iPhone 6 plus crashes when I download, update or delete any apps

I just got my iPhone 6 plus 128 gb (iOS 8.0.2) on Friday (9/26/14) I started it as a new phone and used it for a day and it all worked fine as far as I could tell (there weren't many apps I tried, but the couple I downloaded to test seemed to work out). I backed up my iPhone 5s 64 gb and then restored the new phone to that backup and have had nothing but problems since. Every time I download, update or delete any app the phone crashes. The white apple appears and it takes a few minutes for it to turn back on. I have repeated this error at least 50 times now and it happens every time. Sometimes it will crash if I try to do too many things in too short a period of time as well. I understand that this is a new phone and a new version of the operating system and glitches are to be expected. I'm not looking to complain so much as I am just looking for some hope that this can be resolved. I have read of similar issues and the consensus seems to be that I will have to start over as a new device and download the apps individually from scratch. This is really not a great option for me though. This is my 5th iPhone (6th if you count the 5s and ran through the washing machine in February) and I have a lot of information saved from over the years that I don't really want to lose. I have already tried re-restoring it from the backup and it's the same result. I don't know, maybe they'll fix it with another update. fingers crossed.

So, last night (9/29/14), after my phone and crashed another 20 plus times, through the repeatable glitch that I kept having to show everyone I know, I backed up the phone and restored it from the backup. After the restore it spent the next several hours switching from a black screen with a white apple to a white screen with a black apple to a black screen to a white screen. Sometimes the screens would show the battery life and sometimes they would show pass code pad (it was unresponsive to tough, btw). I then tried to restore it several more times, but that didn't work. This morning I restarted it as a new phone and everything looked normal. I then tried to restore it from the backup. It went through the restore process and everything seemed okay. I had to leave the phone to come to work because it was in the process of copying 1013 apps onto the device. I'll let you know if this works out when I get home.

Ok, I got home from work and the restore did work and now I can use the phone without it constantly blinking and beeping at me, but I am back to my original problem of it crashing every time I update, download or delete any apps. It also continues to crash if I do too many things too quickly and for some reason it won't let me change my wallpaper. I can't help but think that this is a software compatibility issue between my 5s backup and my 6 plus, but I can't be sure that that is the problem. The phone could possibly be defective. I don't know. I have read of issues where people's 6 plus are crashing and flashing red and/or blue screens, but I haven't seen anything like that yet. hopefully 8.1 will offer some help. I'm going to try to avoid calling the geniuses until I know that they have phones in stock, but I don't know if I can make it that long. Might have to downgrade to the 6. I don't really want a refurbished phone either. I got a 5s refurb this year and it seemed to not work quite as well as the original 5s that I bought on release day. I could also be paranoid. This has been a trying experience, but things could always be worse I suppose.

Hi,

no doubt.

It´s definitly not a hardware problem.

I have exactly the same, really the same, issues with my 6 plus as you have.

I also had a 5s before.

In my opinion it´s a problem with the iOS 8 and a lot of Apps and Widgets that are not optimised for iOS 8 and the 6 plus.

I guess the problem is somewhere in the multitasking, the background activities and optical adjustments.

So in the banners and in the notification center the 6 plus do not display smileys when I got messages.

But when I open the apps the smileys are displayed correctly there.

So, I hope that updates of the apps, the widgets and the iOS will solve the problems.

Since I have begun to use my iPhone on this morning (now it´s evening in Germany) the device has crashed 5 times in 10 hours.

I imagine that the system runs more stable when the device has "acclimated" that your now in WIFI or in mobile network.

Maybe the problem is due with the known issues with the wireless connections.

I just got off the phone with Apple....

First, I have a iPhone 6 Plus 128gig on ATT in the USA...

Second, since the 8.02 update i have crashed over 30 times with either blue or red screen and then returning to main screen...

Third, I have restored from iCloud (no success), restored from iTunes (no success), and finally reset as new (still crashes sporadically).

Fourth, the Apple customer service rep said she had not heard of this issue and transferred me to a senior advisor.

Fifth, the senior advisor relayed a message thru customer service. The problem is hardware related and they will FEDEX a replacement to me in 2 days. There is a $30 shipping fee and my AMEX will have a $949 hold on it until I return the damaged phone.

Lastly, I am deeply frustrated but relieved that the issue is resolved and that it is not going to be a continuous software issue.

Hope this is informative for you all....

I'm so happy that I'm not alone. People are starting to accuse me of being the problem. Everyone I know has the regular 6 though, and it doesn't seem to be affecting them. I am using my phone now and just being patient every time it crashes. It's annoying and inconvenient, but hopefully it will get better as things get updated. I also had a thought that possibly having too many apps was causing the problem, but after reading the link you posted I don't think that is the issue. I did delete 40 gb of apps off my phone though. I had to delete them one at a time because the phone crashed after every app that was deleted. I'm down to 985 apps. I know that is too many. I have a problem.

Oct 1, 2014 1:14 PM in response to eeyack

Haha, no you are definitely not alone.

Sorry, but now it was the tenth day with the new device and am so frustrated about all these issues that I have had to laugh about that.

I know such issues on jailbroken devices. So that's also a reason because I guess that there are a lot of software conflicts.

Surely there are a lot of issues on every device that runs iOS 8. But it seems that there are more and bigger issues how newer the device is. And the special display size and resolution of the 6 plus seem to be another reason.

