Cannot update Apps, App opens instead

It worked for me by putting the date after today, it says all my apps are up to date. Before doing that I had logged out and in and restarting the ipad with the power and home button. Thanks for the solution

Had the same issue also. Running the newest 7. I set it to automatically update which appears to be working. I had nothing stuck in the queue, but didn't want to update everything due to potential space issues. And of course the app that won't run without an update is at the bottom of the list.

Wanted to suggest .. Go to Settings - ITunes & App Store - Automatic Downloads - Updates .... I had 23 updates and all went through without any hiccup. Hoot this helps

(I have this same problem with my iPad mini 2 on iOS 7.0.3. Tried to close out the app and restart the iPad but it did not work.)

didnt work for me. I only have 2 apps in my 'purchased' folder both of which I downloaded after this problem started in order to see what would happen. all my other apps don't appear in the purchased screen.

also auto download apps doesn't work for me either. When I turn it to manual the number 21 appears over my AppStore icon, when I change it back to auto the number disappears but nothing gets updated.

Contacting Apple for support for this issue is useless. Their standard answer is to upgrade to the latest OS. Clearly it should be user's choice, especially since 7.xx is still supported. Regardless, there is no resolution other than manually update each app.

Yep, they want to force the new OS revision on everyone and make it as inconvenient as possible to those who don't conform. I'm just going to keep doing this manually in spite. No way am I going to do the upgrade and slow my device down as well as potentially break compatibility with my Pioneer car audio equipment.

ipad 2 on 7.0.6 and I've tried everything I could to try and fix it including asking a gypsy to remove the curse on the iPad. All to no avail.

Begrudgingly upgrading the iPad to 8.* at the moment which I really didn't want to do but I've exhausted all options.

Sweet! Glad I stumbled across this thread. Updating through the purchased section works on my iPhone 5 7.0.6 JB (albeit very annoying). Searching for the app also works although it still says "Open" instead of "Update" so I prefer the purchased method better.

BTW sorry Star Traveler but your advice was a bit annoying. Seems like you just want to get your post count up. Most people know that restoring and updating will fix it but some would rather stay on the version they are on and find a workaround, which was eventually found that works for half the people.

I've never seen a post count. Where do you find that at?

IOS 8 updaters are reporting the same app updating issues.

It's a bit of a hassle if you want to update a lot of apps, but it's better than nothing. And good to know that I'm not the only one experiencing this issue. 😝 iPad 2 running iOS 7.0.4 here.

This worked for 8 of 9 apps that needed updating. For some reason I couldn't find mapQuest in the store search. Will try to update this by logging in to iTunes on the computer and syncing the iPad.
