Why is AppleTV trying to take my IP address?

My MacBook Pro stalls during browsing and has trouble trying to resolve hosts. Looking in the console messages I noticed the following lines.

9/23/14 12:53:10.961 PM configd[26]: DHCP en1: defending IP 192.168.1.15 against BonjourSleepProxy 58:55:ca:26:bf:ad 1 (of 5)

9/23/14 12:53:11.000 PM kernel[0]: en1 duplicate IP address 192.168.1.15 sent from address 58:55:ca:26:bf:ad

That MAC address belongs to my AppleTV. The AppleTV was configured to use DHCP.

I changed the AppleTV to use a fixed IP address. I am still having the same issue. Now I see the following messages in console.

9/26/14 10:28:14.703 PM configd[26]: MANUAL en1: defending IP 192.168.1.50 against BonjourSleepProxy 58:55:ca:26:bf:ad 1 (of 5)

9/26/14 10:28:55.000 PM kernel[0]: en1 duplicate IP address 192.168.1.50 sent from address 58:55:ca:26:bf:ad

Why is the AppleTV doing this? Any ideas?

Did you look through the thread I referenced? If you turn off Wake for network access in the system(s) it should stop trying to rename.

BTW how does this make the computer unusable? In all cases I've seen there is really no impact to the system or the network. Perhaps you have a different problem. Again try turning off the Wake for Network Access and turn off any sharing in the system that is unusable and see if that makes a difference.

I looked through the thread. I don't think that is an issue for me. I don't care if my computer keeps incrementing the number. I turned off the 'Wake for network access' since I don't really need that anyway.

The AppleTV makes the Mac unusable because the Mac can no longer get to the network. The IP address is eaten by the AppleTV.

. The IP address is eaten by the AppleTV.

Not really sure what that means.

This error message

9/26/14 10:28:14.703 PM configd[26]: MANUAL en1: defending IP 192.168.1.50 against BonjourSleepProxy

is caused as it says by the BonjourSleepProxy running in the Apple TV. If no systems have Wake for network access set then then will not register with the Sleep Proxy and the issue should not occur. You should look at the Apple document on the Sleep Proxy to get an idea of what it is for.

Are you saying that even with Wake turned off and no sharing you are getting this error message? It should't be and if you are you should contact Apple and file a bug report.

I don't think that is an issue for me.

Well it is possible this is something different but unlikely.

In regard to "The IP address is eaten by the AppleTV"... The Mac which is spitting out the error messages can not connect to the network. Therefore that Mac is pretty useless.

I have disabled the option in the Macs and powered on the AppleTV. I will see if this temporary workaround works or not.

The bottom line is that Apple needs to fix this issue. I am a long time Apple user and advocate. I think issues like this should never happen but if they do, they should be resolved quickly. A less technical user wouldn't go digging for possible solutions.

I agree, been fighting it myself since Yosemite was installed but luckily for me the systems and network remain useable. Looked like 10.10.1 fixed it but now I'm not so sure, had some strange results after the upgrade but haven't had the time to look into it.

In your case as the network (or at least that system) becomes unusable I'd look to see if the only issue is the Bonjour Sleep Proxy, You might have other issues. Look to see if you are getting the defend message if the problem reoccurs.

good luck
