My Epson XP-710 Series, printer/scanner: I can see the drivers but not the software - where is it?

Just bought the above. When I read the instructions, it tells me to go to Applications, and click on the software. All I have in Applications is the driver. I cannot see what Epson says I should have, ie, colourful screens to use. I downloaded the drivers from Apple, as Epson was !!!!! Any ideas anyone? Trying to scan an application form to see if I can fill-in as opposed to using my pen. I can't even find out if I can do this. Help.

Drivers don't normally reside in "Applications." Did you drag something there and not install it?

The Epson drivers available from Apple are just the drivers, not the Scan Utility.

And normally, you don't need to download the "drivers" from Apple - they get auto-installed when you add the printer in Print & Scan prefs.

Can you give us more info - did you download the Scan driver and Scan Utility from Epson and install them, for example?

Have you tried scanning using Image Capture?

Moved the app to Trash and reinstalled via '+' in System Preferences, Printer and Scanners. So far so good, but ...

I wonder did it uninstall? Does it matter?

'Epson XP-710 Series.app' went automatically to: Library/Printers. i click on it and it takes me to scanning; but is not the all singing and dancing thing that Epson shows me it should be on their site. It will scan but then I cannot find it, even though I tell it where to scan to. What is image capture? This may be the all singing thingy that Epson go on about. But why did it not download automatically? I must be missing something, but what. Any ideas? PS, i can go into epson connect and see my info on my mbp, but nowt else. And the printer itself, shows I can scan, but then just comes up with usb. eh! Help appreciated.

Hi Greg and Bratman91

I am now losing my sanity over this darned machine. I have now done as follows: 'EPSONPrintDriver2.18.dmg' for OS X Mavericks was downloaded from Apple. I clicked on this in Downloads & then this led to 'EPSONPrinterDrivers.pkg' opening, which led on to installing the Epson Printer Software. Apparently as per Epson and Apple I should not be having such a hard time. Yes sure! I gave up on the disc that came with the printer; Apple does say this though. I did as described but to be honest printing and scanning does not have the look of WOW. It all looks grey/brown and drab. Epson web makes it look so wonderful and easy. I may not have needed to download the 2 as described; any ideas? Maybe just one would suffice?

Re: image capture. I though this was from Epson, but apparently it is from Apple. I use this icon to access scanning, but it is so laborious. It takes a while after clicking the Epson icon within it, for scanning to start. If this is the Apple option, can't I use the Epson option (if there is one). I can go into Printers and Scanners in my mbp and I see the same. Is image capture the same as scanning via Printers and Scanners? So many Qs; sorry.

Any idea how I can print in draft? This comes in handy sometimes, but when I do see the slider which looks likes I can move said slider, it won't ever slide to draft, no matter what type of paper I chose, eg, photo, plain paper etc. Any ideas? The opportunity exists with the slider, but it won't stay on drafts. Thanks in anticipation of any further advice. Helen

The following comments are based on an Epson Photo Stylus RX-700 All-in-One. The scanning app that you get when you download from Apple is pretty well the same as Image Capture and is not as good as the original Epson scanning software for this device but which is for Windows. I could neve find any Epson scanning software that would work on Mavericks.

I have now installed an Epson XP-710 and followed all the steps in epson.support.net/setupnavi to set it up. This installed the Epson scanning app without problem, and also provided some manuals for this machine. My Epson DID NOT come with any disk so I had no alternative but to go to the epson.support.net site to install the software. Now, I get the choice of using either the Epson scanning app or the one that Apple provides (or perhaps provided with my old Epson RX-700). Did you try using the epson.support.net/setupnavi route rather than downlaod from Apple?

The printing from the XP-710 is excellent, as is copying. I haven't done much scanning but the little I have done seems pretty good, but time may tell a different story. I chose the Epson XP-710 because it had received very good reviews and a lot of functionality, so I don't know whay you are getting poor printing and scanning results. As for draft prints, I have no idea if these are possible or not. However, the manual for the XP-710 says that in "Print Photos Mode" there are three qualities that can be selected - Draft, Standard and Best (and Draft is not available in Belgium!). This is the only refernce to "Draft" in the manual so I surmise that normal prints of documents etc cannot be done as drafts.

Is this different to 'EPSONPrintDriver2.18.dmg' for OS X Mavericks (downloaded from Apple)? When I click on this in Downloads I am taken to 'EPSONPrinterDrivers.pkg', which will lead me to installing the Epson Printer Software.

Stupid Q really. It must be different. Should I delete the 2.18 above and replace with 3.7.6.3? Where will I find it? I don't get too much success with the Epson website.

Helen,

I am very sorry but I gave you an incorrect URL for setting up your Epson - it should have been:

support.epson.net\setupnavi

If you follow this URL step by step, you will download all the required software and utilities. Note the little icon (Epson.com) at the bottom left of one of the pages as this takes you, eventually, to a page where you can download the latest version of the Epson Scan Utility (version 4.0.0.0.1EN). Also, the file you have quoted (EPSONPrintDriver2.18.dmg) has been superseded by 2.2. When I followed step by step the instructions in the above URL, the Epson Scan Utility ended up in a folder called "Epson Software" in the Applications folder. Try a search using Spotlight for "Epson Scan" to see if you have already installed this or perhaps an earlier version. If you see it in Spotlight, highlight it and press Command i to see where it is. Taking the route of the URL also downloads the manual for the Epson, plus things like Print CD, Software Updater and Easy Photo Print. You might not want these but they are there if you do,

An additional comment: the URL route gives you a utility called "Epson Scan Settings" and my recollection is that, if you want to use the Epson Scan Utility (once you have installed it - think positive) you have to use the Epson Scan Settings utility to add your printer to it. Thus, go down the URL route - it may have more steps but it does get you all the way there.
