I realize that there is no fix for this issue but I wanted to contribute some interesting stuff I saw and maybe somebody can determine whether it is relevant to our problem.

I have three devices. Two of which have this problem:

  • iPhone 5S - iOS 7.0.6 - Has the issue
  • iPad 3 - iOS 7.1 - Does not have the issue
  • iPad 2 - iOS 7.0.6 - This device had no charge. Battery ran out over the last week or so and when I plugged it in and it powered up I saw that I had multiple Apps that required an update. Went into the App Store App and Update All was not grayed out. I tapped on Update All and then went into another App. Seconds later, I went back into the App Store App and Update All was now grayed out and all the Apps individually show the Update button that launches the Application as described in this thread. I have now set this device to update Apps automatically. I have not done that with my iPhone 5S

I don't know the cause of it but I found out that you can update the app by searching the name of the app at the app store, tapping the name of the app so it shows the details of the app, then you will see the open button change to update. tap on it and enter your password or use your touchid. my apps are all updated now. maybe there's just a glitch apple still figuring this out. But hope my reply helps.

Hey guys, the hint from the first page actually helped! The list of apps to be updated started growing dramatically and I got really angry with that. They were also opening instead of updating and "Update all" button was just shaded. Using 5s with 7.0.3

Just tap the app icon, then tap again and you will see an app page with screenshots and "Update" button with a small "+". It will ask for the password and possibly offer to restore the purchase for free.

Agree with all above prompts and this will update your app. Bit annoying process but it works!

My iPad 2 with 7.0.6 also having this problem. But tapping the App icon in the Updates list does nothing. Doesn't bring up the App page or anything. My only option is to Search the app in the App Store and Update from there.

Hi.

I have talked to the apple's technical service and the only thing they told me is to update IOS!!!

I would expect them to say that, but I've already decided my iPad 2 will not be upgraded to iOS 8. Way too many posts of users who find iOS 8 performance on the iPad 2 is simply not acceptable. I'm pretty sure they'll get around to fixing this since 7.0.x is still a supported OS.

Thank you!😁

It worked for me, but there's still something missing... When I open the app store, the apps still show as the need to be updated😕.
Apple needs to take a look at this, because what will happen for those who don't want to update their iOS (like me; 7.0.4).

Exactly the same problem with my iPad, this is really annoying. This must be a general issue and Apple does not seem to care. I never trusted the first few releases of the OS and until now I have been right. I will update in the futurbut not now. I found a kind of workaround by activating the automatic update, the symptoms are always the same (update buttons there and no update all) but the apps do get updated.

Open up a case with Apple or speak to someone on the phone.

If they give you the usual 'have you updated to ios8 ?' once they've finished their terrible service, they'll ask 'were you happy with my answer today ?'

Saying no i wasnt means it'll get logged and hopefully go 'one higher up the chain'

Its pathetic of Apples 'tech' team to basically say try updating to ios8. Its a bug/issue, why cant they just admit it ?

BUT open up a case with them or call them, the more people who do that then something may get done. My love for Apple is getting less every day this ridiculous issue goes on (which they're fobbing us off with crap about updating etc)

Hi All,

I tried this and it worked:

1. From App Store, tap on the name/icon of app rather than tapping on update.

2. App details page will open

3. Tap update on tap right corner and it updates normally as it suppose to.

P.S: All credits goes to my wife as she did this workaround and informed me.

Yep let me know how you get on. I opened another case and it was another case of 'update to ios8'. Just ridiculous, i gave them my reasons why i'm not updating.

When i called the guy said the updates were for ios8 only so thats why it 'opens my app' instead. Thats rubbish as using the method above you can update it. Just a pain

I'm posting to keep this conversation going, with hopes of Apple picking up on this issue.

I have a clean, AT&T locked iPhone 5, running whatever the last iOS 7 was, and I'm having this exact same issue. I am up to 10 apps that need to be updated, the "Update All" button is grayed out and when I try to update the apps individually, I only succeed in opening the app instead.

FYI - for all those posting work-arounds for this issue, while your help IS appreciated, it is nevertheless besides the point. We shell out extra dough for Apple products and, personally, I expect them to work! If I wanted to bothered with a bunch of work-arounds, there are plenty of smartphones on the market that would save me a lot money. I want to hit the "Update All" button, put my iPhone down and finish what I was doing!

^I agree

I'm glad there is a workaround for now but its not ideal and i shouldnt have to be doing this on my expensive iphone

Whats also wound me up a treat is the lack of replies from Apple. I saw on one thread a 'helper' posted a ridiculous link on how to use the app store for updates. In other words they didnt help solve it at all.

I've opened 3 cases, 2 so far are 'have you tried updating to ios8 first ?'. I've had a call with someone which was also useless (And i let Apple know via the feedback form after i had the call).

If ANYONE from Apple just said we know its a problem, we're looking into it i'll be happy. But instead they dont seem to realise theres a bug and come out time and time with 'updated to ios8 first'.

Its embarassing

Hi,

I agree with "RZHTZ5" and "Paul Johns". We all are on same page.

Apple saying "update to ios 8" makes no sense at all. I have iPhone 4 and I can't upgrade to ios 8; but still there are people like me frustrated thinking we cant upgrade apps from app store. That's the only reason I provided work around but I feel this issue should be acknowledged by Apple and should fix the issue ASAP rather than saying "update to ios 8". It's been more than three days and the issue still remains open.
