apps won't update. When I click "update" it just opens the app. Also, "update all" option is unavailable (grey) iphone 5

That didn't work for me, either. But I noticed one thing which corroborates my earlier findings. Since I have automatic update on, all my apps are updated and under a heading saying "Updated October 14, 2014." Notice the past tense. And all the apps still have an "Update" button instead of "Open" button. "Update All" is no where to be found, not even grayed out. So at least for me, it is doing its job and updating the apps. The UI is just wonky.

well, if that update status is bothering you, at least I found a way to get rid of it...

First you have to close appstore. Set the date to at least a month in the future

open appstore and it probably say that all your apps are up to date.

close appstore and go back to settings and set the date back to automatically

It works for me, for now...

The response i got from Apple was to contact APPLECARE, which I don't have. No acknowledgement that there is a problem. Basically, as expected, the blew me off.

Wait...I thought that Apple was supposed to be the Best Corporation in the World. 😉

Contact AppleCare? What in the world would they have anything to do with this problem?!!

I have this same issue on my iPad ver 7.0.6. 'Update All' is grayed out, 'Update' causes the app to open instead of downloading and installing the update.

My iPhone ver 7.1 is able to update apps without any issue.

Same issue. Iphone5s ios7.0.6. it's ok if some apps have built-in update functionality i can go with that but unfortunately some apps don't even have that...

I'm having this same problem on my iPad 2 running 7.0.6. But really I'm not losing any sleep over it. Here's why.

99% of the updates the past month seem to be for iOS 8 compatibility. Given that those of us having this issue are running some version of iOS 7.0.x, these updates aren't for us anyway. And for that rare update these days that actually has some useful added functionality, there are plenty of workarounds posted in this thread to get that update.

Geez, why are you giving Dave a bad time for saying "Cheers?" He's just being polite and friendly. It's not his fault we have this problem. Go grump at Apple, not him. I'm with Dave--I'm not losing any sleep over this. I have my apps set to auto update and I don't even have to think about it. It's basically only the interface that's messed up, anyway.

Better read again my friend. I never said to upgrade to iOS 8. In fact I said earlier that I will never upgrade my iPad 2 to iOS 8 due to performance issues.

What I said is that the latest crop of App Store updates are, for the most part, iOS 8 compatibility fixes. As iOS 7 users, we don't want or need them. And in most cases we won't benefit from them. So this issue is really a non-issue. Apple will get around to it...or not. My iPad running iOS 7 doesn't need or care about iOS 8 updates.

There is a work around currently, jsut serach for the app in the app store and click update via the listing. This needs to be fixed ASAP though.

First of all, sorry if I was rude. It wasn't my intention.

Second, I read your post and of course it's clear that you don't say that upgrading is the solution. The problem here is that you are saying that you are not worried because this updates are not for you. What will happen in the near future if the updates are also for iOS7 users?

Workarounds are not solutions. And they should solve this problem. THEY are saying tha the solutions is to upgrade to iOS8. I want another solution.

Wanted to suggest .. Go to Settings - ITunes & App Store - Automatic Downloads - Updates .... I had 23 updates and all went through without any hiccup. Hope this helps
