Music-Artists on iOS 8.0.2 - alphabet scroll

I'm on the iPhone 6, working with iOS 8.0.2. I have a minor issue with music app that I've never run into before. When I go to Artists, and I use the alphabet scroller on the right side of the page, I can't touch any letter before V. When I hit V, the first artist that appears is Arcade Fire, then goes through the rest of my A artists. When I hit any letter W or later, it works properly. All my music is there, and I can manually scroll through the list, but the alphabet scrolling saves a lot of time. Further, the alphabet scrolling works properly when I look at any other subsection of music, such as Albums. Already tried resetting my phone, any suggestions as to what I should do now?

Here's an update of troubleshooting I've done; brought my iPhone to the genius bar so they knew I wasn't crazy; they reset my iphone settings (not a restore) with no luck; they convinced me there was a glitch with my iTunes backup from my 4S that I used to restore the the new iPhone 6, so I went through the several hour process and restored my iPhone to factory defaults and sync'd in my music as if it were a brand new phone (didn't restore from backup). The issue STILL persists which leads me to believe one of two things: 1) There's a bug in the iTunes/iPhone 6 syncing process or 2)There's a hardware issue with my iPhone. I REALLY hope it's the former and that it's something that can be fixed in an iTunes/iOS update.

FWIW, my iPhone 6 was set up as a new device. I don't think it's a backup issue.

I don't think it can be a hardware issue because I can alphabetically scroll Albums, Songs, and Compilations.

The categories that do not scroll properly are Artists, Composers, and Genres. They jump from A to U or V.

All other apps on the phone scroll just fine.

It could be an issue with song quantity(?) I have 22,240 songs synced.

The Music app is also very laggy in the categories that do scroll properly. Albums and Songs, for instance, stutters every time I scroll the titles (not the alphabet.)

When scrolling and selecting songs to play, the songs take at least 3 seconds to begin playing.

I'm wondering if the iPhone 6 and or the Music app is not designed for large libraries.

It's very annoying.

"I'm wondering if the iPhone 6 and or the Music app is not designed for large libraries." That would be incredibly annoying as that is the whole reason I spent the extra money on the 128 GB iPhone. In any case, here's another update: spoke with AppleCare yesterday over the phone; they think it's a hardware issue because they can't replicate the problem on their end, and because the restore to factory defaults and re-import of music did not solve the issue. They're sending me a replacement phone, which I intend to set up as new. I'll provide an update on that once I have new info to provide.

So here's my latest update: received a new iPhone 6, set it up as new, upgraded iOS 8.0.2, and sync'd my music. I am STILL having the same issue as it pertains to scrolling music via the alphabet on the right side of the screen. Now I know it is not a hardware issue and there is something wrong with either iOS 8 or how iTunes syncs music. Very frustrating to say the least; I will be speaking with AppleCare this weekend about this, and will keep you updated with any new information

Had the same problem. Then I saw that there was actually one artist among my "A..." artists that started with an A, but it was listed in the "V" column which only consisted of this one artist and was right between the "A"s.

It's kind of hard to explain, just scroll manually through your artists and check if everything is listed properly. When I deleted that one odd artist from my library the bug was fixed and I could use the alphabetic scrolling again!

I noticed that as well with a "K" artist showing up under "A" because of a collaboration with an "A" artist. It was even an issue on my computer. I wonder if that is due to the new iTunes in sorting artists or an update in iTunes match adding the collaborator or something?

Just corrected it in iTunes to remove the other artists and synced my phone... it worked! Scrolls as it should!

Check your tagging in iTunes. Specifically, for the "Ann Wilson & Mike Reno" track:

  • Check your "Album Artist" entry, you should have something entered (if not, that may be an issue that reveals an iOS bug like this). For a track like this, you might use "Ann Wilson", "Mike Reno", or "Ann Wilson & Mike Reno" depending on your preference.
  • See if you have this tagged as "Part of a Compilation", it shouldn't be.
