Battery Drains in iOS 8.0.2 iPhone 5s

Yesterday i updated my iPhone 5s to iOS 8.0.2, since then my battery has drained really fast its gone from 100% to 80% in 10 minutes. I called Apple support and they ran a diagnostic test on the phone but nothing showed up.Does anyone have any solutions to why this is happening?, i always force close the apps after i finish using them so i honestly don't know why this is happening. Is it just iOS 8? if so can it be resolved in the next Apple software update?

guys,

I also managed to reduce most of the battery drain in my iphone 5s iOS 8.0.2.

Since battery drain is unacceptable and most of us can't afford to just "set as new phone" and lose all data, here you are all the steps of my workaround.

0) Backup everything you want to iCloud

1) downgraded it to 8.0 and set as a NEW PHONE

2) Upgraded directly from 8.0 to 8.0.2 and set it as NEW PHONE, and did NOT type my Apple ID yet (selected the option to type in later)

3) Reset all settings just to make sure

4) turned off ALL services I didn't want (bluetooth, localization and GPS, ...)

5) checked battery depletion was "acceptable"

6) Reset all settings and erase data

7) Restore it from icloud backup

8) Reset all settings just to make sure

9) turned off ALL services I didn't want (bluetooth, localization and GPS, handoff, ...)

10) checked again and battery depletion was "acceptable"

I hope it work for you, until Apple take some action.

regards

Two iPhone 5s here: one is a Verizon iPhone 5s 64GB used on AT&T. The other one is a factory unlocked iPhone 5s 64GB also used on AT&T.

The Verizon iPhone 5s was first upgraded to iOS 8.0 and then to iOS 8.0.2. I skipped iOS 8.0.1 due to the well reported issues with iOS 8.0.1 (even if they didn't affect phones other than iPhone 6 and 6 Plus).

The unlocked iPhone 5s was upgraded straight from iOS 7.1.2 to iOS 8.0.2.

Both upgrades were done via iTunes (not over-the-air). I didn't restore the iPhones as new even though I had made a backup.

I noticed a dramatic hit on the battery life with the Verizon iPhone 5s. I use this phone for work, and I started noticing how fast its battery is draining. I've been using this phone for almost a year now, so I know that this is not in my head. Just now, I was looking at the screen, which had 7% of battery left, and suddenly, the phone powered down. This is the third time today that the phone needs to be recharged. The previous times it was at 1% when I plugged it in. This has NEVER happened to me before. Even when I spend hours on conference calls, my iPhone 5S lasted through the entire day, and I would only plug it in late at night.

With the unlocked iPhone 5s, I have not noticed any dramatic change in battery life. The unlocked phone belongs to my wife, and I'm tasked with keeping it charged because my wife isn't, so I've been making sure both of our cell phones are charged for many years now. In my empirical opinion, her iPhone 5s battery lasts as long as it used to on iOS 7.1.2.

So, either this is related to the CDMA chip in iPhone 5s (Verizon) draining the battery, or this has something to do with the fact that I upgraded to iOS 8.0.2 from iOS 8.0 on the Verizon iPhone 5s. By the way, I didn't notice any significant hit on battery life while I was on iOS 8.0 with this Verizon iPhone 5s.

--------------

I always scoffed at people complaining about battery life after upgrading to a new iOS version. I always thought that people were making up these things, and it was all in their heads. But this time around, I'm definitely seeing a dramatic worsening of the battery life. I'm thinking about taking my Verizon iPhone 5s to the Apple store for them to check the battery.

Hopefully, Apple is fully aware of this issue and will release a fix quickly.

Hello all:

I too have been suffering this issue since iOS 8.0.2 on my iPhone 5S - but not on my iPhone 4S. Both were updated through iTunes, same as I always do. This was the first time I have ever experienced battery issues personally; I've read about them on happening to others with every previous release - but it has never been my experience until now.

My iPhone 5S was heating up and drinking battery like there's no tomorrow - sometimes even leaving it plugged in to charge overnight wouldn't get it to 100%.

I had searched the forums to no avail. I'd tried resetting and restoring from a backup through iTunes - to no avail. I was resigned that only an iOS update would resolve this, but was worried that the issue didn't appear to be reported widely enough for it to get the attention I had hoped.

So - I started diving into another issue I had noticed on the phone: my calendars didn't seem to be updating.

***IMPORTANT BITS***

Looking in my settings, I found my calendars and contacts were still attempting to sync through an Exchange connection - a legacy of using Google Apps on the device. Turning off calendar and contact sync in this Exchange account (I didn't delete the account yet), and enabling them in my Google account on the phone instead restored syncing.

Hurrah - this problem, at least, was now resolved.

But here's the thing: since doing this, my battery problems appear to have been resolved too.

***END OF IMPORTANT BITS***

I last charged my phone to 100% yesterday afternoon - about 19 hours ago. Since that time, I've watched about two hours of video, listened to an hour of audio playback, and been in places with no mobile reception.

And I still have 59% battery left - probably about where I would have expected it to be pre-iOS 8.0.2.

I have made no other changes at all. I've even since re-enabled the calendar and contact syncing in the Exchange account as a trial - but the phone hasn't heated up or eaten all my battery.

So far, this has worked for me - though only time will tell. I hope this might help someone else too!

Thank you, MoisiePants. I have an exchange account I use for work, so I cannot delete it completely or stop using it altogether. But, I will try turning the Exchange account off in the evening (after I finish up my work for the day) to see if the battery drains normally like it used to, or if the issue persists. I have tried most of the suggestions mentioned on this site, but nothing has helped. I even downloaded Battery Doctor. Although I like the app a lot, my battery is still draining much faster than normal.

I was at the Genius Bar this morning and they found no problem. Their only suggestion was that I not use phone with less than three bars and I not play solitaire. They ran their diagnostic tests and found nothing. They found nothing to turn off that I hadn't already turned off. They suggested I come back in a few days. Ridiculous. There is a problem as the others on this thread can attest.

In my original post yesterday (or was it two days ago?I noted that I too had this problem. However, AT&T provided me with a solution that worked for me. They suggested that (after making sure I had a backup of the phone) after plugging the phone into a power source, I go to Settings/General/Reset and reset the phone. I did so and the phone reset itself back to its factory state, my backup downloaded and reinstalled itself. The phone is now working without the battery drain.

On a chat dialog with Apple this morning, the tech noticed that my usage and standby times were identical. So obviously something had been running continuously, thus draining the battery. The usage report now is normal. If you don't know where to find it, it is at Settings/General/Usage/Battery Usage. This will give you the time since the last full charge of actual usage and standby time. It will also tell you what percentage of usage has been consumed by each app.

I don't know if this helps others but I hope so.

iPhone 5S - have the same problem with iOS 8.0.2

closed all apps and all background activity, still battery dead in couple of hours - so badly that cannot set the alarm for the morning because battery is dead in the middle of the night !

Problem seems to be linked with problem on the MAIL-app : I cannot access my mail anymore, the app doesn't open anymore but crashes right back to the home screen. Deleting the mail account and re-setting does nothing.

Upon checking battery usage in Settings, stats say that most of the battery life has gone to MAIL however have not been able to use mail anymore - which is as big a nuisance as the draining battery

A couple days ago, I restored my iPhone 5S to factory default and then restored from the backup made right before this.

This process definitely improved the battery life - significantly. It may still not be where it was on iOS 7, but it's decent now. The iPhone no longer shuts off at 7% like it started doing on iOS 8.0.2 before I did the restore.
