Update app button opening app instead of updating

Using a 5S on 7.0.4. I have multiple app updates available in the store but the "Update All" button in greyed out and when I click on any of the individual app "Update" buttons, instead of updating the app, the "Update" button launches that app instead. Never had this problem before and it just started in the last day or so. Tried closing all programs, rebooting and none of them are fixing the problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Then update your iOS. If an app requires a higher iOS, then you have to update your iOS. The version of iOS required for an app to run is set by the developer, not by Apple.

What app are you talking about that 'wont run on iOS 8'? If it runs on an earlier iOS, then it runs on a current iOS. Every app in the App Store says: Compatibility: Requires iOS X.X or later.

Come on guys - It's really not that hard to understand:

I have 3 iOS devices, all of them are on various versionsof iOS7 and all of them started to have this stupid problem after Apple released iOS 8.

There are over 90 apps that won't update and those apps have not all been ported to iOS8 so please stop blaming the developers. It is crystal clear that when a button says "Update" and it launches the app instead, this is a problem of the OS! The funny thing is - I did not update my OS so why would it suddenly have a bug? The answer to this is: Apple is deliberately blocking update requests from older iOS versions in order to force people to update the OS. And why? Because they run way to slow on older devices so people have to buy new phones and tablets. That's the only logic explanation for all those "bugs". If this happens one more time I will switch to Samsung.

Total rubbish

I've got 500 apps on my phone. I managed to update them by clicking the name of the app then press Update*. It's a bug with iOS 7. I've spoken to app developers about their latest apps and none are ios8 only. There's lots of reports about this. So yes it's not hard to understand but perhaps you are having issues with so many apps you haven't updated ! You seriously think it's because of ios8 improvements and not an Apple issue? Come on

Hi, I also HAD this problem and was able to solve it without any new OS8 update or using iTunes, just the phone running the software on it.

1. Open the App Store on your iPhone

2. Click on the Updates icon at the bottom of the screen and pay attention to which apps need to be updated, do not click on any

3. swipe to the right to see "Purchased" apps and find any those that need to be updated in the list that are under the tab "All"

4. Here, you can click on the "Open" button to update the App
5. Or you can do a search through the App Store for the app needed to updated and when you find them, click "Open"

I have found that this worked very well for updating.
It seems that Apple is deliberately forcing an upgrade to OS 8 on all devices and also has changed the App Store app on the phone as a stage for that.
Most likely they will remove the app store from being an update portal and only have an update app that will do the OS as well.ee

Hope these tips helped. Let me know :-)

I've had this problem on my old iphone 4s running 7.0.6. I had a strong suspicion that apple was trying to get everyone to update to the latest OS - having seen a similar scenario with Apple before...

I researched this problem several months ago and didn't find a solution. Today, within minutes of skimming posts I stumbled on the solution myself.

Yes, deleting and reinstalling worked, but way to time consuming. The solution nelsonneville posted on Jan 17 worked for me as well.

The way I got it to work was: In app store/update, tap the app twice then update. The first time you tap it, you get the details on the update. The second time it brings up a new windows that has the three columns: Details, Reviews, Related. From this screen the Update button did what it was supposed to.

I don't know if this problem with appear again with the future updates, but at least I can get it to finally update! Hope this helps someone.

Exact same problem as of this morning as the other two iphone 6 users.

Looks like a ply to force us to install ios 8.2, which i am yet to do. (edit: maybe not, one of the above users says already on 8.2)

A number of the apps such as flixster have had updates available well before today, which i could have upgraded yesterday, but due to other users reporting bugs i have chose to not update them. But even apps I now want to update, I am unable too, and just have the open button.

I have the same problem starting today, iPhone 6 iOS 8.2. When I go the "Updates" tab for the first time "Update All" is enabled for a very short time and then disables and all the "Update" buttons change to "Open".

Workaround:

  • Force-close the App Store app
  • Open the App Store app
  • The app starts at the tab "Featured"
  • Now comes the tricky part: press the "Updates" tab and immediately the "Update All" button. Apps should now be updating.

Hi Guys,

If the above didn't work for you....

I had this issue today as well. I only update my apps every week or so, and I've got a lot so I had over 50 pending updates. I've got iPhone 6+ running the latest iOS 8.2 so I don't think it is a ploy to get you to update.

Anyway, I don't know if this is related but earlier today I was watching vimeo on my phone and it suddenly stopped buffering. I noticed my wifi icon had gone as if I were no longer connected to wifi, and my 3G wasn't there either yet I did have phone signal. I was just in bed at home, not moving around and I normally get wifi and 3G all the time. Anyway I switched on wifi again and then thought nothing of it. I just wanted to mention that if it helps anyone else find their solution since people have been mentioning networking problems being related previously here.

Anyway. My fix.

  1. Do a hard reboot, (holding power and home button).
  2. Then go straight to the app store and click on updates.
  3. You have to be very quick, I noticed the updates and update all are active for about a second and then go back to greyed out and saying just open... But if you preempt that, have your finger over the update all tab and click it as soon as it appears mine asked for my password and then updated them all.
  4. One other thing I did I don't know if is a necessary step is turned wifi off before I did the reboot, so I clicked update all with only 3G internet, then after entering my password I turned wifi again.

I don't know if this only works as soon as the iPhone boots back up because it's still booting up, and if having 3G slightly slows the connection down too, all giving you a bit more time you need before it talks to the server and goes back into this loop bug? Maybe, maybe not, but hopefully this helps someone else out.
