On shut down, popup appears to ask if I want to abort installation

Hello!

I am currently on a Macbook Pro Retina late 2013 model running Maverick (10.9.5). I have noticed if I shut down my computer, the screen goes grey and a popup appears with the package icon asking me if I want to abort the install in progress. I have no idea what install. If I chose abort, then it immediately shuts down. Next time I try to shut down, it will do the same thing again.

This time, I selected Yes to continue installing, another box that was blank appeared and then a few minutes later the Mac shut down.

I have not noticed anything weird since-- although I am a paranoid maybe I started to download something nefarious and mistakenly installed it.

Any clues as to what this was? Or has anyone else seen this?

I am running a Macscan now but I have heard it is pretty unreliable. Any other ideas of things I should do?

Thanks!

Christina

Thanks Jack!

I searched for "Reset Search" in Spotlight (with Application as a filter, click that little plus icon to the right to filter the search) and then used AppZapper to completely remove it. Now, no lame "Abort Install" dialogue on restart or shutdown.

If you have your Preferences checked to allow update downloads to occur in the background, that is most likely what is happening. Check your settings here:

System Preferences > Software Update

If you have everything checked, it is probably in the middle of downloading an update when you're trying to shut down (obviously the system doesn't know that you are wanting to shut down...).

I wish I was 100% sure this was it but everything for my updates is turned off...it is possible that I may have started to update something and it didnt finish. I haven't noticed it as of lately, since the last time I clicked "abort" but like I said all my update settings are unchecked and nothing automatically downloads or processes in the background. Hopefully your answer helps someone.
