Apple finally decided to fix the problem. If they get away with that this time, then there will be little to fix as the phones will be obsolete by then. If you try suggesting an idea you are likely to get your reply deleted. I asked about the fact that Apple is increasing new production of iPhone 6 to include 2 GB RAM and the original has only 1 GB RAM. That seems likely to indicate a RAM problem: the symptoms we see plus the move to double the RAM. Apple can't put more RAM in existing phones but could replace those phones if it is a RAM problem with new 2 GB ones. However Apple seems to remain silent on this problem just as their genius bar employees have been told to be silent. They will give no information other than to try solutions you can read right here that do not work. Perhaps some state may have a lemon law such as with cars that need the same problem fixed over up to about 3 times before the car maker must refund the buyer's costs. It would be a lot better though if Apple would speak out about the problem and announce a serious effort to fix it. Leaving so many customers in the dark about when or if their iPhones will function properly is not the behavior expected of a company overflowing with cash from the sale of these same iPhones. I don't wish to criticize Apple. I love my iPhone 6 plus. I just want a solution to a problem that does indeed exist.

8.3 has been even worse. I didn't even bother with 8.2. The most disconcerting thing is that the issue happens with so many apple apps. My battery life isn't what it was with 8.0.2. Almost all of the 1Gb of ram is continuously in use-the most I've ever seen free/not active is about 200 MB. I often get issues with spotlight taking 10+ seconds to respond. The way results are sorted in there is still hit and miss. When it works, it's great. The problem is, most of the time it doesn't work.

Apr 26, 2015 10:27 PM in response to Macabus

Well I tried the restore from backup operation as suggested by Apple support but based on my last week of usage it has actually made the problem even worse than before 😟 and I agree with you Macabus - it is even worse under iOS 8.3!

Seems my only other option is to restore as new and then load every app back on one by one and start from scratch? This is a totally unacceptable solution IMO. I have some apps that don't store their data in the cloud and if I blow away my phone like that, all that data will be lost... not to mention years of my iMessage history etc.

I'm not a happy customer at present Apple! You need to do better than this! 😮

Apr 26, 2015 10:44 PM in response to Payton Garner

Actually you don't need iTunes back up at all. you can buy an extra space just for a month to migrate the device. You can take iCloud backup from old device or if you don't have old device anymore you can take iTunes backup on device than backup that device to iCloud. iCloud can backup all messages too by the way. And for apps if you used game center you already have you levels there and iCloud not restoring apps from backup it downloads them from App Store again but with your data so you ll not have crash issue. I'm using 5s and whenever i have an issue with my device or there is a sw update i restore it and take my iCloud backup to device. I have never lost any of my data

Apr 27, 2015 12:54 AM in response to Nibhurrereya

Nibhurrereya. By Apple support's logic it is the restoring from backup that is causing the problem.

I have tried restoring from iCloud before as well and that is no better.

There is also no supported way of only restoring certain things... It's either all or nothing.

Also, my issue is specific to the iPhone 6 Plus 128GB. I never had and trouble with my 5s.

Apr 27, 2015 4:22 AM in response to vanitalo

Various news articles that are similar to the issues I've been experiencing... it's definitely worse now that I'm on iOS 8.3.

My main issue is the whole phone freezing up (can't quit an app, can't task switch, nothing)... it becomes completely unresponsive to touch and button presses, sometimes it recovers after 5 to 10 seconds, sometimes the apps crash after the freeze... it definitely seems to be memory related. I think I'll have to make an appointment with the Genius Bar and see if they will replace the hardware... I don't believe there is any software solution to this problem... it must be defective flash memory (TLC-NAND). 😠

I've only got 193 apps installed, so I don't think my issue is related to the number of apps installed as some others have claimed...
