Why is AppleTV trying to take my IP address?

My MacBook Pro stalls during browsing and has trouble trying to resolve hosts. Looking in the console messages I noticed the following lines.

9/23/14 12:53:10.961 PM configd[26]: DHCP en1: defending IP 192.168.1.15 against BonjourSleepProxy 58:55:ca:26:bf:ad 1 (of 5)

9/23/14 12:53:11.000 PM kernel[0]: en1 duplicate IP address 192.168.1.15 sent from address 58:55:ca:26:bf:ad

That MAC address belongs to my AppleTV. The AppleTV was configured to use DHCP.

I changed the AppleTV to use a fixed IP address. I am still having the same issue. Now I see the following messages in console.

9/26/14 10:28:14.703 PM configd[26]: MANUAL en1: defending IP 192.168.1.50 against BonjourSleepProxy 58:55:ca:26:bf:ad 1 (of 5)

9/26/14 10:28:55.000 PM kernel[0]: en1 duplicate IP address 192.168.1.50 sent from address 58:55:ca:26:bf:ad

Why is the AppleTV doing this? Any ideas?

I think this is somehow related to your appleTV thinking your computer is still asleep, when it is actually awake. The apple TV is trying to answer to your computer's IP for you, causing the conflict. I'm having similar issues, seems new since the yosemite upgrade. Any actual experts would be welcome to weigh in with a solution.

Just wanted to chime in with a "me too". There's been a lot of reports of problems with WiFI since Yosemite came out... wonder how many of those people have an Apple TV.

I too, after seeing this issue set both my macbook and the AppleTV to specific addresses (outside of the usual DHCP range in my router), and yet I'm still getting lots of lines like this in my console:

10/28/14 8:55:41.000 AM kernel[0]: en1 duplicate IP address 192.168.1.80 sent from address 58:55:ca:29:ec:XX

10/28/14 8:55:41.551 AM configd[28]: DHCP en1: defending IP 192.168.1.80 against BonjourSleepProxy 58:55:ca:29:ec:XX 3 (of 5)

... and this has happened several times now as I was actively using the Macbook.

Well I've been fighting this and blaming the router for the last month and just started going through my syslog and I also see the:

kernel[0]: en1 duplicate IP address 192.168.1.152 sent from address 58:55:ca:1e:xx:xx (which is my appletv)

When this happens my MBP is pretty much useless on the network. The only way to fix it was to turn off and on wifi. This started when I installed yosemite.

Both Macs are updated to 10.10.1. I do not have any AirPort base stations.

The problem is with Apple's Bonjour Wake on Demand Sleep Proxy, see About Wake on Demand and Bonjour Sleep Proxy - Apple ....

The thing is you don;t need to have an Airport router, if there is no Airport router then the Apple Tv will take over the function of handling this.

See Shared name of Mac keeps changing for a discussion of the problem that some of us have been experiencing since Yosemite came out. It appears that 10.10.1 fixed the problem (at least for me) but after a week of no name changes it appears to have happened again but I can;t be sure something else did;t trigger it.

One thing to keep in mind that while it is annoying it does not usually cause the network to malfunction, at least that was true in my case. Hopefully Apple is looking into this and a permanent solution will be released.