I also have some network issues on my iPad Air.

And I have 882 apps installed and some new widgets on the 6 plus. So there is a lot potential of creating conflicts.

Well I pray that Updates will bring the solution.

Oct 2, 2014 7:53 AM in response to urikxxx

Yes. There is a solution approach.

To select zoom (Settings/Display&Brightness/View) seems to solve a lot of things. I tested that now for some hours.

And no crashes since then and the smileys are displayed right in the notification center and the banners. It´s not elegant but it helps provisionally.

So it seems to be that what i suspected. The problem is the iOS on the new size and resolution of the display in the 6 plus.

Oct 2, 2014 7:44 PM in response to MarcOliver

This is interesting. I went ahead and switched my display to zoomed (as you suggested) about 8 hours ago and it actually does seem to have helped a bit. It's odd. My phone does still crash, but less often, and I still can't change my wallpaper. No one has sent me any emojis so I haven't been able to test that out in the notification center. Hoping 8.1 will help with this.

Oct 3, 2014 1:44 AM in response to eeyack

Yes, it´s just a makeshift. It seems that it´s helping.

My 6 plus do not crash since 18 hours now. Okay, I had slept 7 hours and in this time the phone was only charging and receive push notifications.

In the course of this I noticed that the automatically iCloud backup worked again in the night. The days before I had to start the backup manually.

Changing wallpapers by selecting from the system folder do not work furthermore.

But changing wallpapers by selecting pictures from own folders works. So I have exported the system wallpapers and put them in e new iCloud folder an so I am able to change.

To test the emojis in notification center you could send simply an iMessage in the message app to your own phone number. And during sending just lock the phone and then you can see.

It is always the same conclusion: an iOS Update should help really so everybody can use alle the features of iOS 8.

WOW! I too have a Plus 128GB on ATT, my wife has the same thing but on Sprint. Her phone does not crash, and she laughs at me because since last night I am ready to throw this thing out the Window.

My 5s crashed a little last year, but this was as buggy as an "Android" phone! I am very upset and as I read these posts "I feel your pain" I spend a lot of money because I believe in Apple and it's products but I feel like a beta tester.

I have been using the phone for the last week and it would crash 1-2 times a day at the least... but then last night I made the "big mistake" of changing my wallpapers and OMG, they phone was more fragile than a freshman's ego on the first day of HS. I then was drawn to the forums. It was so bad that when I try to update apps or select a wallpaper, BOOM the Apple logo and 1 min of button pushing and frustration as the phone crashed!

So then I read MarcOliver's post above and I selected "Zoom", and I got one more Apple crash just after I set the preferences... then after that beautiful rock-solid iPhone performance... I played with wallpapers and downloaded an app update and yes! My baby is back!

If you are reading this and you have NOT changed your display to ZOOM, do it NOW! You will thank yourself.v😝

It is not a hardware bug, let me explain why this is software and it is unique to the plus, read one if you want to know WHY this has failed and WHY Apple shoutd hire old guys like me for testing their products.

The iPhone Plus actually does some "behind the scenes" graphic rendering to make the big, beautiful display work. It renders (draws in memory) the graphics at a higher resolution, then downsizes them to fit on the screen. See link below for more information than you ever wanted to know about it:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/25755443/iphone-6-plus-resolution-confusion-x code-or-apples-website-for-development

There is actually special processing build into the 6P for this to happen, add to this confusion by developers and the whole "Zoom" thing and I believe that when you use the normal setting, it is worse (which I would think is funny, if anything I would think zoom would be worse) maybe this is due to the zoom being closer to the real rendered size of the graphics? Not sure, but all I know is my iPhone works now after changing that setting.

I did not have to do ANY of the following, yea!:

1) Exchange the hardware cause I would have to wait a month for that

2) Start from scratch and lose all of my 800+ apps that I like to have sitting on my phone because I am a packrat

3) Remove support for my Pebble watch, because I love using it (Until the AWatch comes out)

I remember now a week ago when I was setting up the iPhone for the first time... I had to choose between "normal" and "zoom" and I chose normal, it CRASHED. If I had just choose zoom, I would have had more hair left from the last week.

The weird thing is my wife's Plus does not have this problem, she has exactly the same model (128gb), just the Sprint version (So crappy LTE performance) and of course no Pebble, I was so ready to blame that! But now I don't have to, thank you!

One more thing... LOL! 😉

When you have the phone on zoom, you will loose the special things on the Plus display:

1) The special sideways mail reading view will not work.

2) The view where you see your home screen on its side will not work either, it will stay locked in the portrait mode.

But at least your phone will not crash! I will just wait now in "Zoom" mode until the next iOS update hopefully fixes this. 😎

Oct 3, 2014 2:49 PM in response to BigDave469

Hey BigDave, you say all that for what I have had no words.

Since I used 'zoom ' the iOS did not crash for more than 24 hour.

But I noticed that the display of pushs on the lockscreen was more and more less correctly hour after hour.

And the system became less stable.

So this is an argument for the theory of the rendering.

I noticed also that the white Apple Crash happens sometimes again when I want to use widgets in NC.

Another big bug.

So, still waiting for the iOS Update.

And yes, I'm feeling like a Beta-Tester too. ^^

A Device for 1000€ should work fine and smooth.

Apple seems to have problems with their Release Candidates.

The GM of Yosemite is also less stable as the Beta 8.

Something goes very wrong.
