On shut down, popup appears to ask if I want to abort installation

Hello!

I am currently on a Macbook Pro Retina late 2013 model running Maverick (10.9.5). I have noticed if I shut down my computer, the screen goes grey and a popup appears with the package icon asking me if I want to abort the install in progress. I have no idea what install. If I chose abort, then it immediately shuts down. Next time I try to shut down, it will do the same thing again.

This time, I selected Yes to continue installing, another box that was blank appeared and then a few minutes later the Mac shut down.

I have not noticed anything weird since-- although I am a paranoid maybe I started to download something nefarious and mistakenly installed it.

Any clues as to what this was? Or has anyone else seen this?

I am running a Macscan now but I have heard it is pretty unreliable. Any other ideas of things I should do?

Thanks!

Christina

Thanks Jack!

I searched for "Reset Search" in Spotlight (with Application as a filter, click that little plus icon to the right to filter the search) and then used AppZapper to completely remove it. Now, no lame "Abort Install" dialogue on restart or shutdown.

I have found the source of the problem, and it is, in the case I have here, the Genieo adware PUP.

The solution

Open Activity Monitor from the Utilities folder.

Look down the list of Process Names till you see Installer.

Highlight it and click the gear icon, and choose Sample Process

Some seconds later you will see a text file appear entitles Sample of Installer

There you will see the path to the item that is trying to install.

In my case /Users/XXXX/Library/Application Support/com.genioinnovation.Installer/Completer.app/Contents/MacOS/Installer

It's just a case of removing the whole folder called com.genioinnovation.Installer

However, that adware has probably insinuated itself elsewhere into the Mac quite likely with a few 'friends', so you should really use AdWareMedic (now owned by Malwarebytes) to get rid of any traces of Genieo, MacKeeper and the other slipstreamed malware.

Hope that helps.

I suddenly received this unusual "Continue the installation" ~ Chose 'Abort' if you wish to cancel the installation." message upon shut down and was unable to click on the Abort option before system quickly shut down. After sleeping overnight on the issue I suddenly remembered I was downloading a huge file of two very large images to Mail, and because the message was taking too long to download to my server I realized the file was too big and I quit Mail during the download. I then took the oversize photos in question and dumped them in the trash and was met with this message.

I selected Empty on the message, this action then emptied my trash. I then shut down and the Abort message appeared one more time. I then restarted and shut down and the file had been cleared from the previous shut down, all was then OK and the system shut down in the normal fashion thereafter.

My only question now is "Where is that temporary file located within El Capitan" just in case this happens again and I don't want to trash my images. The Abort message does not allow enough time to select the Abort option as it ignored my selecting Abort option when I tried to beat the clock before closing down.
