Jaybird Bluebuds Disconnecting

Anyone else having problems with Jaybird bluebirds?

I am having a problem maintaining a connection between my Bluebuds and an iPhone 6 plus running 8.0.2. It works fine for a few minutes but then the buds disconnect and I have to press the select button for reconnection. I don't seem to have the problem with an iPad Air running 8.02. I've tried forgetting the device and repairing, and resetting all settings.

Yep, I'm having the same issue specifically with iPhone 6 and the BlueBuds. I've found they work fine on iPhone 5S with 8.0.2 and with iPad Air on 8.0.2, but disconnect constantly on iPhone 6 on 8.0 or 8.0.2. I've also found that the iPhone 6 doesn't have any issues disconnecting from other Bluetooth headphones. Something specific with the iPhone 6 and the BlueBuds. I opened up a case with Apple Support and sent some diagnostics to Apple, and they are seeing the Bluetooth stack crash constantly, but we've not yet been able to determine if the issue is software or hardware or related. One thing I've found though is that doing a full Reset of Network Settings from iOS causes the problem to go away, at least for awhile. I'm still troubleshooting and trying to root cause.

I have several other Bluetooth devices around which might be also contributing to issues, such as Tile devices (extremely buggy and a definitely a possible factor), a Fitbit, a Pebble watch, other Bluetooth Mac and iDevices, et cetera. Still removing things and testing.

Alric,

I wanted to post an update to let you know a couple things I've found.

1) iOS 8 has had several BLE issues, and some specific to iPhone 6/6Plus, that are supposed to be fixed by iOS 8.1, of which a beta is reportedly currently being tested by developers and seems to resolve many issues (I have not tested this).

2) My issues seemed to have been mostly caused by using Tiles, and have been much improved by totally deleting the Tile App and removing their connections, in addition to doing a full reset of the Network (and thus Bluetooth) stack. Tile has come out with a public post discussing the issue (http://tiletogether.tumblr.com/post/98176762602/iphone-6-connectivity-updated-10 -5-2014), and due to the way they were architected, the issue can only be fixed by replacing the hardware altogether or waiting for iOS 8.1.

Were you able to sort out your issues? Did you remove all other Bluetooth devices and reset your Bluetooth stack?

I had reset network, and all settings and continued to have issues. However you mentioned Tiles which is another BT device. Interesting because I do own a Pebble watch. I disconnected the watch today by turning BT off on the watch and I haven't had a single disconnect from the Bluebuds all day.

Seems like the current BT stack has trouble with more than one connection? Hopefully this will be fixed with 8.1.

I received the following response from Jaybird. I still don't understand why this was never a problem with the 5 or 5s.

The Bluebuds X are not true multi-point connection capable so you could experience interference when sharing a connection with other devices.

For iPhone and other smart phones, Applications running at the same time you are using bluetooth, can spread the capabilities of the phone thin and will cause frequent disconnects as well. Turning on airplane mode may help eliminate audio interference between the device and an accessory. Reorienting or relocating the phone and the connected accessory can also improve wireless performance. In most situations, deleting the profile and reconnecting them will normally cure any minor cutouts or software issues.
Bluebuds X antenna is located in the right ear bud and the bluetooth profile should be good enough to prevent skipping, but line of sight still can affect range. JayBird recommends the use of armbands for your music device to keep the device and Bluetooth adapter within optimal range and separated from your skin during workouts. Positioning your hand on the wrong spot of the iPhone or other cellular phones may cause signal drop out/reception issues. Sweat and moisture in this area, may also cause the signal to be blocked.

If you lose controls when you update to 8.1, follow these steps;
Delete the profile from your devices bluetooth list then power the phone off completely and let it sit for 30 seconds. Once you power the phone back on, reconnect the headphones and it will restore any functions that were lost once the update was complete.

Let us know if there is anything else we can assist with and we will be more than happy to help however possible.

Take care and thank you for contacting Jaybird support.

Darn it -- I installed iOS 8.1 today, AND the new Pebble 2.7 firmware, removed and re-connected all bluetooth devices and, unfortunately, the bluebuds X keep dropping again... Ugh.... I may have to give up on them and hunt for new buds... in the meantime, I guess I'll just put my pebble in airplane mode if I want to avoid drops...

It seems you are all having slightly better luck than me. I can't even get my iPhone 6 to find my Bluebuds... it just continues to search for devices and never finds anything. I was running iOS 8.0.2, just updated to iOS 8.1. After updating to iOS 8.1 I was finally able to connect to my car and my surround sound system via Bluetooth, but still no luck with the Bluebuds.

I'm not sure if it was a fluke or what but I was finally able to pair my bluebuds with my iPhone 6 running iOS 8.1. I turned the phone off, turned the phone on, turned on bluetooth, then held the power button on the bluebuds for several seconds after the 'power on' message and there was a voice prompt about the bluebuds pairing with the phone... and the bluebuds finally showed up on my devices list on the phone. Luckily I haven't had any issues with them disconnecting or dropping out like previous posters.
