iPhone 5 iOS 8.0.2:Trashcan missing to delete iMessages or SMS. Camera replaces trashcan on left corner.If restart, works once, then trashcan replaced by camera. Problem began after update.

Thanks. It fixed part of the problem. The trash can no longer disappears. However, after a while the message box freezes so that when I try tap on a message nothing happens and I have to close messages and reopen. Better but still needs more fixing!

Thank you, pmfromchi! I tried all the other "fixes" but nothing worked. This worked the first time I tried it. It is the only way I can delete individual text messages on my phone.

HI. Try downloading the newest software update . It has pretty much fixed the problem although occasionally the messages freeze and then you need to open and close. But deleting individual messages working much better.

UGH! Apple supposedly fixed this problem with the new update. It did indeed fix it but only briefly. Now I am back to square one - the trash can keeps disappearing and the only way to delete individual messages is to close and reopen messages.

Apple needs to fix this!
