Interesting development overnight. As of early Friday morning, what I am seeing on my iPad 2 running iOS 7.0.6 has changed. The Update All button is no longer grayed out and the Update buttons on the right (that merely launched the app and didn't update anything) have been replaced with the iCloud Download icons.

I tried the Download icon hoping this would be our Update fix, but they don't seem to do anything. You do get an animation of sorts, but no update downloads.

So perhaps Apple is working on this as we speak?

So weird- today it's back to the Update buttons that don't Update.

Same for me. As resetting is not an option for rme, i found one thing that sorta helps... I make sure the store isn't running, then I launch it, then tap Updates, and then frantically tap where Update All will be. It works maybe one out of 5 times I try, and then that works until the iPad thinks it is running out of storage space and the cycle begins again...

I have the greyed out "Update All" issue.

I have an Apple iPad 4th Generation ‑ Wi‑Fi ‑ 32 GB ‑ Black

Running 7.0.2

Just to vent, this is an extremely frustrating problem. As someone wrote previously, we pay a premium for Apple products and expect superior design, functionality and quality. The fact that Apple has not addressed this issue erodes brand loyalty.

I tried this... it sounded similar to free U2 album download issue, oddly enough.

Well, I can report that "Update All" is no longer greyed out... it's gone!

Even after a hard-restart.

Going to try to update via iTunes over a cable.

Wake up, Apple... your user base needs your attention.

I can get round this by updating the apps but its still frustrating that Apple dont seem to acknowledge there is a problem and seem like they want to 'force' you to go to 8.1

Another issue i've found is i have a MAME app (Gridlee) on my non-jailbreaked ipad, it was an app which got past the censors for a few days. Anyway worked a dream with my iCade, but now 'surprise surprise' on iOS 8 theres a stutter as theres a problem with the bluetooth. 'Amazing' the other apps work fine with the iCade but this single one Gridlee has major problems making it unplayable. Boy do Apple like to stop people having fun !!

I'm in the process of selling my ipad 3 and going back to an ipad 2 my friends selling as i can go back to ios7.

The lack of responses from Apple regarding this (Email/discussion forum/telephone) is pathetic, all i got on the phone was roughly 'you should try updating first' so my poor iphone 4s will run sluggishly. Tempted day by day to go to Android as Apple have really let me down regarding this Update issue (and the bluetooth iCade one)

This will not be the answer for all but I wanted to pass on my experience. I was having 2 issues, 1. the apps not updating and 2. several apps not working including Apple's own apps Maps and Find my iPhone as well as others such as Weatherbug. I came across another thread about the update issue and for me the Wall Street Journal app was the culprit. I deleted the app and was able to get my apps to update. I still had some apps not working so I had use the Reset All Settings from the /Settings/General/Reset on the phone. Voila! Phone (128Gb 6+) back to normal. Sans WSJ app. 😟

I had the same problem i just went into settings->itunes & App store and changed automatic downloads on for apps and updates, restarted the phone and after a few mins it started updating its self.

Yes, that works, but be very mindful of what you are allowing with Auto Updates. Some of my biggest tech disasters have been App Store "updates" that were bug-ridden or worse. I recall the Netflix 3.0 update that locked out all users for weeks, or the recent Shazam 8.0 update that deleted all one's Geolocation info from your music tags. Lots of "updates" merely add additional advertising. And some of my apps are work-critical and there is no way I'd let them update until I'd had a chance to check reviews and reports.

Just saying lest anyone turn on Auto Updates and get a bad surprise.

I know what you mean. I did switch to Android in January but that only lasted a few weeks ! I just missed so many great apps i had for my iphone, theres so much rubbish out there on Android in the end i went back to iOS

BUT this issue has put a huge negative image over Apple in my view. They dont seem to care, ringing up customer support has been useless as they just basically say upgrade to ios8.

I upgraded to ios8 on my ipad and wish i hadnt as now theres an issue with bluetooth between my ipad/icade so thats a waste of money

My iphone 4s i want to keep it how it is, at least i can update apps but its still a pain and like you say it STILL hasnt been fixed. A joke, very disappointed by Apples response (or lack of) in this

I had this very same issue. Check how much space you have left on your device and how big the particular update is. It may be that your device simply doesn't have enough space to download any new content/updates. This was the issue for me. Once I deleted a few apps/cleared out my phone a bit, I was able to update the app and the App Store stopped opening the app when I hit "update". This is also why your apps may not longer be automatically updating. Go to settings, then general, then usage to see how much space you have on your device. The size of the update is listed in the App Store under your updates. Hope this helped!
