I'm posting to keep this conversation going, with hopes of Apple picking up on this issue.

I have a clean, AT&T locked iPhone 5, running whatever the last iOS 7 was, and I'm having this exact same issue. I am up to 10 apps that need to be updated, the "Update All" button is grayed out and when I try to update the apps individually, I only succeed in opening the app instead.

FYI - for all those posting work-arounds for this issue, while your help IS appreciated, it is nevertheless besides the point. We shell out extra dough for Apple products and, personally, I expect them to work! If I wanted to bothered with a bunch of work-arounds, there are plenty of smartphones on the market that would save me a lot money. I want to hit the "Update All" button, put my iPhone down and finish what I was doing!

^I agree

I'm glad there is a workaround for now but its not ideal and i shouldnt have to be doing this on my expensive iphone

Whats also wound me up a treat is the lack of replies from Apple. I saw on one thread a 'helper' posted a ridiculous link on how to use the app store for updates. In other words they didnt help solve it at all.

I've opened 3 cases, 2 so far are 'have you tried updating to ios8 first ?'. I've had a call with someone which was also useless (And i let Apple know via the feedback form after i had the call).

If ANYONE from Apple just said we know its a problem, we're looking into it i'll be happy. But instead they dont seem to realise theres a bug and come out time and time with 'updated to ios8 first'.

Its embarassing

Hi,

I agree with "RZHTZ5" and "Paul Johns". We all are on same page.

Apple saying "update to ios 8" makes no sense at all. I have iPhone 4 and I can't upgrade to ios 8; but still there are people like me frustrated thinking we cant upgrade apps from app store. That's the only reason I provided work around but I feel this issue should be acknowledged by Apple and should fix the issue ASAP rather than saying "update to ios 8". It's been more than three days and the issue still remains open.

Right just having another call. Great a 10 minute wait !!

I'm going to tell the advisor at the start i've got an iphone 4s, not jailbroken. ios 7.04. I DO not want to upgrade to ios8 (runs slow on an iphone, got 500+ apps and i know some wont work as theyre not updated and probably wont ever).

Lets see how it goes.

I've got one app which needs updating (Audiobooks). I press update and it'll open the app, press the name and then update and it'll update. I'll see what they say about this !....

Right been speaking to an advisor for about 10 minutes. Shes been good to be honest, understood the issue, understood why i dont want to go to IOS8. BUT she said she had an ipod touch on ios7 and she can see 'update all' isnt greyed out and it works for her (?!??!). So that caught me off guard. I'll ask her to update an app actually !

Shes now talking to a techy to see if theres anything else she can suggest but shes hinting at 'use the latest version of the software to be on the safe side - eg ios8). Been about 10 mins holding but hopefully it'll be decent news.

Well just finished the 30 minute phone call !

To be fair she did well, spoke to her tech team for a fair while who (surprise surprise) asked me to delete apps and re-install them (that doesnt work does it with the update) or basically upgrade to ios8 !

(Just got an update to Monument Valley, have to press the name then update and it works)

I asked her to update an app on her ipod which had ios7 and 'update all' was active, asked her to try just one and she said it asks for her password (doesnt open it). So yeah that didnt help my issue !

Perhaps it is JUST iphones under ios 7 ?

But i cant see any of us having luck emailing/calling Apple, seem to be oblivious to it

Here is what I discovered. For me, all of the apps in question are already updated. Everyone check your apps for this. I looked up the app's version number in the description in the App Store and then in the About or Settings of the app and compared the two. All of the apps that have the Update button are actually already updated on my phone. That would explain why the Update All button is greyed out. So the real problem is that for some reason, the App Store app is not recognizing this and still thinks these apps need to be updated. That would also explain why when tapping on Update that it opens the app instead because the button should really say "Open."

It seems that this bug manifests itself differently. For some, the posted work around works, for others, like me, it doesn't work. And it is happening on some devices and not on others, like for me it is this way on my phone but not on my iPad Mini. If I'm reading the comments correctly, it seems that the only universal factor is that we are all on iOS 7, but that's just a guess.

Hi everybody.

I think we are a lot of users with that issue. As far as I know (and read) , only affects iOS 7.0.X, so any device in iOS 7.1.2 should be OK and don't have this issue. I have checked in my country with other Iphone users (Jailbroken and not Jailbroken)

So please, keep in mind this if you talk to any person from Apple Support. In my country, the support is only by e-mail.

Regards.

Hey, everyone! I seemed to have gotten my problem with this resolved on my ipad3 7.0.4.... I turned off auto updates, and then turned the back on. I believe I had killed app store before going back and re-enabling. And it worked... all updates began to download. I still seem to have ebay app stuck at 'waiting...', which I think started my problem, but the others have updated.... baby steps I suppose 🙂
