Carplay not working properly with Siri

Installed a Pioneer AVH 4000-NEX in my car & updated with the Apple Carplay on Oct 4th. At first everything seemed to be working fine but then I realized that Siri is not working properly: when I say ‘Hey Siri’ I can see the screen with the microphone & the message saying ‘How can I help’ displayed but when I ask her to do something nothing happens and the session is terminated. Felt like Siri didn’t like what I said & decided to just ignores me… I guess married guys can relate 🙂Sometimes she does respond back by saying 'Hey (my name)’! instead of asking ‘how can I help?’ and then goes back to sleep which makes things frustrating but funny at the same time. Occasionally, she does respond (I’d say 2 out of 10 times).

I called Apple support & the lady said it’s expected to have bugs with a new release but couldn’t specify if it’s IOS 8 related or just Carplay. I guess we’d have to make our voices heard in order for Apple to notice that problem & fix it so please join this conversation if you have similar problem

PS: I’m using iPhone 6

Hey guys,

After spending hours with Apple support on the phone trying to troubleshoot this issue, the gentleman I was talking to today suggested I go on Pioneer website & check if there’s any update to the Carplay firmware & sure enough there’s 1 that was released just today so who’s going to be the first one to do it??

I couldn’t find any SD or USB card at home so I’ll have to wait till tomorrow to do the update but if any of you managed to do it earlier please let us know

I've tried the update a few times now, but I keep getting an error message saying to make sure there isn't anything else on my usb key. I've double checked and there isn't anything else on it. Does anyone have any ideas on what I could be doing wrong?

I am using a very cheap USB key that I got as a free giveaway, so maybe that's why it's not working? Although, I have used it for other things successfully in the past.

Has anyone been able to do this latest update?

Had no problem performing the update using an SD card on my 4000NEX. Worked like a champ.

I'd verify...

  1. You have the folder of files at the root (top) level of the SC card and didn't accidentally copy all the files to the root / top level without the folder
  2. The SD card is formatted using FAT - even if you are on a Mac you can format the SD card as FAT

Hey, thanks for the tips! I did do all that you suggested, but still no luck.

I'm actually at the place that installed my Pioneer 8000 NEX and they are saying it didn't work because I used a Mac to put the update on my USB/SD card. Not sure about that as I've seen these updates done on YouTube where they used a Mac.

They are going to do the update for me, so I'll wait and see what happens.

I can assure you that using a Mac works fine - as long as the media is formatted using FAT. I updated my NEX4000 using media formatted with a MacBook Pro and it went fine.

Sounds like your media was formatted using something other than FAT on the Mac. Disk Utility will allow you to format a compatible piece of media using FAT.

Well the only thing I had at work was a USB drive and I didn't have time at lunch to run by Best Buy, so I copied the folder to an empty USB drive (the folder that is created when the zip file is run must be in the root, not the files it contains.) and the upgrade was smooth as silk. Unfortunately, other than Spotify working a little better (in other word I got one thing to play) I don't see any improvements. Siri behaves exactly the same way in my car.

I'll try to document my experience a little more thoroughly in the next day or two and perhaps we can find enough similarities in our bugs to get Pioneer's (or Apple's) attention.

On another note, I did use Apple Pay at McDonald's a while ago and it worked perfectly.

Well, the place that originally installed my Pioneer put the update on my USB using a PC and I updated the firmware myself and everything worked fine.

Although I obviously must have done something wrong when I tried to put the update on my USB, I have no idea what that could be. I followed a video on YouTube and had formatted the drive to MS-DOS (FAT). 1 partition. I'm at a loss for as to what I missed or did wrong.

Hope I can figure it out for the next update.

OK guys so the update went well for me (1 note on that: make sure whether you’re using a USB key or an SD card to format then to FAT before you download the firmware update from Pioneer’s website) and I’m happy to report that Siri is working as it should be: I tried more than 20 commands & most of them went through as long as I said the whole thing without any pause. For example ‘Hey Siri play songs’ as opposed to ‘Hey Siri’ ..wait for feedback tone then.. ‘Play songs’. If I Pause in between she’ll miss out on the command. I tried a succession of commands without any pause & they all went through. So basically she works just like when your iPhone is plugged into power at home.

Let me know how it’s working for you & we can close this discussion if it’s all good

I guess we can close the thread on YOUR 4000, but mine is still just about as buggy as ever. I thought since I drive a truck it might be the mic and vibrations that I was unable to hear, so last night I sat in my drive with the ignition on and still had problems. Most all of the time if I just say "Hey Siri", I get the mic icon, no sine wave, then the lower clunk tone that signifies it's through listening and it goes back to now playing. Before the update I could press the mic icon and get the sine wave. Now I can't do that.

I noticed before the update that if I said "Hey Siri" a second time while the mic icon was showing I would get the sine wave. Then if I waited a second for the higher clunk tone I could say a command. But by golly I'd better say it fast and not stumble because she will cut my *** off at the pass! Same is true of composing a text message. I need to have it on a teleprompter and not pause for a nanosecond or she asks if I'm ready to send it.

Rdio is working, but it's buggy. Spotify is finally working a little better. But in my humble opinion if you have Siri working even acceptably you are doing something different that we haven't yet put our thumb on.

Before I upgraded the unit in my Tundra I pulled it out and put brand new high-quality USB extension in both USB-1 and USB-2 and I'm using a brand new iPhone 6. So all I can say is, between Windows 8 and iOS 8, I think we need to go to a base 9 number system when it comes to software releases.

But all kidding aside, I would like to see us have a thread for NEX users somewhere. I think it's very helpful. And if you have any suggestions please pass them on. I cannot think of a single thing I could do differently. Maybe caress the mic as I say "Hey, Siri..."

+ 1

I am having the exact same issue with "Hey Siri" as you are. I have not gone as far as trying "Hey Siri" a second time but I will experiment with that myself.

So, unless this is an issue with the 4000NEX (which I also have), if others are getting this to work, I'd love to know what they are doing that we are not.

I thought I read somewhere else that if you ignore the high / low clunk from Siri and simply say "Hey Siri <insert request here>" that it works but I have not verified that yet - but will on my way home from work tonight.

And Hey Siri works about as well as I would expect it to via Bluetooth. It is only when it is plugged in via CarPlay that it acts as you described above.

I tried speaking the command immediately after saying HS (tired of typing Hey Siri) to no avail. It just sat there and then did it's spit in the bucket sound as though it was spitting in my eye. I have noticed that it does seem to listen at some point before the clunk sound, but only after the sine wave appears, at least in my experience.

I have to say I'm really disappointed in Carplay so far. Who knows if its' Apple or Pioneer. Neither of them will admit they have a problem. But My NEX worked just as well for playing music before I had the firmware update.

For me the only promising development is the speed with which Pioneer upgraded the firmware. Of course for most of us it didn't seem to make much difference, but at least they're trying.

Let's all stay in touch. Maybe by comparing our experiences we will find a common denominator and figure out how to make this a usable product. At this point it's a dangerous product in my opinion. Very, VERY distracting at 70mph when you have to watch for a sine wave and then look at your teleprompter. :-)
